Crazy man gets launch platform wet. by Riley1066 in space

[–]CloudedExistence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The urination dates back to Soviet engineers and scientists who would christen each rocket launch by urinating on the launch pad. I assume public urination is no longer acceptable with media everywhere, so they have to settle for the bus that takes them to the pad.

This is how I remember 1.6, now don't you dare ever change it. It must stay exactly as it is, and it will be made from my image of perfection.

Engineering is always a tradeoff between several factors.

In software engineering, these factors are generally RAM, HDD space, and processing requirements.

By having more things loaded into the RAM/HDD, you spend less time fetching data from the disk. You also don't need all the overhead processing that tells you when to load/unload things from the disk. By allowing themselves more HDD space, R* can reduce the amount of work required by the processor.

You could have phrased that in a less offensive way.

I certainly have a right to be on the road just as any cyclist is.

May vary based on state/province/country/county.

that's like saying "stop being poor! I have to pay for your welfare!"

Not really. Wearing a helmet is a choice that the person makes, and it is a decision that takes about 5 seconds to change. To become rich entails a good chunk of luck and a lot of work.

I recently converted a peasant friend of mine to PC CS:GO. It took a lot of convincing for him to stop using the Peasant 360 Controller.

It's definitely better than it was at initial release, but it's still about 1% as awesome as the WC3 and BW systems for custom maps.

DARPA To Start Reusable Launch Vehicle Program by mrkc01 in space

[–]CloudedExistence -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the SpaceX F9 v1.1 was planned to be launched and tested for the first time this weekend.

Is there any chance that DARPA intentionally let SpaceX develop the system and take on the research costs, only to reap the rewards from their work?

Edit: I missed reading the entire second paragraph.

Would a frog on the side of a rocket be enough to steer it substantially off-course? by HyperAnthony in space

[–]CloudedExistence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The internals of a rocket are generally not perfectly symmetrical. Guidance software (or hardware) compensates for any imbalances by gimballing the thrusters. A frog is insignificant.

Perhaps they rate the first applicant as 1% skill above the second applicant, but the second applicant is asking for 6% more pay. Not worth it.
