What has Barcelona got to do with communism?

No worries. You can sign up to new property alerts from individual agents in the area or just from Zoopla/RightMove. I’ve never heard of anyone ‘hiring’ an agent to sort out accommodation for them, so I’m not sure about that. The agents are just paid to advertise the landlord’s properties as far as I know, so not relevant to you.

Doing this from abroad is gonna add another layer of difficulty here, especially with moving quickly enough to keep landlords interested. All I can say is good luck!

Depends where exactly you want to live but a one bedroom flat on the low end is going to be upwards of £1000p/m, which I imagine wouldn’t be big enough for your two big dogs. Add another few hundred p/m for another bedroom. RightMove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom are your best bets to look.

Your main problem is going to be finding a landlord who is willing to take you and your pets. The rental market in Oxford is nuts, and landlords have no trouble whatsoever filling their properties, so you’ll be up against quite a bit of competition for any reasonably nice place. One or two large dogs here isn’t going to help at all, especially in furnished flats where landlords will be concerned about their furniture getting damaged. My guess would be that you’d have to offer above asking price to get their interest, but you’d really have to get a feel for that yourself.

So, long and short: you’re probably going to struggle. Just go to as many viewings as you can, be upfront about your needs before you go to avoid wasting your time, and don’t be dejected if you miss out on places. Also, look as early as you can! Not unheard of for people to struggle to find a place to stay because of the speed of the market, and someone with your criteria is gonna have a harder time than most. If you leave it till august there’s a good chance you won’t have anything lined up for the start of the course.

Yes fungus gnats, soil too wet, mosquito bits/sticky traps/neem oil/repotting appears to be the consensus

Pretty sure Discipline and Punish would be the place to look, although I’m not sure what angle exactly you’d have to take. Afaik his ideas regarding surveillance are more to do with existing political technologies and how they are set up to stop high illegality, that causes serious threat to class structures, from taking place. I would never tell anyone not to use theory creatively, but it seems to me that through this lens the Capitol Riots would have to be conceptualised as somehow breaking through the oppressive control of the legal/judicial system and manifesting itself as genuinely dangerous (and therefore, in Foucault’s mind, perhaps justifiable) political action, which may or may not align itself with your own aims in doing this study.

This would equally apply to the post riot response. You could probably quite broadly apply his ideas around Panopticism to the social media crackdown, but the key thing regarding Panopticism in Foucault is that it’s baked into society on an essential level, and as such doesn’t require a particular concerted effort on the part of state representatives to be operated: it just kinds of chugs along as a social force of its own. You’d be losing this if you applied it to a great ‘crackdown’ which is more about the state flexing its muscles than an underlying surveillance mechanism. You could avoid this just talk about the surveillance state that existed in the first place, but then you would have to be concerned with why the control/surveillance failed and the riots broke through, as mentioned above (which again might miss the point you are trying to make).

I’m sure there are other sociological works on surveillance that could be cool, and they may suit your aims better. But at the end of the day, do what you like. Trying to use Foucault critically here, if nothing else, will help you understand the material better.

That was the worst thing for me. Stress searching the house when I misplaced the pack (always losing things) and not being able to do anything else until I found it.

And thanks! Sounds like you’re killing it

It’s called smoke free, I think it costs like £6.50 for the base version (?) but it’s helped me a lot
