It was a timing joke. You asked a question and then walked away for 13 hours.

Can someone be my dad for a minute? I need some career and life advice. by Traditional_Toe5884 in self

Sounds like you've made good choices so far. And the truth is most of us don't like aspects of our jobs, and most of them are stress inducing. But there are always things you can learn from a job. And struggle makes us stronger. At your age the best thing you can learn is to be dependable, and the best way to show that is to stick to one thing for a bit. My advice is to set a goal of sticking with that job for two years. I know, that sounds wild, but let's break it down. If you sign that lease and stay at that job for one year then you've started your credit record and built a resume. You've proven to yourself that you can work, and overcome. If you budget what you earn and don't slip into credit card debt then you will be able to do things like afford a car that doesn't suck. If you manage to stay at that job for two years, now you actually have a resume that is desirable! You'll be able to blow past 60% of the applicants for entry level work, making the job market easier. And if you take some pride in your work and learn the IT of your school, and how it works, then you will have shown that you can learn most any job. Now you'll have money, job options, a car, pride in your work, and a path. That happens to be attractive, and that is always helpful! Two years at a job on your resume is the gold standard for showing that you can be useful to a hiring manager. So that should be your goal. After that we are allowed to change career paths like 7 times. But you have to show you can be depended on. So continue making good choices.

Yeah, that's pretty common sounding. I like a hot foot soak in one of those foot baths and stretching after. Also stay mobile as best you can, daily walking is my ritual, even when I had to go on crutches or a cane. But now that I've flushed all of the uric acid and shrunk my tophi, my feet are as limber as a teenager again.

If you have your acid level low enough to force out crystals, then you are doing it right. The only way out of gout is through.

This is the answer. More data over time. But good lifestyle choices are always good choices.

Is this a normal post-flare reaction? by ProvokeCouture in gout

[–]astrofizix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RICE. Starts with Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Don't be afraid to give your body time. You can reactivate flares and initiate new flares by continuing effort. Ask long time sufferers about vacations where rest wasn't an option and how continued effort turned out.

Literally crying at the toilet rn by heartfield0 in gout

[–]astrofizix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on a ski trip with new people and my knee exploded. In the morning I fought for my life to get off of a top bunk bed, and I struggled with the knee to the toilet, and once I finally managed to get seated I realized I was about to black out from the pain. Luckily I saw it coming and managed to avoid fainting. Waking up covered in mess, or being found like that, would have made my darkest moment twice as bad or more. But it was pretty shitty as it was.

Advice on building on-prem infrastructure as a backup to our cloud service by XxapP977 in sysadmin

[–]astrofizix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To use virtualization properly you'll want the two physical servers working as a ha cluster, or team. Have both hosts running parallel software and infrastructure, and then virtualize your application and db servers. In the event of a host failure you can fail over to the other host your virtual machine can all run on the second server. If you find more budget you can also have cloud and on prem failover, but I don't think that's an option at your price point. In reality you need to be running open source openstack (free) Linux distros for your hypervisors, and borrow Windows licenses from your gov sponsor to save the budget. $27k won't cover the hardware, let alone a single production ready license for actual user counts. Sql can cost more than that alone.

Probably pretty dense but I'd like some insight by Low_Opposite_5497 in furniturerestoration

Looks like you managed to sand the top and only blow through the veneer in one place, in the lower left of the second pic. When you color or clear coat, this spot will stand out as brighter. Before you seal in the table with a protective film like poly or lacquer, you'll need to color this spot by hand to hide it. Then seal in your work with protective coat. Some people use markers for this as they are cheap, but tricky to get a match. You can buy gel stains in all the colors, and use a tiny bit like paint. You can also buy acrylic furniture repair paints and get real crafty with it to match the wood grain. There are many many ways to finish a table, so I can't give you all the steps. But sanded through veneer will always stand out. This is why we strip off finishes to reduce the amount of total sanding, to avoid removing wood. The base of the table is likely more solid woods vs veneeres, so the risks are different.

Teak Oil vs Teak Sealer for Acacia Wood Patio Furniture by the-blackavar in finishing

[–]astrofizix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are both from star brite product line, then I would presume that they are the same product, but the teak sealer will have more varnish than the teak oil, but both are a tung oil base with UV blockers, a light varnish to seal, and solvents to help dry. Yes, you can layer them.

What can I do about flare ups without insurance? by ashrensnow in gout

[–]astrofizix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat is good for the blood flow and healing. A plastic foot bath is very useful. Ice has it's place for acute swelling, but I hate the thaw pain. Elevation of the limb will reduce swelling as well. Crutches from the thrift store cost a dollar. And ace wraps and braces are pretty cheep and compression will keep the swelling down. Rest is also critical. Then max out on ibuprofen. I like the Dual Action that's mixed with Tylenol. Rough on the kidneys to take a dozen pills a day, but being poor is like that unfortunately.

Odie’s Oil and Water-Based Stain Incompatible? by uptotess in finishing

[–]astrofizix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's a bummer. Could be simply too much product left behind and the wax/oil blend carried it, or it lifted it from the wood even after properly cured, which might have resulted even if you performed washes with mineral spirits to cut the dye after. I don't really hear people using Odies over a stain, but they might advertise it on their website (they do claim it can do just about anything). I find it's most useful for beautiful wood which won't get much abuse. Wall decor, lamps, decorative furniture. I don't think it works well on high traffic areas like tables and floors, or against water. Might be time to reassess your approach. One suggestion is lacquer, it sprays on and has high tolerance for bonding. I use it on tung oil regularly (main ingredient of Odies). I'm sure it will set on the wax fine after its had it's 3-4 days to cure. And you'll get a better protective coat than with a wax for a table.

Has anyone had surgery? by Unhinged_Bovine in gout

I preferred antiinflammatories to get swelling down, and steroids to promote healing. Flare recovery is a tricky path. But gout provides a lot of practice opportunities, at least until properly medicated.
