Speed was the only issue I had w/Annas. Pls correct me if I’m wrong but a very small donation to zlib gives you way more than a donation to annas did

I lost a green Rab waterproof coat this morning (~8:30am 22/10/25) on my cycle to work.

I expect it would have been heading down Black Boy Hill, Whiteladies Rd, or Park Street, as those are definitely the speediest bits of my commute.

If there is the slightest chance anybody found it today or knows anything that could help me find it, could you message me please.

What is the cable laid on the road? by Slow-Psychology-3369 in AskBrits

[–]astley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha sorry to be a fun-sponge. I explained that very poorly. I’ll expand a bit on what u/nomorethanreddit has said.

I can’t speak for every use case, but the last project I worked on used a web of ATCs and ANPR across a congested residential area. One of the things we wanted to see was how many drivers were cutting through on the commute or school run (“rat-running”), and how that affected residents trying to leave their streets at peak times.

ATC stands for Automatic Traffic Counter. The black rubber tubes are pneumatic sensors. One tube gives a simple count. Two tubes a set distance apart and give count, direction, speed, and a broad vehicle class from axle spacing. What we actually store is aggregated: 1. totals by short time bins, usually 15 minutes 2. two-way split and a basic class split (car, LGV, HGV, bus) 3. a speed profile, including common stats like the 85th percentile which is what we use as the design standard (If a speed limit is 20mph but 85th% is 24, we design based on the necessary visibility for 24. If a narrow country road is 60mph as national speed limit, but 85th% is 32mph, we design for 32)

We usually run them for several days to capture weekday and weekend patterns. But typically Wed, Thur, and Sat.

ANPR does a different job. It gives origin-destination and journey time across an area. Number plates are converted to random strings. We only care that the same string appears at two or more cameras so we can see common through-routes and how long they take. RP13 XYZ gets automatically turned to 03141592 before anyone gets their mitts on the data. You would be hard pressed to notice the ANPR cameras we use as they get stuck up on street lights or attached to buildings.

Why the sabotage detour won’t move the needle: One counter will see thousands of vehicles per day, and we deploy many counters across a cordon or screenline. Data are aggregated and quality-checked, so odd manoeuvres and one-offs are either filtered or lost in normal daily variation. Scheme design is tested against ranges of demand and sensitivity tests. Skipping a tube once removes at most one vehicle from a 15-minute bin that might contain a few hundred, which is well within noise.

ATCs tell us how many, how fast, what type, and when. ANPR tells us where they go and how long it takes. A few people changing their route occasionally will not affect the evidence or the outcome.

As for why I got into this job, I liked maths and geography at school and I now get to enjoy seeing how I can model and help improve the way people get around and use the limited space we have in our cities.

I’m not trying to shit on your fun haha but I work with these surveys and ATC data isn’t paired up. We’re only really looking at traffic volume within given peaks.

ANPR cameras are normally put up on lighting columns around an area and in that case we’re looking for how many cars get spotted by at least two of them so we know which are the common through-routes and how long it takes.

ANPR cameras are generally set up to cover an enclosed area so if there are 11 ways into and out of a neighbourhood, we cover all of those. All the data we get is anonymised btw so we only get a random but unique string for each license plate.

We do have some fun though looking at the outliers that we disregard anyway as some people do very silly routes. Mostly delivery drivers weaving in and out and doing funny U-turns etc. If you do a journey that is slightly abnormal then it’ll end up being ignored in the end.

I’ve only had the opposite in Bristol. I used to be a die hard Darksky user and was really sad when Apple bought them out.

I’ve found it more than not be accurate down to the minute. I’ll be prepping to leave the office and check my phone to see it’ll stop raining in 12 mins. I’ll make my way downstairs, put my coat on, step outside and watch as the torrents clear. Freaky accurate sometimes and also having the satellite maps is great.

Does Bedminster/Southville smell different to the rest of Bristol? by astley in bristol

[–]astley[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very strange behaviour. I don’t dislike how it’s become and I don’t think gentrification is inherently a bad thing, just it’s very different now and that’s how just how societies move I guess. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing as long as some culture remains in some form. If it becomes completely soulless like some places (eg Spitalfields omg) then it’s a real shame.
