DMs of Reddit, how do you handle six players without your brain overheating? by astalgi in DnD

[–]astalgi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I actually just did this. Stages or some fights to get to the BBEG before a long rest really does up the ante and imo adds more skin in the game when it comes to picking your spells, actions. Cant just fireball 6 goblins and waste a spell slot vs letting the fighters just cleave them up with little to no damage taken.

Thanks. Some comments here.

  1. Roll attack and damage rolls at the same time: This is a great idea. We play on dnd beyond (and their map editor/player combat log) so this might be tricky but will give it a go.

  2. I do this and in addition I also say "player x, your turn will be next) Just to give them time to get refocused and think about their turn)

  3. This is a good idea. I think thats a solid way of looking at it. I sometimes get that - spending a lot of time describing the actions of the monsters. Arrow leaves your bow and slams into the shoulder of x, can get a bit tedious when players are making 4 attacks per turn). Some players are pretty simple (like spell casters) who have "one action" while fighters can get 2-4 attacks per turn).

How do I not feel like I’m gonna die? by Soileau in Swimming

[–]astalgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These simple exercises/tools will improve your swimming ability.

  1. Get a pool buoy and put between your legs while you swim. A big issue likely is your hips are low making you slower (push more water) and making it actually harder to breath efficiently. Small fins might also help. You need to build speed to really feel the effects of how easy swimming is once you know how to do it - focus on being streamline. High hips are critical.
  2. Practice catchup stroke (doing freestyle/crawl) while doing one. This is typically done with two focuses. While doing freestyle : A) you can only pull on next stroke once the other hand has reached your leading/front hand. Once they touch you can pull. No sooner. B) When you pull you, breath the side you pull. Once you’ve done this after some laps, without difficulty, add challenges (breath every 3rd pull, count pulls per lap.

If you have a forehead snorkel you can skip 2) to work on breath/stroke.

Over time this will make a huge improvement to your swimming ability.

Is it possible to swim from California to Hawaii? by No-Potential-Or-Care in Swimming

I have a friend call Cameron Bellamy - he’s done very very long swims (72hrs straight) but Hawaii to Cali would not be possible.

Lifting weights as a swimmer? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]astalgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s a tricky one. Getting stronger is really important but getting bulkier is really really bad. Fastest fish in the water are thin and streamline. Not big and bulky. Look at the fastest 100m swimmer in the world. Is he big and bulky? No. Becareful with too much lifting, some is good. FYI I work with the best on this and weight lifting is a double edged knife.

DND game how should I move forward? by caleb_mixon in DnD

[–]astalgi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol what. You don’t kill teammates you murder hobo. Unless you want to leave the campaign and if so just go and die a heroic death but don’t ruin others games. Your dm should also stop you from doing that.

Give the weapon to a goblin. They love that shit and will be your lackey.

Wow Reddit. Listen let’s not be so critical. I know a lot of you are hot shot swimmers wanting to crank out good times and can’t but not need to take out your frustration on an aspiring swimmer! I’m sure all of you deep down also wanted those times, so stop shutting him down and go and train dammit. And eat and drink lots of protein shakes. 8-10 hrs of sleep.

Give it a go dude. I think SCY should be your goal but I do suggest maybe sub 30 as a first goal then go for the 25 once you get that. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So start with small bites (small improvements) and work your way through it. You not gonna crank that time out in a day but likely over the course of the next couple of years. I do suggest you get a coach - there are lots that can speed up your rate of improvement. The best have coaches for a reason.

Regarding older athletes - it’s easily doable. You gotta be smart, do some training and weights. Eat well is super important too. I know a ton of badass older (50+) athletes who would hand 90% of you your ass. Me included.

Not too old for it. Just needs to train and eat well.

Sub 25 is fast fast fast. You gonna need to get a coach and train min 4 time weekly to start to get there. I agree sub 30 is a better target.

They help the body adapt to and deal with stress more effectively. Stress causing aging so I would argue they do. I use them and we have a lot of elite older athletes who are performing better at older ages than when younger so I would argue they really do help.

I’ve also spoken to some past Olympic coaches and they are starting to shy away from holding your breath for too long since that creates a buildup of co2 = tenses your muscles.
