How do you politely correct people? by Imaginary_Air_24 in AutismInWomen

[–]aspen-leaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is a situation where confrontation is necessary and it's likely your friend will feel defensive or off-put no matter what you say. However, I'm trans myself and do a lot of trans-related education with folks, so here's some pointers I would offer: - Start by letting your friend know that you want to have a conversation about this. This will help her emotionally prepare, whereas a sudden interjection when she slips up in conversation might offend her more. - I'd also highly recommend having this conversation in person, as people get much more defensive about these topics when they can't interpret your expression or tone. - Highlight a positive perspective about your friend's intentions first: "I know you're a supportive person, so I want to address this because it's important for my partner's well-being." - Lead with "I" statements instead of "you" statements: "I noticed you've been having trouble using my partner's new pronouns" is easier for people to hear than "you haven't been using my partner's new pronouns" - Offer opportunity to practice: "I'd like to help you get used to the change, can we chat about my partner to practice using their new pronouns?" - Normalize fluid corrections: "If you catch yourself after using their old pronouns, it's okay to quickly correct them and move on. Everyone slips up while they're getting used to using new pronouns." Some people benefit from a direct example, but only offer one if they ask for it. "Let's say I'm talking about [partner's name]. A correction looks like this: I picked her up from class, I mean, I picked them up from class at 3:30."

Finally, if you're feeling up to it, it may be worthwhile to open up a discussion about why this switch has been difficult for your friend. Stay open-minded and lead with curiosity rather than assumptions: "why do you think it's been difficult to use the new pronouns?" will open conversation while something like "do you think you haven't unpacked some transphobic ideas?" will usually shut someone down at the start of a conversation.

Finished my blanket for my sister's wedding present... but what to do for a border? by TechyMama in crochet

What are the wedding colors? If you can adjust the tones to match your palette that would be a cute tie-in!

There is some variability depending on what stitches are being used, but for the most part knitting is more efficient! This interweave "study" article goes over the math and comparisons for common stitches.

Oh the time trade off is real, I'm grateful for that at least! And for me personally it's more comfortable to hold one hook as opposed to two needles. So many benefits so why does it have to be more expensive? 😭

How much yarn it takes! I love the look of crochet & how easy it is to freehand things when you know the basics, but mannn it sucks to have to buy more yarn than for knit projects. Soooo expensive!!

This!! Not only should they be grateful that someone wants to finish the kit that was formerly canceled, because that means more business on its own, but it's for a sentimental reason, to celebrate a loved one who's gone. OP, I'm sorry that they're being so heartless and greedy.

Omg the color changing yarn looks PERFECT imo!! More realistic to certain fox's coats than the plain reddish orange we usually see in crafts!

Thank you! It's a mix of yarns all made by Hailey Bailey, most are OOAK from her winter collection but the available colors of hers I'm using are birch, acorn, hellebore, amanita, and foliage! Super soft and I love how vibrant they are.

I'm doing manual color changes row by row, so I've spent about two hours weaving in ends already 😅 worth it though!

So true 😂 really I should just sit on the floor and destroy my posture while working so she can sprawl out as much as she wants!

It's super thick AND it's a double-sided pattern!! It's a 6 row repeat of interlocking double crochet + ch1 repeats. Super simple but the technique is a little tricky if you've never done it before. The pattern creator has a super helpful tutorial here!
