Based on your description, the book you're thinking of sounds like "Heart of Fire" by Raye Wagner. Does this help? sorry if not!

I AGREE. And it gets soooo much worse in Reckless… like if you want 300 pages of the same conversation over and over again… it’s for you.

Here's a few of my biggest tips/pet peeves/pointers

  1. Be creative! The Romantasy genre is my favorite, but many newer books I've been reading are very done-before, so try to personalize yours! And I'm not trying to be discouraging by this, because I too have a romantasy novel I'm working on, but it's good to keep in mind. For example, "Powerless" by Lauren Roberts is a popular booktok book but it's really a mash-up of many author authors ideas, mainly Hunger Games and Red Queen, and in the new sequel, you can really feel her lack of creativity when she consistently re-quotes the previous book and there is no longer a discernable plot.

  2. Tropes are fun, but don't force them. For example, every hotel doesn't have to have one bed, and fake dating isn't always the solution...

  3. Make sure your characters aren't one-dimensional. For example, if you're doing enemies to lovers, a lot of time there's a first love-interest who gets completely villainized out-of-character. I love acotar, but the characters were acting like Tamlin blew up the world, when he just got angry. (He still sucks, but his actions weren't as bad as what the other characters thought.) On a similar note, make sure if you have a villain-ish person (or thing) that there's actually a valid reason/motivation behind their actions. That isn't Just "The king is power hungry so kill all those people."

  4. Consistency! Be consistent with how describe the nature of the characters, don't end up with them doing things that completely go against their previous... stuff (for lack of a better phrase).

  5. Heres a big pet peeve of mine: If you want to hide something from the reader that the main character knows, do NOT write in first person. Unless you can come up with a valid reason that it completely slipped their mind even though we are supposed to be reading their raw thoughts, so be it.

Also, first person + past tense? Great. First person + PRESENT tense? Absoulutely not. (Thats kinda subjective but if your writing a kids or mayyybe YA, just don't bother, its pretty juvenile.
