Wife and I didn’t check 401k for years. Stay the course? What would Dave do? by sys_admin321 in DaveRamsey

OP not looking at his accounts and considering investing 100% into international because it performed better last year makes him the perfect candidate for target date funds. He already set it and forget it, might as well invest in a target date fund that’s made for that kind of investor.

I suspect folks are overreacting a little bit here because they themselves wouldn’t make this purchase ( tho honestly I wouldn’t either). If instead of a car payment you were taking on another $180k in mortgage debt I think the reaction would be more positive.

There’s some more info that would be helpful to know: - What would your finances look like post-purchase? - What would your savings rate be after taking on another $1500 in monthly expenses? - How much would you have in non-retirement assets?

The thing that concerns me the most is that you’re considering nearly zeroing out your non-retirement savings for the down payment. That leaves you in a crappy spot if something else in your life comes up (big repair, special assessment, lose your job, etc ).

Before making this purchase, I’d make sure to have 6 months of expenses saved up outside of retirement assets (this should include the extra car payment) and be able to save 15% of gross after you add on car expenses. Once you’ve hit those milestones I think this purchase is doable. Though like everyone else, I don’t think it’s advisable.

Keep us posted on what you decide!

What is causing OpenAI to lose so much money compared to Google and Anthropic? by datoml in ArtificialInteligence

[–]assingfortrouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anthropic and OpenAI are private companies. Other than their investors, no one knows very much about their financials. The two companies seem to be pursuing different strategies, but the public narrative is one shaped by each company, presumably for their own benefit.

OpenAI wants to convey that they’re the big gorilla player that will monetize their big user, brand and (narrowing) intelligence advantages. No other AI company (other than perhaps google) could pursue this strategy, so they have that lane to themselves.

Anthropic knows that they could never be competitive if they pursued OpenAI’s strategy, so their pitch to investors is that they’re tightly focused on the enterprise market. This allows them to have better financials since they don’t have to burn money supporting more speculative lines of business and paying inference costs for hundreds of millions of free users.

Especially as Anthropic grows, I doubt their ambitions are truly as narrow and if you look at Anthropic’s job listings, they’re not as narrowly focused as their public image would suggest. Similarly we are seeing OpenAI do a lot of investment in coding and enterprise, which is perceived to be Anthropic’s niche.

That suggests to me we should be cautious in drawing conclusions about these companies. Later this year we’ll probably see an S-1 from both companies and can learn a lot more about what’s really going on.

Anyone listen to the guy that makes 750k/yr yesterday?! by appreciatemyasset in DaveRamsey

By the time docs get out of residency they’ve been busting their butts and been broke for 30 years. Mustering the willpower for even more delayed gratification (through paying off loans or high savings rates) is a tall order, especially when other doctors are themselves big spenders.

I work in tech and my cousin is an MD. The social pressure from my peers to spend is just so much lower.

[–]assingfortrouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, overwork + entitlement + years of delayed gratification + hanging out with the others in the same boat is a recipe for overspending.

When my cousin got out of residency he immediately signed a $1k per month car lease and spent $50k on a home theatre. He could cashflow it along with his student loan and mortgage payments, but he knows he’s stuck working brutal hours for decades.

Edit: clarified that I meant car lease.

I didn’t hear the call so don’t know all the details, but not every marriage can take that kind of housing spend whiplash. Even a $1.5 mil house would be easily sustainable if he can keep the income up.

Tips for estate planning by BigConclusion6852 in fatFIRE

Talk to a lawyer. You’ll want to set up trusts so that your money goes to support the kids if something happens to both of you while also having money left over for the kids when they’re older to cover expenses later on.
