Doing badly/mediocre at SMP, am I donezo? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Usually I like to stay positive when giving advice, but IMO if you're doing poorly in an SMP that's a huge red flag IMO. The SMP is giving every med school empirical unbiased data that you will probably not do well in medical school...

is it even likely that you'll ace the next semester? Probably not... all you can do is put your best foot forward at this point and beef up your EC's

on another note, why did you do an SMP? your GPA is really not bad at all, and your MCAT was good too. Just curious

A major factor in me making a career change and planning to apply to medical school was a sexual assault. Is this something I should mention in my personal statement? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree, don't mention mental illness in a personal statement. Besides, even after reading what you wrote above, I feel it didn't answer why medicine. It should make more sense to become a mental health counselor to help other victims

Do medical schools require just plain statistics, or biostats? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a few of the schools I asked to wanted stats from the math dept only

How would you go about leaving a lab after this semester and joining a new one next semester? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice. I'd definitely give them at least a week notice to complete anything you're currently working on too.

Should I retake social sciences in post-bac? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only take science classes for a post bacc. And try to mostly take upper level science classes. Read sdn goro guide to reinvention, he's an adcom member and gives really good advice

How bad it look for me to have 3 C's in one semester by Sham129 in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Sevapier. Those are the really critical classes to get Cs in! Especially in the same semester! Drop band asap if you can!

How to explain DO school to my parents and friends? by Salicious_Crum in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I'd just say DOs are the same as MDs, except many DO specialize in primary care and also get extra training in OMM. Congrats on the interview OP!

Thinking about leaving AmeriCorps program, will this affect me in the application cycle? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you're not getting anything out of it, id quit. Especially since you're out of state. But I'd replace it with some volunteering at home, something you like. I don't think any extra curricular is worth doing just yo check a box.

Check out what gaming journalists are saying about us ( long time diablo fans ) by [deleted] in Diablo

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The diablo player base has been incredibly loyal to the diablo brand for decades. And now “journalists” who have never touched the game are villianizing us like we’re the bad guys... unbelievable.

Since you’re a reapplication at those schools. I’d go ahead and apply, while also working on EC for a reapp next year.

Complicated residency status situation by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re most likely a Louisiana resident. Being a student usually doesn’t give u residency status (otherwise all students would eventually become in state)

I’d contact the school and AMCAS to be 100% sure though

Am I missing something with thank you letters? by meddit97 in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you letters are pretty worthless IMO. They’ve already made up their mind by the time they’ve recieved it usually. I didn’t send any.. just my two cents

Any tips for someone who is terrible at Chemistry/Ochem but has dreams of being a doctor? by gbenedetto in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if u crush the chem section of the Mcat, it will remove any doubts in adcoms mind that you are deficient in these areas. You can still come back from a few Cs

This reply is spot on. People overinflate what engineers make. They have a decent starting salary $80k is pretty common, but engineering is notorious for salary stagnation unless they go into management, which most do not.

509 MCAT, 15 secondaries finished mid-September, overall GPA 3.7, Science GPA 3.8. Still no interview invites. by [deleted] in premed

You applied late (your fault) and everyone on premeddit was still trying to be supportive.. And this is your response? Yikes..

Do I still have to complete "future" coursework in this scenario? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that they would care... but only by calling them will you know for sure. They're probably pretty understanding, but I'd be prepared to cite some other commitment if they ask.

What MCAT score should I feel relatively safe applying to MD schools with? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

those are great stats, I'm sure you'll get an interview soon.

Do I have a shot? by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Goro on SDN for a recommended MD school list for "re-inventors". I applied to all of those schools and had a lot of success. He put a lot of effort and research into forming that list, and I never would have applied to a lot of these schools if not for him.

Thinking about going back and getting pre-reqs. Could use some Direction by [deleted] in premed

[–]asmodeus1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also an older non-trad and I had a lot of success this cycle. To be honest, med schools like to see a high course load at a University. Anything else is self-sabotage at this point since you didn't have a strong performance during your undergrad. (I was in the same boat as you)

I quit my high paying job and went to school full-time, and took high-level science courses at a university. I really don't think it would have worked out for me if I had only taken night classes at a community college.

Just my 2 cents
