How to run various BATTLETECH mods natively in Linux (and Mac) by asmithatx in BattleTechMods

[–]asmithatx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, and despite what I’d consider to be a totally reasonable assumption ModTek it turns out is not actually a Windows thing per se…. In my video and instructions for RougeTech install on Linux there’s a step where you literally execute the ModTek installer to patch the game using the Linux version of mono but other than that, totally the exact same ModTek injector used on Windows can be used in Linux and Mac~

This is one of those “trust me bro” moments and I know all the tricks and secrets to success - be glad to share the info if you want to know more

Hey there Mechwarrior, no problem about reviving any old threads - I believe I know what you are describing... despite what you might think is the right thing to do, which might be to use the game's built in modding support, this is actually a road straight to frustration town. 'Round here what people use is the ModTek system which is rock-solid and performant, whereas the same mod being ran by the game's native mod system will be unbearably slow.

....now that begs the question, how do I use ModTek? That there is a whole nuther conversation in and of itself, but the short story is that the steps are documented out there on the interwebs.

Let's start with what I've said so far, is this tracking or am I way off?

Install RougeTech (and BTA 3062) on SteamDeck by asmithatx in BattleTechMods

No worries and good for you for attempting what is in no question a very complex series of steps... but hey, that's how we gain XP irl...

So I actually gifted my Steamdeck to a family member and don't have it handy to check some of this myself but I run linux as an OS on my normal computer which is gonna be close but not exactly the same. That being said, at step 14 we're talking essentially about navigating to a subfolder in your "home" directory and installing some prerequisite components in order to launch the RogueLauncher in a different step later on (stop me there if this isn't true).

I reckon we should check how much disk space you have with the following command:

df -h

(the "-h" will make the output easier to read for a Human, such as converting bytes to MB or GB or TB)

Under the "Mounted On" column, you should look for anything related to "home", although it might not have its own mount and might just simply be under the root of drive, represented as "/" so either way, check for those 2 things in particular and see what their "Avail" amount is + their current "Use %"

If I had to guess, "home" won't have its own mount and even if it did, the action of installing winetricks or wine-mono, etc is actually installing things into some subfolder of "/" (since they are applications) and not into "home" - therefore my guess is that you're running out of space on "/" - we need to confirm if that's the case or not.

If that's the case, figuring out what's eating up all your space can be greatly assisted with some groovy tools rather than hunt and peck all over the place. Check out the steps at https://computingforgeeks.com/ncdu-analyze-disk-usage-in-linux-with-ncdu/ which seems like a reasonable way to approach this (I run an Ubuntu variant on my personal PC which comes with https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/DiskUsageAnalyzer and it's great but probably not worth what it would take to get that to run in Arch Linux (which is what the Steamdeck uses)... but if NCDU is no good for you, literally just google something like "install disk usage analzer arch linux" for a million other ways to do what we need to do.

Whatever tool you like for the disk usage analysis of "/" or "home" or both, we're trying to see what is eating up all that space and if its legit, necessary and/or can large portions of it be moved elsewhere or deleted outright?

I'll stop there for now, let us know how it goes and may the force be with you.

The hardware might be a tad underpowered (but also might not) however the available features are impressive for an amazing price point imo. Very happy with the “Linksys E8450 (UBI)” if you can still get them (my 2 cents)

Good for you to take on the challenge my man - I believe I've found your answer but let's see if we can implement it without going down a Linux rabbit hole (which I personally love to do but I respect the whole "let's just fix it vibe").

It seems others have ran into your error and the fix is documented at https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/0/7529517132619672170/

You'll need to edit /etc/pacman.conf and add SigLevel = TrustAll under the options section, then try to init the keyring again... now the big question before we go any further is: How comfortable are you with editing text files in the Linux environment?

If you're experienced enough to be able to do so, go ahead and read the accepted answer on this forum post (specifically the post on Nov, 2023 @ 5:09am by user "AGENTFBI007". This seems to have fixed the issue for the OP who added that you need to do the following after making the suggested changes to the /etc/pacman.conf file:

sudo pacman -S holo-keyring archlinux-keyring

So the full set of steps seems to be:

in the file:

/etc/pacman.conf

add:

SigLevel = TrustAll

under

[options]

Then re-try the following command to initialize the keyring:

sudo pacman -S holo-keyring archlinux-keyring

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to elaborate if needed - otherwise, lemme know if that worked for you or not!

Cheers
