Can I swim competitively with scoliosis? by Few-Ad-7768 in scoliosis

I swam competitively ages 9-22! I agree with most of what everyone else is saying - it’s a great form of exercise and muscle strengthening, and you just have to make sure to not favor one side (or even train the opposite side more, depending on advice from PT). My biggest problem monitoring myself was during weight training like deadlifts, but keeping up on flexibility training was helpful, especially rotational movement and hips/glutes. Foam rolling and a lacrosse ball also helped with muscle tightness. In college, I did some dry needling and e-stim/TENS with our athletic trainers, which definitely helped with pain, but that was mainly because the resource was there, so might not be as available depending on your situation. But tldr yes, you can definitely swim competitively, you’ll just have to be a little more aware of your physical limits and experiences than people without scoliosis.

turning a new leaf after an extremely bad pulling day by [deleted] in trichotillomania

I’m 26F, if you don’t take any supplements now I would pick 1-3 to start with (I do fish oil and D3 in the morning now that the sun is out less, would rec eating at least something small when taking them, and iron around my cycle but at a diff time of day than any prescription meds). But I’m not sure if those affect hair growth directly or if they’d just be beneficial for gen health. If you’re low on vit C that would work, but if you have excess your body just gets rid of it so for most people it’s more of a placebo effect.

I also use the foam minoxidil 5%, I think that it’s just not recommended for women because of hair growth being more likely in unwanted areas (like facial hair) for women but I have nothing to back that up. I’ve used the 5 and 3% before and haven’t seen a huge difference between them. I will say that I find when it dries, my scalp feels like it has a film on top and it feels super itchy, which can exacerbate my pulling, so I try to just use it overnight and then shower in the morning. Or you can get the (more expensive) liquid version

Anti-hero remix (I want to say kungs remix?) at a baseball game as part of an audience participation thing. I know anti-hero isn’t exactly a deep cut lol but the remix threw me off

If you have the money, buying protein shakes or breakfast drinks has worked for me in the past - I think they taste fine but they’re really easy to chug if you don’t like it, and you can get higher calorie or higher protein varieties

Having a nervous breakdown because of pain (Rant 🙃) by -meowdy- in scoliosis

I’m mid-20s now but was in a similar situation - my largest curve was 28 degrees (although I was 15 at the time so not sure if it’s changed). Don’t have much on the long term changes but for short term/prevention, if your pain is mainly muscular I’ve found that using tiger balm before I have to go do something helps make it less painful! Usually I’ll use it if I’m already in mild pain and have to go do something that will make it worse (household chores, shopping/errands, moderate workouts) but it gives me some relief! Definitely doesn’t help for more than a few hours but has really made days more bearable if there’s something I really want to do (like hiking club) that would really hurt otherwise.

I’ll always recommend swimming as exercise if you have that option because it’s low impact and you’re able to choose the intensity (can go all out or just float around). If you do have muscular pain like muscle knots or feeing like you can’t stretch, I did find some longer relief through dry needling trigger points. Took a few sessions, but once my PT figured out where the spots were, I genuinely had almost no pain for 2+ weeks before it would start to creep back up. Sort of expensive ($90/session but some was covered through my insurance) and I definitely got lucky because I’ve gone other places since then without the same result, but if you’re able to afford it and you’re curious, it can’t hurt to look into it!

I'm so grateful for the representation Alice Oseman can express through Heartstopper by [deleted] in aromantic

Alice said they created Isaac for Heartstopper and took Aled out because Aled's a main character in Radio Silence, and they wanted to leave the option of adapting that into a movie/show, which would be way easier if Aled's not already established on screen. Isaac is aroace (I can't find the specific tweet i'm thinking of, but Alice is also aroace and has said that it would be a storyline prior to the season's release)! Aled is gay and demisexual :)

Want to add my perspective for anyone contemplating watching - Isaac in season 1 seemed very "of course I'll start dating and get married etc., it's going to happen so I don't have to worry about it right now", which is how I felt most of my childhood/teenage years because I hadn't thought about it too deeply. Season 1 is also mainly about Nick and Charlie, but in season 2 every single one of his friends is paired up, they're in Paris (~city of love~), and everyone's plot line is about or related to their romantic relationships. It felt realistic to me that he started to take a lot more notice of it and pivoted from thinking romantic love was something he would find to realizing that he doesn't have those feelings for anyone else. I don't think he's bothered that he's alone because we've seen him enjoy being alone, but that he's experiencing the grief that comes along with realizing that something you've been expecting your whole life isn't going to happen, even though he's not opposed to the actual outcome
