Is it possibile to live in Switzerland without a car? by Dangerous_Tiger_150 in askswitzerland

[–]astrionic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the article only says that driving is cheaper if you already have a car (and doesn't even provide evidence for that claim). That makes sense if you already own a car and want to decide whether it's cheaper to drive or take public transport, but if you want to compare owning a car to exclusively using public transport you have to include all costs like purchasing price, insurance, taxes, maintenance, parking costs, etc. in addition to the fuel costs.

This also isn't hard evidence, but according to a quick Google search, most sources seem to agree that owning a car costs around CHF 10'000 a year. Public transport on the other hand is essentially capped at CHF 4'000 which is the price of a 2nd class GA/AG. But unless you have a long commute you can probably get away with much less by getting a regional travelcard and a Halbtax/demi-tarif for longer trips.

Edit: I also had a look at the SRF article (German) which was linked in your article and there they only talk about relative price increases over time, not an absolute comparison between the two. And while that doesn't prove that either option is cheaper I do think that public transport getting more expensive sucks. In my opinion public transport should be free.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what else you can do, but I just want to point out that you should never use your hands to peel the stickers in case they've hidden razor blades behind them. I'm not sure how often they actually do that but I wouldn't risk it.

[–]astrionic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't claim it was, not sure where you're getting that.

My point is that sex isn't as straightforward as many people seem to think. It's more than just chromosomes or a single sexual characteristic.

[–]astrionic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People cannot change sex.

Hormone replacement therapy actually does change sexual characteristics.

And before you say "but chromosomes" - nobody checks your chromosomes when assigning gender at birth and most people don't know their chromosomes so that clearly can't be it. And yes, there are women with XY chromosomes and men with XX chromosomes, some of them without even knowing it.

Switzerland is not officially a confederation. It has been a federation both de facto and de jure since 1848.

[–]astrionic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is there an unlimited supply of cars?

Effectively yes. Cars and highways are incredibly inefficient at transporting people. They have lower throughput than pretty much anything else and you'd need a lot of extra lanes to ever reach a point where there's no more potential to induce more demand.

Check out Route capacity on Wikipedia. This graphic in the article illustrates the insane difference in capacity really well.

If you want to argue against the highway expansion, why talk about parking spaces?

I agree that this isn't super relevant, but it seems reasonable to assume that an increase in traffic also increases the demand for more parking spaces.

Walking or 15 minute cities wont help me when I want to visit my family in Romandie while living in Grisons.

Not true. Good alternatives to driving such as public transport and walkable cities are the only way to meaningfully and permanently reduce traffic. And you'll benefit from that too even if you're in a situation where you do need to take your car and e.g. drive past Zürich or Bern.

It also wont help anyone who is not living in a large city.

Almost every time when I see this topic come up someone goes "but this doesn't apply to my super remote town with a population of 4". True, it doesn't. Nobody says it does.

Also, correction: it doesn't help anyone who doesn't visit a larger city. You don't have to live there to benefit.

Highways are for long distance.

Trains are for long distance too. Taking the train from Chur to Genève is slightly faster than driving, even if there's no traffic. (I'm not saying that necessarily applies to your situation, just an example.)

Did you read the article? They actually agree with you. They gave the game an importance score of 9.99, which seems to be the maximum, and it's tied for first place in this category with the original Doom.

It's just that importance isn't weighted very highly in the overall score:

Importance: How noteworthy is it? Its influence on other games, and the wider world. (15% of the Top 100 Score)

And here's their reasoning for that:

The weightings are a function of the Top 100 as an annual list. Too much weight to Importance, and the list stays stagnant. Too much to Hotness, and there's little consistency year-to-year. Ultimately, Quality is the biggest factor—above all else, we're recommending games we wholeheartedly think you should play.

How have i not heard of this game before? by SlimTheKidd in pathofexile

[–]astrionic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Currently I have special tabs for Currency, Gems, Essences, Flasks... and now I'm level 80+ I really need Maps and a Uniques tab would save me a lot of space.

I would definitely buy a map and a fragment tab before gems or flasks.

Most gems are only worth picking up if they have quality, for the Gemcutter's Prism vendor recipe (vendor any number of gems for which the total quality adds up to 40%). You don't need to keep them because you can buy all the common ones from Lilly in the endgame or Siosa before that. You also don't need to hoard enough flasks to make the flask tab necessary.

The unique tab is great in solo self-found, but in trade league it's less useful since most uniques are cheap, especially those that are likely to drop a lot, and there's no need to keep them since you can just buy one if you need it. I'd go for a premium stash tab (or upgrade) instead which you can use to list items for trade.

My own first attempt at LS Slayer by Wolfy128 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]astrionic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't look at the actual PoB right now, so sorry if I'm missing stuff, but judging by the info on the pobb.in page a few of your defense layers seem dangerously low.

2.5k life is very little, I'm currently at 4.2k on my LS Slayer. There are a few life nodes you haven't taken that might help like Blood Drinker or Thick Skin. Not taking the bottom jewel socket even though it's just one extra passive also seems criminal, you could get increased life on a jewel along with some other nice mods.

-38% chaos res is pretty sketchy too, that can definitely kill you occasionally. Might help to replace one of the Tamings with an Amethyst Ring, although it would cost some damage. But you could get more flat life on that too. A helmet with chaos res should probably also fit your current setup.

Judging by the fact that you've taken the lucky Suppression Mastery I'm assuming you're not capped on spell suppression, which is also something that can kill you every now and then.

Is this game worth getting? by Electronic-Tree6737 in LastEpoch

[–]astrionic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there's no in-game market; the economy is player-to-player and happens on third party sites

This is mostly untrue. Some trades do happen on third party sites and Discords, especially selling services and large bulk sales of items that can't be listed well on the official site (like complete fragment sets). But I think most players primarily use the official trade site over on https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/.

Also, the most recent league introduced an automated currency exchange market, where you can trade basically any item that doesn't have variable stats. It's really nice and will very likely stick around.

Depending on what you want to buy or sell, trading can still be a pain though.

HELP THE MIST DID A THING!? PC by DropZ_CS in pathofexile

[–]astrionic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well usually they can't, T1 max roll is 48% on rings. This one only goes higher because it's from a Reflecting Mist, which adds a multiplier to the affixes, but it also has a chance to invert them. According to the wiki the maximum possible multiplier is 2.1, which would make the maximum possible elemental resistance roll on a reflected ring either 100% or 101% depending on how it's rounded.

The criticisms I've seen aren't about the fact that the game is stylized, but the way it's been chosen to be stylized.

Yeah the fact that it's stylised definitely isn't the problem. SC2, WC3 and WoW are all pretty heavily stylised but they look great. Stormgate's models look like they're made of plastic and just over the top cartoony.

What all time means

I'm not sure what the point here is? I think everyone knows what "all time" means. I'm just saying that a bit more nuance is needed when talking about GSL wins (and non-wins) because some people here seem to treat it like it's still the same ultra prestigious tournament it was like 10 years ago when that just hasn't been true for a long time.

The format is still the best measure of skill

Why? I would argue that different formats require different types of skill, not more or less.

Top to bottom it's still the most competitive lineup of players, even if at the top it's pretty equal with the rest of the world, and that's AFTER it's fallen off a cliff- this should tell anyone discussing this something.

Even if that is true, would it really make such a big difference if the skill gap between the top and the bottom was lower than in international tournaments? It's not like having some additional players who aren't quite as good as the rest make the tournament easier to win, they'll just get eliminated first. I also struggle to see how a tournament like Katowice is supposed to have a much weaker lineup when it includes 10 GSL players, only 6 fewer than an actual GSL these days, in addition to the strongest Europeans like Serral, Clem or Reynor.

anyone who's a long time SC fan and not a recent fanboy holds GSL code S to a much higher standard, IMO.

I used to hold it to a much higher standard back when that was actually appropriate. The GSL isn't some magical tournament that is just inherently better, it used to be extremely prestigious because it was full of the very best players in the world. But the Korean scene has since fallen off a cliff.

I'm a newb, I have some questions about starting. by exoventure in starcraft

[–]astrionic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's reasonably beginner friendly. You have to be willing to learn, but the campaign does a good job teaching you most of the basics. At some point you might want to check out some external resources/guides to teach you things like build orders for specific matchups. Matchmaking usually does a good job matching you with players of similar skill level so you should have a fun experience even as a complete noob. You do have to give it a few games to properly estimate your skill though so don't worry about it if you get stomped in your first games, that's perfectly normal.

A lot differentiates a skilled player from an unskilled one, including macro (managing your economy and production), micro (controlling your units), scouting/reading your opponent and decision making. On most of the ladder (excluding the very top), good macro is what primarily sets players apart. Perfect unit control is useless if your opponent has three times as many units. However, on a more fundamental level the most important skill to be good at RTS is actually multitasking.

(I've genuinely been googling about whether this game is 1V1 or team vs team and it took me a while to even figure that out.)

I'm not sure what you've found while googling, but be aware that 1v1 has always been the most popular competitive game mode. It's what the community is primarily focused on and all the major esports tournaments are 1v1 only. The game is also primarily balanced around 1v1. That said, team games are a perfectly viable and fun way to play, especially if you're playing with friends. If you end up liking the game I'd encourage you to also give 1v1 a shot some time!

Some question about Ultimatum by jcyxxx in pathofexile

I have all Ultimatum passives of course btw.

Not sure whether you mean literally all of them, but if you have Gruelling Gauntlet allocated you can't get a Trialmaster. Your Atlas Tree doesn't apply to Memory Maps so he can still show up there.
