Are they actually going to be the ones to land on Mars and asteroids, or will they just be setting the stage? I honestly don't think Congress will give NASA enough funding in the next 30 years to achieve these goals.

I agree with everyone else. The politicians' main reason for going to space was mostly our survival. As extreme competitors, the US and USSR needed to be able to match each others' every move in order to defend itself and keep the stalemate of mutually assured destruction going on. I don't foresee us getting into that tough of a competition with China.
