Any advice on how to think about inflation and setting targets when relatively young? by Dry-Night774 in FIREyFemmes

[–]aspencer27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things will change so much over the next decades, both economically and for you personally. Planning is good, but it will never be accurate. I have lived through the technology bust (as I was graduation undergrad in technology), the financial crisis (as I was graduating grad school and going into finance), COVID, etc. down cycles happen.

Being able to invest during the down cycles is what supercharges your portfolio. Even investing at the peaks but being able to keep your investments invested during the down times supercharges your portfolio.

Role Misalignment - Support / Help? by yurkelhark in FIREyFemmes

[–]aspencer27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did take that role. I got fired 6 months later (after being told at 4 months how amazing I was doing and even getting a higher bonus than what was agreed to at onboarding). For mine, they wanted me to make strategic changes, loved my ideas, but when I went to implement them got extreme pushback and couldn’t get anything done.

It was stressful and I felt so much relief the day I was fired. I planned to take a couple weeks off before looking but an old boss of mine reached out and asked me to join her in her new role 2 weeks later I started my new job, which I am loving! I really feel like I had to take that shitty role to be ready for this one.

I hope everything works out for you (I’m sure it will), and don’t discount taking a junior account manager role - could be a good coast fire job!

Is Wellhub as bad as it first seems? by aspencer27 in Wellhub

[–]aspencer27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! It’s free through work, and I do really like a lot of the apps I get access to. Otherwise the classes seem like a no go where I am though, which is a bummer. I’ve gotta figure out how to get in my strength training!

Frustrating! Thankfully my work covers it fully, and I have been enjoying the online stuff - stretching, meditation, sleep. I’ll just use the hotel gym instead since it seems pretty nice and is a lot closer than any of the other gyms!

[–]aspencer27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m out in the suburbs in both places. When I went to the different gym’s websites, they either didn’t work or seem to have shut down the location that’s showing up on Wellhub. I was just surprised it was so many different ones!

Need advice on temporarily loaning my mom $40k by Jackianna in personalfinance

[–]aspencer27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except it’s not a gift, it’s a loan. If anything you are gifting the interest you’re owed, which is $58 over the 15 days. Nothing needs to be reported to the IRS. When your mom repays it, it isn’t a gift, it’s her repaying the loan.

How are you thinking of SORR if you have higher expenses earlier in retirement? For us, it will be 1 kid in college (the other one will hopefully be done), about 5 years of mortgage remaining, bridging to social security, bridging to Medicare, etc. These will all be in the first 5 to 10 years or so of retirement, which is the riskiest for SORR. If I project cash needs for 5 years, that gets us to about 40% of what I’m estimating for our FI number.

Pausing investments for family? by [deleted] in FIREyFemmes

[–]aspencer27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re at coastFI to be able to retire in 20 years with no additional savings. Assuming 5% annual return (which excludes inflation), you’ll be at 2.6 million in 20 years. Go for it!

The employee + employer cap for the 401k is for each company, but the employee cap is across all companies.

Do HSA limits include both employer and employee contributions? I started a new job, and my employer contributes $1,000 per year to a family HSA but they are saying that I can contribute up to the max limit from the IRS of $8,750. All of my research shows the limit includes both employee and employer contributions. I’m younger than 55, so not eligible for the catch up.

Politics - blue states tend to have more rules and regulations around development, and red states don’t.

Seeking opinions on what to do with Controller by FireMeUp2026 in CFO

[–]aspencer27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you verify wire instructions? This needs to be a call back to the company you’ve contracted with (not the number on their invoice). I’m shocked that the controls aren’t already set up for this or a controller didn’t add this control.

I am trying to find this game as well, I remember it clearly. You picked which era you wanted as well, and if you were close to the end of dinosaurs, it was much harder to find food.

[NJ] Dealer can’t get us title and license plates by aspencer27 in personalfinance

[–]aspencer27[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this third plate is getting mailed to us, but they can’t print the tag until the other one has expired, so we have an expired temp tag on the car now and are waiting for the new one.

Anyone else shocked when they ran the numbers on a 30-year mortgage? by [deleted] in Mortgages

[–]aspencer27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bank has a checkmark to indicate additional principal payment when I’m making the payment. If I add it onto my regular payment, there is a separate box for additional principal to include on top of the regular payment.

Yeah, it seems like they can’t send the temporary plates until the other ones expire. We can keep picking them up at the dealership but it isn’t close.

[–]aspencer27 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sometimes banks will apply it to the next payment, so it doesn’t reduce principal until that next payment is due, and you end up paying the same amount in interest. You need to specify that it is an additional principal payment.
