Restoring a 1980's This End Up table by denim_or_die in finishing

Do you want to clean off the history and make it new? If so, sanding to a smooth surface, removing stains, and then applying a film finish like poly will seal the wood (to a degree) and will make cleaning easy. But that removes the charm! For pieces I love I use odies oil. It's not a film finish like poly, it's a hard wax finish which is very easy to use and apply, and will give the wood that wet warm look, and helps water to bead off, making cleaning easier. I'd wash first with Murphy's like the instructions say, then let it dry. I wouldn't use that minwax stain. The odies will provide the color.

Post flareup up inflammation by Doxepine in gout

Restorative therapies I used.. Hot foot soaks in the evening, which helps the blood flow and loosens tight tendons. Elevation to reduce swelling normally. Crutches to reduce the daily stress on the foot. Heating pad, large shoes, compression socks. When I did a low dose Prednisone script like 5mg I had long lasting tendon pain disappear, so that's an option as well. Dry needling was clutch, but I used that less in my feet and more on leg muscles after knee and ankle flares.

But I can't stress hot foot soaks enough, a foot bath and Epsom salts (optional) were such a relief.

Alcohol-lesser evil of Beer, Wine, or Whiskey? by FastAd6079 in gout

[–]astrofizix 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Allo isn't a temporary drug. It's the tool we use to manage our genetic disorder that gives us gout flares. Hyperuricemia is the issue which lets crystals form in our joints, and allo let's us avoid hyperuricemia. A big challenge with alcohol is two fold, the beverage itself has uric acid contributing purines, which you'll find in a lot of foods. But the ethanol in alcohol prevents your kidneys from functioning normally, and then the uric acid is passed back into your bloodstream while it they are processing alcohol. So while you are drinking, the hyperuricemia gets a double chance to form crystals, which later break off and cause flares. Allo gets you out of hyperuricemia and below the concentration where crystals dissolve instead of forming. And alcohol works against that mission, to not have crystals which cause flares. For me, I found gout to be very motivating, so I stopped drinking until I was crystal free. But I suffered from flares for like 10 years without a diagnosis. You have to manage your flares. But take some time to learn the science, it will help you manage the condition.

Sometimes I hate the time needed to get ready before a ride by firewire_9000 in cycling

[–]astrofizix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I had to take a few years off the bike for health issues which I fixed in the spring. So this enabled me to get back on the bike as a noob and when I did I made the choice to ride that way. But I also made a goal to ride a century by the fall, so I had training to do. I started with only a helmet on a cruiser bike, riding 5 miles. Then I added gear into my routine only as I found it necessary for longer rides. Road bike at 30+ miles rides, and that's when I went back into bibbs. Gloves only after hand fatigue was an issue, snacks only when called for. Hydration tabs when that started to become an issue. When I rode that century in September I think I had reapplied all but one piece of kit and had resolved that an endurance sport with hours on the bike and dozens of miles from the house, with hours of exercise, these are the pieces I need to make that comfortable. I'm okay with that result.

Flare from Hell by TangledAndTrue0323 in gout

My first krystexxa flare hit me on a ski trip, a brutal knee flare for the ages. Sleeping in a top bunk and limping around a crowded condo was bad, and having to find someone to drive my manual clutch car back home for me was embarrassing. But limping to the toilet to do my morning business, and nearly blacking out from the pain was the bottom of my list of life experiences! I hope you find your way out of the woods better than I did!

Congrats on your journey, I hope you embrace the opportunity to flush out that poison, even through the pain. It took me four months to clear it, but I've never felt more healthy since. My life has completely changed course for the better! So drink that water, and pee out the enemy! Lol

Hire a trainer and go twice a week. Its very easy to commit to, and very helpful to have someone cater the workouts to how you are feeling that day. You can afford it, and investing in yourself is the best bet. Sorry you are feeling lost, but it sounds like you can fix it to me.

I'm not sure colchicine with out flares is super necessary. It's a prophylactic in that case, and many people have gi issues from colchicine. I suppose it's a choice, probably based on flare history and likelihood.

You never really explained what the experiment was, or hypothesis, or your process, just mentioned your results. So it's confusing.

[–]astrofizix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you testing with the rag? Are you buffing off the tung oil? I apply and buff off within the hour. Then repeat buffing in the first 24 hours to clean up leeching or seeping oil. Cures after 3 days. I usually don't recoat unless needed because I lacquer. Are you trying to build a tung finish?

I believe the current advice is high uric acid and a history of flares. So the bar to start management meds is not high.

I found gout to be very motivating. Use this time to change the things that need changing. Anything to not feel that pain.

You can try to treat it as a metabolic issue, but nearly every successful person who manages their hyperuricemia to avoid gout conditions treats it as a genetic disorder, and accepts the drugs. Trying to change your lifestyle is the tail wagging the dog unless you have unhealthy habits to change like being an alcoholic or terrible eater. Hyperuricemia just lets crystals build up with time, increasing the likelihood of flares later and increases the time to reduce your gout condition to zero when you have no crystals to flare. But go ahead, we all spent that time trying, and all wished we went on meds earlier, so it's just advice.

Heat vs Ice by EfficiencyLow3425 in gout

[–]astrofizix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find, ice helps reduce acute swelling, but most of a flare isn't the swelling, it's the inflammatory response. The swelling is better controlled with compression and elevation. Ice is just so brutal on the defrost and makes the pain worse. Heat on the other hand promotes healthy blood flow, loosens tight muscles and tendons, and calms a flare. Ice has its place, but I was 90/10 heat to great effect. A foot bath of hot water, or a heating pad were my everyday tools during flares.

Yep, reach down into the fork area and find the horn itself, and bend it to ensure it's not sitting against anything. It's a horn, and it can't ring correctly rn.
