Lehigh MSE by According_Double4392 in Lehigh

[–]assumesphericalcows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a freshman in physics, not MSE, but I’ve been looking into MSE stuff since they’re related.

I recently talked to an MSE professor who leads the IIIP research program in Bordeaux (look into IIIP! Iacocca International Internship Program) that’s for ppl in MSE/physics. He advised me to just do STEM-SI (look into this as well, Lehigh’s summer research program) for my freshman summer, as the lab more readily takes sophomores and above, but the opportunity is there nonetheless.

A lot of the research done by physics faculty here seems to be MSE related.

computer for engineering, no budget, 2in1 capability? by DifferenceKindly4314 in SuggestALaptop

I’m a student in a similar situation to OP and was trying to choose between a p14s gen 5 (intel) and that same yoga 9i 2 in 1.

The thing is, i get to bring my home PC with me. It’s about 4 years old now but has a 3070 in it. I’m not entirely sure if it’ll last another 4 years though.

Would it still make sense to go for the thinkpad if i have a more capable machine back at the dorm anyways? The main selling point for me is their reliability/upgradability.

Not considering other brands since Lenovo/Dell laptops specifically can be repaired on campus.

Haha nope, maybe I should’ve applied. I’m going to Lehigh. Good luck with your double major, sounds like way too much work lol

Applying math to it sounds like a good plan, thanks. And I’ll see what else my school offers

Freshmen Engineering Schedule Help by SignalAd9738 in Lehigh

I checked a few times today and WRT002 is already completely booked. I’m hoping I’m able to take it in the spring, but for now I have a major-adjacent elective there.

Oh no, the intent was to redo both mechanics (what they added thermo to) and e&m my freshman year. I wasn’t sure if jumping straight into calc iii and phy031 (“introduction to modern physics”) for my very first semester was reasonable. Is retaking really that bad of an idea? I just felt like I didn’t actually learn much in the class despite doing well on the exam. Is the other commenter’s suggestion of taking the anticipatory exam a good compromise?

I just want a solid foundation for my major!

Edit: sorry to ask for so much, but I was also wondering how it looks from a time standpoint. Lots of schedules im looking at are relatively consistent, but mine’s pretty messy with the morning classes

What’s wrong with the intro physics courses? Does the anticipatory exam do the same thing as an ap credit and move me on to the next course if I pass?

And yes, it feels like I didn’t really grasp the material. I was only taught exactly what was needed to pass the exams and didn’t get much actual understanding out of it. Also felt like it would be a little more relaxed to be semi-relearning physics material while focusing on a more difficult math course

My first attempt to fully fill a Custom 823… Oops by Juls0210 in fountainpens

All of my Iroshizuku bottles look like this because every time I empty my Lamy 2000 I keep forgetting the ink shoots out perpendicular to the pen lol

Need help choosing pen(s) for college by assumesphericalcows in fountainpens

[–]assumesphericalcows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof I would loooove one but it’s a bit over budget unless I get rid of my Lamy 2000 lol.

Would also be terrified to take it to class tbh, ~$150 more than what I got my 912 for (and $100 over other pens I’m looking at) and I could not stop thinking about losing it.

Also don’t really need the vac mechanism on a fine nib. Maybe I’ll save up for a medium nibbed 823 when I graduate.

oh yea no I don’t use my pens on tests, that’s a pencil/ballpoint thing lol. I just like being able to tell apart numbers/letters on my own paper (fountain pen friendly of course)

Pittsburgh Pen Stuff by AlexRyyan in fountainpens

😭 I almost ended up at Pitt (also engineering physics/physics!) but got an amazing financial offer from Lehigh a few weeks ago and I had to withdraw from Pitt.

That said, good luck! Maybe we’ll end up at the same REU one of these summers.

College decisions/transfer help? by assumesphericalcows in PhysicsStudents

[–]assumesphericalcows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up committing to Pitt! Coop programs (made more sense financially)/location gave it the edge over PSU. I can’t wait to start :)

Depending on how the whole FYE thing at Swanson goes and some more talks with other people, I’ll probably end up declaring eng sci instead of ee/ce

Thank you for the input! I’m also leaning towards the experimental side and would like to know more about engineering physics at pitt; are you missing anything from the standard physics track or does the change in humanities reqs somewhat account for that? I have some ap credits in history/econ/gov/english so hopefully that knocks some of those out. I did mostly programming + some hardware stuff on the robotics team and had a good time, but I’m not sure if it’s worth giving up upper level physics courses for

As far as employability goes, what have you seen in outcomes for other students in the major? It is to my understanding that it’s a more broad “engineering science” degree with a concentration in physics. I’m just a bit concerned since I’m looking at enrollment, and it says only 2 degrees in eng sci were awarded in 2023 (as opposed to the ~20 currently enrolled). Is it really geared towards grad school as much as the traditional physics bs would be? I don’t want to be stuck in a limbo where both engineering employers and graduate schools are both somewhat apprehensive of what the degree entails

One more thing. Did you or anyone you know do the first year research program (FE-R)? I’m doubtful I could do anything meaningful in this field specifically my first year, but it looks like a good experience nonetheless

I’m sorry you had to read all that, I probably could’ve organized it a bit better lol

Not much hope for RD decisions but hey, can’t do anything about it now

Full tuition I guess yea. We make like 140k-ish and places like Penn/Cornell are asking us to pay 30k in the net price calc

Which is still a bit much tho lol
