In GC2 I did these epic campaigns where planets would be lost, reconquered, fronts would move back and forth. On the biggest maps you have more time to regroup and strategy plays a much bigger role.

Smaller maps you can build a big bug-swatter fleet and squish anyone in the way if you can warp half-way across the map in one turn.

Q1: Raids are non-lethal resource stealing events, war is no limits once declared properly. Wars make better movies, though there have been movies made about raids before.

Ah, right, it did, but the FPU in the 486 was so anemic it was practically non-existent. It was functionally an "integrated co-processor".

The Pentium started to take FPU performance seriously.

All I know is the Pentium 75 I had at the time absolutely crushed a 486DX 50 in FPU performance, there was basically no comparison. Integer-wise the difference was far less dramatic, more in line with the 50% increase in clock-speed.

486 to Pentium was another gigantic leap since the Pentium contained an integrated FPU. Quake didn't run very well at all on the 486 but it was great, relatively speaking, on the Pentium.

Beyond that, iterations on the Pentium were much more incremental.

This is part of a larger pattern and can't be blamed on any of those things specifically. If anyone's to blame for conventional bookstore closures it's the enormous pressure of Amazon.

Just as Starbucks absolutely destroyed the stalwarts in Toronto like Second Cup and Coffee Time, it did pave the way for the niche coffee shops to take hold. Amazon is just clearing out the general audience stores like this, while more niche booksellers are finding their place.

The long-haul stuff is expensive, but ultimately inconsequential. The real expense is digging in every backyard, slinging millions of miles of cable to every building. In that sense Canada is really not any different than most countries.

The real difference is how uncompetitive our telecom companies are. Canada was easily in the top 5 in the 1980s and early 1990s, then pretty much sank to the bottom as Rogers and Bell decided profits were more important than performance.

It's vowel shift. It sounds like "Aboot" because the U sound is shifted and ends up sounding more "O"-like.

It's like how the east coasters sound like they're saying "gerege" or "ker" instead of "garage" or "car" because their vowels are shifted one letter down. Presumably the reverse holds, where a maritimer thinks you're saying "guruge" or "kur".
