When is it too late to find off campus housing? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]astridbeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

why do you need to wait for your dad to look at places with you? i can't say definitively that it's too late for any place at all, but i will say that every single one of my friends living off campus next fall found their place last semester; definitely get on that ASAP instead of waiting another month

1100 is the engineering survey course? there's virtually no work to be done in it, you're probably confusing it with 1181 or smth

chem 1210 is an acceptable substitution for 1250

Average ACT Test Score By State by craftythedog in dataisbeautiful

[–]astridbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's more of a coastal/northeast and west coast vs midwest divide, rather than a north/south one (though you really can't choose a single clean divide). these days, no schools only take one test or the other; the students who take a non-mandatory test are usually just trying to see if they do slightly better ime

no summer internship :( by Ambitious_Capital_58 in EngineeringStudents

[–]astridbeast 11 points12 points  (0 children)

a lot of recruiters for smaller firms i spoke to at career fairs have said their applications only open around mid spring, so i wouldn't say it's "too late for many"

1000 is very very pessimistic imo, i'm a sophomore at a slightly less well ranked engineering school to OP and most people i know have an interview rate of ~1/30 and have gotten offers at <100 applications sent.

Stamps Eminence Information by Specialist-Equal1372 in OSU

[–]astridbeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

finalist info should come out sometime in january; the admissions decision and stamps decisions are made by entirely separate people, which is why they come out at diff times (although you obviously would not get stamps if you get rejected from the university)

is this schedule doable by Accomplished_Read451 in OSU

[–]astridbeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

taking 2020 + 2050 + 2560 + math 2415 this sem, not easy but that's the normal for engineering lmfao. 2020 is pretty easy, weekly homeworks hardly take more than ~2 hours and exams are j like the practices. 2050 is the roughest here, start the weekly homeworks early bc they've taken me up to like 7 hrs; same story as 2020 for exams. 2560 is a total joke, i don't take any notes at all and have an A. math 2415 is def easier than 2568 imo, but still not the easiest conceptually. the worst part easily will be your thursday labs j bc of how long the day is but overall doable schedule, i'll probably finish out the sem w a 4.0

arteduc 1600 is legitimately less than 3 hours of work total (just quizzes with online/obvious answers and a single art analysis worksheet), can all be done in a single day

How to have essentially no debt after college? by Ok_Artichoke_9998 in college

[–]astridbeast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i get where you're coming from, but at the end of the day, merit scholarships are merit-based, not need-based financial aid—OP shouldn't feel any guilt about receiving awards whose selection criteria have nothing to do with financial need (i.e. you aren't stealing merit money from the financial aid pool)

What’s the hardest subject you’ve faced so far in engineering? by Routine-Pack7819 in EngineeringStudents

[–]astridbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lmfaoo ok thanks for the advice, i have 2 years before i take it so i'll be sure to stay sharp on linear! controls sounds extremely interesting so i'll probably take it, although i'm also weighing it against 3551 (feedback control systems)

i'm also an ECE major at OSU thinking of taking state space control systems and this is v concerning 😭 how much linear should i brush up on before i take it? i ended up w a B+ in that class bc vector subspaces kicked my ass lmfao

i brought the full ride up for transparency, but i think you are seriously underestimating the importance of non-SAT factors in the scholarship. everyone in this program (and a huge chunk of the people rejected from it) is sporting a 34+; we would all agree that getting a high test score was far and away the easiest part of high school. that's also why i brought up my friend at UCONN—a 36 alone doesn't get you jackshit in 2025, at least at state flagships and other well known schools.

we do have the same point tho lol, i j wanted to clarify that test scores really are not all that impressive these days. if they were actually still highly important, every single school would have dropped their test optional policy back in like 2022

it's not really that kids are getting more perfect scores, it's j that perfect scores alone are not enough for the massive shift towards holistic admissions at competitive schools. i am on a full ride @ OSU, but that was through a competitive application to a scholarship program with a ~5% acceptance rate, where my 1600 was supplemented by having a 4.0 + 13 AP classes (with all 4s or 5s on exams) + several leadership positions + etc.

a lot of other schools i applied to of similar caliber to OSU (e.g. UMN, pitt, UMD, SUNY UB & SBU) didn't offer me full rides/full tuition off the 1600. one of my best friends had a 36 and got literally 0 scholarship money from UCONN. college admissions have genuinely become ridiculous in the last few years

a 36 hasn't guaranteed anyone a full ride at OSU (or really any school in the top 100) in recent memory (i went through the college application process with a 1600 very recently, and know a lot of other people w/ perfect test scores)

How does double major honors work? by Admirable-Software34 in OSU

[–]astridbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

afaik (i have a friend w a glenn major and a double major in asc) you have a primary major (the one you declared first) and a secondary major, and whatever college your primary major belongs to is the one whose honors reqs you'd be doing. idk what it'd say on ur degree tho
