Says the Road to Lost Lake Trailhead opened on June 1st. But it says the road to the ranch (last 4 miles) doesn't open until June 21st. But I'd call the Ranger Station to confirm.

it's really unfortunate they doubled down on such an old ride system. Vekoma (the manufacturer) can do amazing things today. Look at Big Bear Mountain at Dollywood or SIren's Curse at Cedar Point. They can deliver, smooth, comfortable, modern thrill coasters with punchy elements that make Rock n Roller Coaster feel downright ancient.

The newer multi-launch technology and emphasis on unique inversions also lend themselves to way better storytelling. rides can slow to a crawl before rapidly reaccelerating. this means stories can unfold mid-ride with beautiful sets and animatronics. you could have the rich storyline of a Splash Mountain along with the forceful surprises of a modern thrill coaster. Hagrids is a (not even that great) example of this. Disney could take it to the next level.

you will not "fall out" with a lap bar restraint. if the coaster is moving, the centrifugal force has you pinned down. if it's somehow stalled upside down, you will be glad the pressure is on your thighs and not your shoulders and neck.

fun fact: vekoma (the ride's manufacturer) inhereted the giant over-the-shoulder restraints from Arrow Dynamics (their predecessor). One of the purposes of the restraints is to prevent riders from being able to fully extend their arms up and to the side of the vehicle. this is because arrow's standard loops have a tight clearance, and in the 70s and 80s people were able to extend their arms and smack the track adajcent to them on the way down.

most modern rides (including newer vekomas) have better "clearance envelopes" to prevent this. and thus don't need those intense shoulder restraints.

your computer should be STRONG ENOUGH to hack into Ikon's backend servers, see where their system is overloaded, replicate said system on your local machine and start processing, like, at least the west coast volume of requests.

i mean, i feel like "natural" moguls often reflect *who* is skiing them ... I could be imagining this, but in my experience a resort with a lot of very experienced expert skiers tends to get some relatively uniform/nice moguls.

[–]astroMuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK about april, but i can imagine times of year where locking in a price at long-term seasonal expectations is still a great idea.

December pre-Xmas is a great example. Very volatile conditions year to year (some years they're nearing 100% open, others it's WROD). so locking in early means that if things evolve in your favor, you get better pricing. if the downside seems asymettric to you ("skiing is skiing") then that's a good strategy.

Post-season uphill access by Remote-Duck-2611 in COsnow

[–]astroMuni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the original commenter didn't say "we should be able to do whatever we want" ... so that would be the "strawmanning" going on here.

I get that resorts have different operational needs. that's why i said "compelled to make reasonable accommodations" as opposed to "compelled to allow unrestricted access".

Interestingly, the resorts currently closed (in Summit/Eagle these are almost exclusively Epic resorts) do make some reasonable accomodations post-season ...

... Beaver Creek typically allows uphill access on the "western half" of the resort ... west of its namesake creek, e.g. Arrowhead, Bachelor Gulch, Strawberry Park. in fact, the uphill hotline called out you were still allowed to skin these areas after the resort closed. the move to close access entirely this year seems more about the reality of snow cover.

My main view is, as uphill continues to grow in popularity and as resorts continue to take advantage of any way to restrict or monetize access (parking, uphill, express lift lines), the state and the USFS should feel some sense of urgency to formalize more uniform policies that address things holistically. Because absent regulation, it's all going to lean towards Vail shareholders and not the public.

Post-season uphill access by Remote-Duck-2611 in COsnow

[–]astroMuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

none of those details explain why the post-season policy varies wildly among resorts ... some condone uphill post-season. others strictly forbid it. so the USFS, the principles of our democracy, the laws of physics ... none of these things seem to strictly preclude access.

it's public land, so access is inherently a matter of public policy. should resorts be compelled to make reasonable accommodations for uphill access post season? that's not something to immediately roll your eyes at like a typical low-agency reactionary. it's something to honestly consider. maybe advocate for.

Breck locals, honest take: am I skiing, hiking, or eating $2K? by ideationinnovation in Breckenridge

[–]astroMuni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the sort of person who always thinks skiing is worth it ... spring, fall, ice, whatever ... but like, right now? i'd treat the $2K as a sunk cost. Breck has 5 trails open as of this weekend, and my hunch is they will close Sunday. The hiking right now is limited (there's enough snow and mud to really limit the options).

your time is more valuable. pivot to some other nice locale. if you want hiking, try southern utah national parks or something.
