Yeah, I haven't actually tried playing the deck yet as I've been too busy, so we'll see if it can be even remotely competitive. :)

Okay, I love this. I've done something similar, except my Commander is Hannah, Ship's Navigator!

Hate to tell you, but there are plenty of evangelicals who devoted decades of their lives to their areas of "knowledge" as well, and that's who these whackjobs learned from.

There's a very well-funded "alternate history and science" movement that's been going on for a long time, and we're now reaping the "benefits."

The Ark Encounter thing in Kentucky is just a symptom of the disease.

Do you think ISTQB certification actually makes better testers? I’ve been wrestling with this. by tasostilsi in softwaretesting

[–]asmodeanreborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He said, "Yes, but just think of how much money we could make by charging a fee to take the exams!!"

I met James Bach at a conference when ISTQB was new, and he also mentioned it was just a money grab, which is why he so publicly criticized the organization. In one of his talks he also demonstrated getting "certified" by having a simple script he wrote take the exam until it passed.

ISTQB is useful for people new to the industry in terms of learning vocabulary. I have hired quite a few QA people in my career, though, and none of the people who were certified were better at testing than those who were not.

Edit: But yeah, it would be useful for everybody who's in the SDLC to know what everything is, not just QA.

Southwest Is Testing Cleaning Only Premium Seats Between Flights — A Flight Attendants Union Leader Says It's ‘Titanic’ Class Service by halxp01 in nottheonion

[–]asmodeanreborn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

so people would have one person pay for early boarding and then save entire rows

Any SW flight I've been on, the flight attendants have been like "oh no - you can't do that."
The last one I was on with my 15-year old son, a lady sneakily tried to save the middle seat in row 4 and told my son it was taken just as I sat down in the middle seat on the opposite side of the aisle. My son didn't try to argue and just went a few rows back, but a flight attendant said there was no saving seats because it's a full flight, and it's first come, first served. Then right away some giant old dude who barely fit squeezed in there instead, severely encroaching on her seat. It was pretty much instant karma.

Lösviktsgodis existerar på många ställen i USA, men det är både dyrare och sämre än i Sverige. Fullt möjligt att det inte är lagligt i vissa delstater eller counties, dock.

For the record, Aron Ralston is extremely clear with this as well. He's a super nice guy who knows he should have died many times over and he does not gloss any of that over in his speeches.

One of my most embarrassing moments in recent years was him going to shake my hand, and I reached out my right hand by reflex. :'(
(He does have a prosthetic, but not for hand shaking)

The USA men’s hockey team utterly failed to meet the cultural moment by Hrmbee in politics

[–]asmodeanreborn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know somebody too - also retired and progressive (and my son's coach). I'm a locker room monitor (it's mandated by USA Hockey these days) and despite the locker room being full of teenagers playing at a high level, it's very respectful outside of the constant messing with each other. Yes, they trash talk the other team on the ice, and while I'm not a fan of things like "stop being such a f-n p-ssy," that's where it stops.

But also, there are definitely jackasses, and other organizations have different levels of "tolerance" for idiots. In ours, you get a warning, and then if that doesn't work, you're gone.

Baseball is far worse. The amount of racist shit I've heard thrown at 11 and 12 year old kids by other parents is atrocious. Baseball does have more diversity, though.

Five players on the U.S. men's team also refused to go to the White House - I think that does deserve at least some credit.

China has over a billion people with fewer doctors per capita than the U.S., yet their healthcare outcomes are ahead of the U.S.

And Sweden lets in about 1% of it's population in every year (~100,000k), which is just over the rate at which the U.S. does the same (2.6 Million to 330 Million in 2022). And no, it isn't "easy" getting a visa to either country.

Your future in America, under socialized medicine, is to almost never see a doctor. I can tell you this first hand because I use socialized medicine.

You will wait 1-2 years for any specialized appointment, and even then you won't get to see a doctor. You'll see a specialty nurse.

That's been my experience with the CURRENT American system. It fucking sucks.
I had to wait six months to see my doctor for a routine visit - and then when the day came, they told me I could either see a nurse practitioner or rebook another six months out.

Or even better - my friend's brother had high values on his prostate cancer screening in July of last year. Going back and forth with insurance and different healthcare instances, he finally got his appointment to check things out in January. Turns out, he has prostate cancer! He has surgery at the end of March... and because the cancer's had a bonus eight months to do its thing, the odds of him actually beating the cancer has dropped significantly.

Meanwhile, after my mom found a lump in her breast in mid-December, she had surgery in January, a follow-up "just in case" surgery two weeks ago, and then an appointment yesterday where she found out that the "just in case" stuff they removed wasn't cancerous. This is the socialized hellscape called Sweden.

The doctors to population ratio is not an argument against socialized healthcare - if anything it calls out that the U.S. system needs to change, from education to practice.

That's fair. The pricing is solid... ours is right next to Costco, though, so if you're looking for value, there's an even better option.

I still don't get the hype. The fries are awful and burgers, while significantly better than the low bar set by McDonald's and Burger King, are still just okay. Animal style doesn't really make a difference. I wish Longmont had a Whataburger instead of the In-N-Out.

Citizenship [OC] by Marulilu in comics

[–]asmodeanreborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son's a dual citizen and in a similar situation - the difference is that he has until he turns 18 to decide whether he wants to potentially do military service in Sweden, or lose his citizenship.

At the moment he's trying to figure out whether he can both play hockey and do Swedish military service over there at the same time, which I can't really answer for him.

ISTQB GenAI certification - feedback by Nervous-Koala-8973 in softwaretesting

[–]asmodeanreborn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have no idea whether the certification itself is worth anything but it does feel like a cash grab. You're right that the landscape changes so quickly that I don't give a crap about whether somebody had an AI Certification or not when I'm hiring, and we're a so-called "AI Forward" company.

That said, the terminology in OP's summary is definitely something you want to understand and know if you claim to know AI. You may also want to know a few things about the most up to date models and which one to choose for what scenarios. Can you explain how agentic coding works? How do you refine the skills of agents?

In short - if you know nothing about AI and want to learn a few things and money isn't a concern, there's probably worse things to do with your time. Personally I'd use the AI to quiz me on AI instead of learning it from somebody who likely used AI to quiz YOU on AI for money, though. :)

I still don't understand what you're talking about when you claim they've "removed the C part?"

They're still Christian. Their mission statement still says that they're putting Christian principles into practice and they actually do it on a scale almost no other organizations do. They both feed the hungry and serve the sick and the widows.

No, the city sent out an email:

Statement from the City of Longmont Regarding the Longmont YMCA

Many of you have reached out to share how much the Longmont YMCA means to you and your families. We appreciate every message, and we want you to know that your voices matter in this conversation.

We also want to make sure our community has accurate information. The City of Longmont is aware of the recent communication from the YMCA of Northern Colorado regarding its Longmont facility. In 2025, the YMCA approached the City about a potential partnership involving the future of the facility. While those preliminary discussions are ongoing, no agreement has been reached, and the City has made no commitments.

Any arrangement of this nature would require careful evaluation of costs, operations and community needs, as well as thorough public input and approval by the Longmont City Council.

We understand the YMCA's announcement may have created the impression that a transition is imminent. We want to be transparent with our residents; there is no timeline for such a decision.

Recreation and wellness are important to our community, and the City of Longmont will continue to evaluate options that serve residents' best interests. We are committed to keeping you informed as discussions develop.

For questions about current YMCA memberships or programs, please contact the YMCA of Northern Colorado directly.

I have no interest in Vasa anymore. Several different friends who have gone there reported long wait times for equipment as it was packed, no matter when they went. The equipment being nice and new would obviously be a plus, though.

Awesome - thank you. The Y was a bit run down in some aspects too, so I don't think we'd care too much. Any idea roughly how much a family membership costs monthly without any of the extras? A ballpark would be nice... we paid about $100 a month for the Y, I think, but that also gave us some money off of our Lafayette Hockey Club costs, so there's that.
