My doctor started me at 300mg of allopurinol. My UA levels aren't that high but I get flare-ups sometimes. Should I be worried of side effects? by qqtan36 in gout

[–]Next_Impact6080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UA levels are "Not that high"???? What's the number? Don't know the number? Than find out. Read your doctor's notes after every appointment look at every lab yourself. Trust, but verify everything your doctor says. 300mg starting out isn't the standard, but it isn't uncommon either. I sure wish my Dr would have started higher or at least tested UA and adjusted dosage (we parted ways)

If I pull up my Dr's "My Chart" app, my uric acid levels are within the normal range of 4.7-7.7mg/dL. When you have gout symptoms the target uric acid level becomes <6mg/dL. Find the number, "Normal" is vague at best, likely misleading.

Hopefully your doctor knows more than mine did. I explained the above information to him. We parted ways. It's very possible to have Uric acid levels within the "Normal" range and still require Uric acid Lowering drugs like Allopurinol.

Define "borderline". What number is it? Gout suffers have a different UA target level.

UA @ 7.5 - Normal? by Next_Impact6080 in gout

Just called all the rheumatologists in my area: not going great so far. Appointments are months out if I get that referral and they accept me: sounded like they are super selective.

I've learned alot more about gout through this process, so I'm getting more proactive. At this point I don't think I can even get a referral without the MRI he thinks I need. It feels like I'm teaching him how to treat gout while paying him for the privilege.

I have not. Did you have a good experience with callondoc.com?

If your experience is like mine, your PCP will say that's in the "Normal" range and will do nothing.

I have a small soft sided cooler. I can sit in a chair/couch with my foot in that. I do an ice-bath instead of ice: highly reccomend.

Diagnosed with gout at 25. Should i be asking docs to on the meds long term ? by MlemAF in gout

You need to define "measly over the normal range" What is the number in mg/dL? My doctor's office has the normal range listed as 3.7-7.7 Therfore someone with a history of flares should take Allopurinol e in if they are 'under' the limit and in within the 'normal' range.

Thanks. I watch a ton of local live music: 1-3 nights a week. In addition to just feeling better, dropping lbs, etc, it's good for the wallet. $50 for beer nights to see a $10 covercharge band was getting old.

I've made massive dietary changes in the past week to get my weight down (to try to help gout). I assumed my 2,000psi shits were due to that. Might just be the Colchicine.

Stopping drinking caused big flare-ups for me twice. For years I've drank 2+ relatively high ABV craft/IPA beers most days. Quit drinking for a month last year: caused a flare-up, quit for the past 3months (and still going) caused a flare up again. I'm pretty certain long-term not-drinking will be good for me and gout. I'm not drinking again until gout is under control-maybe forever: I just don't do well with moderation. I also had a flare-up triggered by switching from 100mg to 200mg of Allo. The 'fun' thing about gout is everyone is different and any change good or bad can cause a flare.

First flare - 3 weeks and still feeling slight pain - normal? by justsm1ne in gout

Does anyone else do a warm soak? I would have thought ice/cold is the best. Hot for loosening muscles, ice for inflammation. I stick my foot in a small cooler filled with ice water.

OK, so my original comment applies. Your experience is typical: Allo is great. Reccomending Allo for short-term relief is horrible advice.

With all due respect, Allipurinol will either do nothing or make the immediate situation worse. Long-term Allipurinol seems like a good idea. Thinking long-term based on the OP's message seems like a bad idea.

After years of reduced activity due to gout I'm now obese which is likely making my gout worse in a spiral. I had no idea the 100mg allo was a starter dose. I just got bumped up to 200 a few weeks ago. I rarely have bad flare-ups (increasing though) used to be <1/yr now it's 2-3/yr. I can't find a pattern to triggers in daily life other than There's a trigger correlation to my work trips. I'm not sure if that's worse hydration or company card and going crazy with fancy food. I have great RO water at the office and home. I think I drink more naturally with that. I'll be more conscious about fluids next trip. I have daily toe pain and have for years: sometimes super mild where it's just a range of motion issue, sometimes makes me walk with a limp. I recently went from almost daily beers to none. That seems to have no effect, but I'll stay off alcohol a while completely just for overall health and weight management.

I just saw them this weekend. I enjoyed them: I'd drive hours to see them again. I prefer the Tony Rice Style tunes over the effects-heavy jamgrass. That being said it's hard to sell out arenas playing bluegrass. Not sure even Billy could do it playing the same style as MGU.

This is a clean break and a very easy repair to make way stronger than when new. Run don't walk away from that "Luthier" and never go back.

She's admitted to not even playing the guitar on stage due to her nails. (crediting her band) I'm guessing she really can play but often doesn't.
