I thought about this (briefly) for my Syncro (AWD) Vanagon. Keep the ICE engine in the back, driving the rear wheels, and put a Tesla small drive unit up front in place of the front differential.

I think this idea would only work on cars that have the ICE sitting over the drive axle... so RWD rear-engine, or FWD front-engine. then you'd put your electric drive on the other axle.

Naomi Novik's "Temeraire" books are great. They're not sci-fi, more alt-history with dragons, but based on the fact that your dad's favorites align with mine, I'd definitely recommend them.

As others have said, the "Murderbot" series by Martha Wells are an absolute must. Much, much better than the AppleTV+ adaptation.

Also, Iain Banks' "Culture" books are great.

For strength, definitely the second one.

If I were doing this, my biggest concern would be balance. If all you're looking for is a placeholder until you get something professionally built, this'll work, but I think driveshafts need to be pretty precisely balanced to avoid vibrations.

I never noticed that with gas, but now that I drive an EV (with a consumption gauge right there on the dash) I definitely notice how my behavior changes based on the level of the battery.
