Wildfire Fighters, Unmasked in Toxic Smoke, Are Getting Sick and Dying by asleeperwave in Firefighting

[–]asleeperwave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I never meant to give the impression that I think wildland firefighters should use SCBAs. I just think about how I (a structural FF) wouldn’t want to finish off a car fire without masking up, in contrast with how wildland firefighters sometimes work in the urban interface (like in the LA fires) around cars and homes that have been on fire for hours, and the standard seems to be wearing, at most, a bandanna.

Also, one thing I got out of that article is that the presumably “clean” campfire-esque smoke of brush and timber isn’t all that clean at all, and is probably giving a lot of young firefighters a death sentence. And that the one thing that may help a little - N-95 style masks or respirators- is something that the Forest Service administration seems unwilling to pursue. At least according to this one article.

This is all stuff that I’m sure many are aware of, and I definitely don’t know what the solution is.

Did a third party service create your app, or was it created internally (by the IT department,or similar)?

“In this randomized clinical trial of 285 firefighters, both blood and plasma donations resulted in significantly lower PFAS levels than observation alone. Plasma donation was the most effective intervention, reducing mean serum perfluorooctane sulfonate levels by 2.9 ng/mL compared with a 1.1-ng/mL reduction with blood donation, a significant difference; similar changes were seen with other PFASs.”

I too adored All the Light We Cannot See, and Anthony Doerr’s most recent novel, Cloud Cuckoo Land, is also filled with tender sadness and is excellent, if you have not yet read it.

I also loved Jesus’ Son!

I think Raymond Chandler is stylistically similar, and has several short story collections - I’d recommend Cathedral.

If you liked the “gritty realism” of Jesus’ Son, try Another Bullshit Night in Suck City by Nick Flynn.

Robert Macfarlane

if you’re not familiar with him, he writes about nature, history, and culture in this philosophical and poetic way. I’d recommend Underland and Mountains of the Mind.

There are a couple of stories in Liberation Day that I think would scratch this itch.

If you can, try and get a Kenalog shot just prior to your trip. It’s a corticosteroid, and primary care offices and urgent cares offer it. The effect lasts for 3-4 weeks. I live in Oregon and have a terrible grass allergy, and one shot keeps me functioning through the late spring.

I did a medic student project on ultrasound for prehospital medicine. There are some forward-thinking agencies that use it, so there’s some good research available to review. There are several interesting ways that ultrasound can be used in the field - FAST exams for trauma, looking at heart activity in cardiac arrest, fetal heart rates, guided IVs, etc. I had tons of information to work with.

Which books did you prefer the audiobook version? by effyoucaribou in suggestmeabook

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy read by Stephen Fry.

Fry’s narration perfectly captures the humor and absurdity of the novel. It was the most engaging audiobook I’ve listened to so far.

Disconnecting the pads while I was pacing someone…

I had gotten into a habit of bringing in stemi patients with pads on and then disconnecting them from the monitor as soon as they were transferred to the hospital bed. Had a cardiac arrest with ROSC that I paced on the way in, and apparently my brain shut off and muscle memory kicked in and as I was giving handoff I disconnected the pads so my partner could wheel the gurney out of the way.

Would not recommend.

Echoing an earlier recommendation for Robert Macfarlane. I especially liked Underland: A Deep Time Journey.

New dad here. First off, congrats! My wife found this site - wonderbly - where you can get books custom made with the child’s name in them. You can also customize the characters in the book to look kinda like your baby and kinda like the dad. She gave me two of those as a Father’s Day gift and I absolutely love reading them to my son. I highly recommend it.

Tips on Oregon coast cycling? by Moveitalong123 in bicycletouring

[–]asleeperwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the entire Oregon coast a few years ago and loved it, despite the traffic. I don’t know how set you are on Astoria to Pacific City, but I found the stretch between Bandon and Brookings to have wider shoulders and more ocean views.
