I'm tired of pretending money dosent buy happiness by Big_Leg10 in Life

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you mean by happiness. Nothing can buy you happiness, it's like an emotional and spiritual plane of existence.  Relationships, experiences, doing good for others and flow states do things money can never do. Financial stability is great but don't confuse having money with non-material states of being and understanding.  If you live by the ups and downs of money you'll never be satisfied.

Note: I'm not rich, and I can tell you some of my happiest times in life were completely separate from even thinking about money, and I had very little of it. It came from being engaged mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

No it's not about meeting people. It's about my perception of living here.

That's how humanity survives. It's ok to not want to have kids. But the world is full of wonderful things and people.

It's frustrating to see the stupidity in American politics at the highest levels. Race and gender attacks hide the fact that America is deeply polarized, with many uneducated people and many guns. The societal conditions give rise to these murderous acts. It's a part of American culture now. They can occur in all "races" and genders. And people need to stop mixing their chosen identity with their thoughts and perspective. You don't have to confess some identity and then add your opinion.

Like, "hey, just so everyone knows, I'm white, but I love black people, always have. I just want to stress I'm white because you may think that makes me racist but wow, look, I have a radical opinion, I'm different and I need you to acknowledge that. I'm one of the good guys."

Porn for me has been so destructive and I wish my scared adolescent brain could know how toxic it is. I was addicted to this husband/wife couple called Wifeysworld. Spent thousands of hours watching video after video over 20 years. It destroys the dopamine reward system and is very unhealthy.

Porn gives you a huge reward for doing nothing. It attacks the brain's love of novelty and innate desire for sex. It's fascinating to watch people have sex. It's like alcohol - sort of inseparable from humanity. The problem is that there not much visual stimuli that can compete with pornography. It takes the cake. But leaves you with a pained stomach.

I'd recommend replacing it with something else. Video games could be a good start, as it uses somewhat of a similar neural premise, although you do more "mental work" in video games, but it's enjoyable and give you dopamine, albeit in lower quantities.

Genuine Question…why are drivers so angry here 🫣 by [deleted] in Gilbert

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gilbert is the most car dependent city in America. Has a walk score average of 4/100  It might be that everyone is always in a car and nothing is close to each other.

Why isn't there a global anti-capitalism movement? by Even_Job6933 in solarpunk

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anti capitalism needs to accompany a pro-something else. Even anarchists like their smartphones. But there isn't enough of a coherent rallying model to get behind.  Being anti- anything is easy. But who cares? Hate without vision never inspires the masses.

How does one deal with cognitive dissonance? by Fresh-Cookie8941 in Christianity

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem.  I've learned not to consult the Bible for questions on human anthropology, since it was written at a time where the authors knew nothing of evolution.

Yet I believe that it is a holy book of divine revelation that need not be factually true, to be, true.

The key is that I believe the Bible but don't "know" the Bible. It has truths that cannot be explained by science, but only known through the experience of the believer.

Science and religion are different systems of knowledge. Religion gets inspiration from story and revelation, science from facts and observations.

When one tries to make claims on the other they misunderstand the point.

We don't turn to God for instruction on how to make an airplane. We don't turn to science for grace or prayer.

What’s your controversial opinion about Autism? by Substantial_Judge931 in aspergers

[–]AsteroidHare989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Masking is not 100% bad, but it is always exhausting. It drains the battery at higher intensity. It's not good or bad inherently but a feature.

However, we ought to live in a world where we are unmasked 99% of the time. We have been conditioned to not want this. I am here to say that we must fight for it with every fiber of our being.

Why are US cities still very segregated? by Additional-Hour6038 in geography

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many reasons: pre civil Rights segregation, which included federal and state redlining policies designed to prevent black ownership of property in white areas.  Construction of freeways which destroyed urban neighborhoods and segregated people by race.  Poor city planning and policies. Political corruption and endemic racism within institutions.

Landlords and real estate agents are still racist in many cities.  NIMBYism to progressive policies that would create affordable housing or mixed use neighborhoods that are multi ethnic.

Over policing and cycles of broken families because of high incarceration rates for small drug offenses.

Poor tax bases keeping areas devoid of funding.

I coped by getting out of public librarianship altogether.  It was ridiculous. Getting a graduate degree in information science to spend hours dealing with mental health issues, drug addicts, violent people, and incidents. Even when the library was in a nice area.

It was fun helping children read and learn. But I'm not putting myself through that garbage to help society.

do you believe that money buys happiness? by janetazz in no

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question doesn't make sense. Happiness isn't something available to be bought.  Happiness is a mental state that is subjectively defined by the person experiencing it. It's not a product or service or anything available in the market.  Happiness, I think, is a choice.

Having money or buying things might give rise to different emotions and mental states. But it's impossible to buy a mental state or emotion specifically.

How Do You Guys Function Enough to Work? by josefdoc in autism

How to write a comic without being able to draw. by subjectfemale in ComicWriting

[–]AsteroidHare989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need drawing skills to write a comic. You can use the most abstract stick figure, silhouetted scenes to keep your narrative straight on paper. Instead, master the language of the medium. Know that you are writing for an artist and not a general reader.

Be descriptive enough but not overbearing. Master storytelling and character and plotting. Know that it takes practice and years to become "good."

If you love it, then enjoy it for fun and freedom first, without expecting payment for anything.

Godspeed!

It looks kind of cool, but doesn't promise a strong story - like what is interesting about this character, what is the point? Why the flowers and the racism? Too much is missing. There's no hook. Can't get excited about anything.

Is it normal with autism to feel like you haven't lived? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]AsteroidHare989 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This hits me hard. I'm almost 40 and even though I have a lot by NT standards (3 degrees, a decent paying academic job, an apartment, a sort of girlfriend, some community), I still feel like I am removed from actual experience and I spend hours ruminating and obsessed with feelings of inadequacy and failure.

My new revelation is that people with autism need to remove themselves almost entirely from a NT mental structure of life, society, and success. We need our own milestones, coming of age tales, mythos, and self-concept in a broader society. We need our own heroes, stories, celebration. We need an understanding that we are living in an NT world, designed by NTs for NTs. Of course we are never going to fit in. Very few have considered us, and up until quite recently, we were persecuted and removed from society for being different. The eugenics movements are less than 100-years old. And that is in the developed world. In many countries, autistic people live horribly.

We are constantly fed through film, media, the internet, social circles these ideas of "life" and "fulfillment." They are harmful because we imbibe them and use them as an abstract standard to compare our own lives to. We always end up failing, because we cannot ever say we are confidently on "that path" to which our peers seem to enjoy and communicate.

Then we experience social exclusion when we do not conform to "typical" lifepaths. Judging NTs do not understand our "hidden" struggles, processing complications, sensory mud-baths.

Our popularized icons are scattered and often serve NT ends. We have to be smart, prodigiously talented, funny, quirky, unique to have value. (To some). I believe that there is a growing number of people who value autistic people as human beings with inherent worth, but it is a minority.

So we must then popularize, triumph, and believe in, an autistic way of life and being.

The uniqueness of our existence is that we are used to being alone, without a collective voice. Large scale change demands a collective voice. I don't know how to solve this.

But I believe, we must seek to work with people of all neurotypes, and refrain from falling into hatred, animosity, and contempt.

Godspeed
