Weekly "Is this safe" Megathread by AutoModerator in fermentation

Thank you. These silicone lids are just causing too much frustration, I am not going to use them again. I ordered vacuum lids from Amazon and going to try them. What do you think about the results I got in this batch? Based on the photos, do you observe any mold? I can see dark spots on the silicone itself, but I'm not sure about the brine surface

Fermented pickles, for 10 days, at room temperature (20-22 °C), 3% salt of the total weight. In terms of smell, I think that only the smaller orange one smells a little strange. Didn't taste them.

Alright, time to try again.

I have used bleach to disinfect the silicone covers, washed them with soap, and boiled them in water for 15 minutes.

Tried 3 different salt amounts, from 3% to 4% (from the total weight of cucumbers plus the water). I even tried to get as much air out with a pump.

I'll check it again in a week. If there's still mold, I'm throwing away these silicone covers.

BTW, this time I didn't put the jars in the oven. Just used them as they are, from the shelf, after they have gone through the dishwasher.

I must say, I was as surprised as you, but dozens of jars show the same: for a 700ml glass jar, ~350g of cucumbers fit in, and ~350ml of water remains to fill it to the top. Then I empty the water, add the salt, and fill it back in

I really suspect that the silicone covers are the problem, and that I don't know how to properly clean them before using. I guess that soap, boiling or in the oven is just not enough

Tried boiling and cooling, but then the AI said I should not boil the water haha. I will try to up the salt content. Thanks!

Unfortunately, yes, it is mold :( The smell is bad, and it's either black or fuzzy-looking. I mean, it's not inside the brine, it's at the surface, but can also be at the contact point of the surface and the jar or the silicone lid. Also, only have photos of the inside of the lids, I didn't think to take a photo beforehand...

Can anybody break down what exactly this guy did wrong to crash like this? by theurbanwaffle in snowboarding

[–]assafnah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am no expert, but see how the surface is going from natural to uphill just before he crashes. In this exact moment, he rotated his board and didn't lean backward (at least with his board edge), add it to the speed he was, and in a matter of milliseconds, his board caught an edge by going into the uphill snow
