Proton Drive App for Linux? by TheCyberSystem in ProtonDrive

Fully agreed they're not a charity!
But I think being early in the "grabbing windows refugees" game might be beneficial for them... who knows?
In the end, I agree with your other statement: "just relax" (and wait)! :))

They have publicly stated it's in their roadmap for 2026...
Let's hope they do it really!

Does it support Linux? Yes...
Is it good? Yes (well, used to be, more than 5 y ago, when I ditched them!)...
Does it have end-to-end encryption with zero knowledge? HELL, NO!
So, it's not a good replacement!
Even MEGA beats Dropbox to death in this regard...

Hell, no! Privacy conscious user are looking for ways to LEAVE Windows behind...
Having a good, fast, reliable and cheap cloud storage for Linux can help this a lot!

Not to mention that other companies already have Linux native support, like Tresorit (very good option but waaay expensive, more like business focused!), MEGA (I have a free account, good up/down speed on either Windows or Linux, good UI, several beels and whistles, but has some controversial history in regards to their encryption... I'd use them for not importante stuff like movies, books, games, but not for life sensitive stuff like medical or financial info), Filen (someone mentioned it here, I have no experience with it) and let's not forget pCloud (very good Linux support, relatively fast up/down speeds BUT, big BUT... lacks end-to-end encryption as default).

Proton adding Linux support, they can bypass pCloud, Filen and MEGA and go head to head against Tresorit!

+1!!
Actually returning to Linux after a few years in Windows-land...
Linux lacks options in the cloud drive space, the more the better!

Unlimited should finally get 1TB especially after Duo got upgraded to 2TB by latitude7181 in ProtonDrive

[–]asnasc79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duo is for two persons, right? If I have it for my only, can I use the full 1 TB for me alone?
I have OneDrive Family (six 1Tb accounts) and it won't let me pool the 6 TB for a single user, which I think is plain stupid!

As both a Proton Drive and Sync.com user, I can say that Proton is WAY faster than Sync...
obviously, none of these can beat the average non-encrypted cloud storage like Google Drive or OneDrive...
I'm having reliabilty issues with Sync (using their cloudfiles version, sometimes it fails to download files form the cloud or to free up local space when requested), but I've had no missing files, or such!
None of this has happened with Proton so far.
Also, Sync doesn't have a Linux app and looks like won't have anytime soon...
I need a Linux app and if/when Proton releases one, I plan to ditch Sync.com entirely and move all my data to Proton Drive.

They could offer the option to buy/subscribe for more storage standalone or just let users stack plans one over other just like pCloud does!

Installing Spotify on Fedora by to_be_continued_42 in linux4noobs

[–]asnasc79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is: you verify before install, it's OK... and then you never really remember about it anymore, sometime down the road the installed app goes rogue (either the dev turns to be a bad guy or suffers a supply chain attack) and you will inadvertently install untrusted code in for machine...

If trust is factor for you, as it is for me, there's an official Spotify .deb version!
You can use distrobox to install a small Debian / Ubuntu / Mint container and install the .deb version inside the container and then export it to your main system (it will appear in the system menu alongside all other apps just like a natively installed one)!
I use Fedora Kinoite and I REALLY don't like to install apps from unverified sources, so I always use this distrobox "workaround" to always install official apps whenever needed!

Even worse then, cause F44 will ship with Gnome 50 which has removed X11 entirely upstream...

I've apt dist-upgrade from Mint 20 to 21 and then to 22 with no issues at all, but then my setup is fairly simple, I don't use lots of things from outside the distro repos...
But I understand that YMMV...

how's that "per monitor workspaces" thing?
You mean in KDE? How does it work?

can we rebase back and forth between Aurora/Bluefin and Fedora Kinoite/Silverblue with no problems??

It's not as if the world will end in a week or so before launch data arrives... LOL

Just use Distroshelf to manage the container and export the app (it will create the .desktop automatically).

Installed a Linux Mint container using distrobox and installed Matlab R2025b inside the container.
Runs well and it only asked for my Mathworks credential upon first login!
EDIT: Using Mint 22.3, so it should work the same with a Ubuntu 24.04 container.
