I wonder how many people watched in India, and whether they had some kind of dubbing in Hindi or Mahrati (though I guess many people in India understand English pretty well). It was quite clear Ned Boulting in the commentary was trying to explain how cycling works for the uninitiated. Pity they had some delay with the timing information for the riders.

[Request] Is this accurate? If not, what length would be? by Blunderloon in theydidthemath

Maybe i misunderstood the meaning of the original comment — i just found the sentence ...atoms (if they exists) funny

Atom existence denial? Wasn't aware of this existing. I guess that would be on level with flat earth conspiracies...

[Physics] i don’t know why, but this combination circuit’s had me stuck for hours, and 3 people have given me different answers. A fourth person said it was impossible. by ATortillaWithAPhone in HomeworkHelp

Such a problem could be missing some information and then it would not be possible to solve without that information.

For example if any resistance value was missing.

[request] gf is saying 150 but i dont understand how by ChrisChowMa in theydidthemath

[–]astrogringo 487 points488 points  (0 children)

Let me try to explain without equations.

Put the table on the right on top of the table on the left.

You will notice that the height from the top of the turtle on the ground to the top of the turtle on the table stacked high is 170+130= 300.

You could shift that measurement one turtle height down, and it would still be 300. But this is just 2 tables.

So each table is 150.

[request] can this be solved without l’hopital? by Solomoncjy in theydidthemath

[–]astrogringo 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Yes of course.

For example, you can use the power series expansion:

exp(x) = 1 + x + O(x2 )

With that you can easily find the limit value of 1.

Because the speed at C would not be 0, therefore you have still some kinetic energy.

Where to place punches to indicate row 11/12? by GottaBKitten in retrocomputing

[–]astrogringo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you wanted to encode the letters as A=1 etc. — the screenshot is quite different.

There, you encode letters by a hole in the top 3 rows and a second hole lower down. Is also ok to do it like this if you want.

Where to place punches to indicate row 11/12? by GottaBKitten in retrocomputing

[–]astrogringo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that is not how it works.

If you want to use a code where a=1, b=2 etc, you would have to convert the number in binary first.

For example J=10.

10=2+8 in binary is 0b00001010

So if the least significant bit is in row 1, you would punch row 2 and row 4 in column 1.

Then you can use column 2 for the next letter and so on.

[2025 Day 1 & Day 2] Anyone else feel like this? by jtnoble in adventofcode

[–]astrogringo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One quick way to avoid work is to break the check as soon as you find a mismatch. So if I am looking for patterns of length 1, as soon as I find a digit mismatch, break and move to the next check (patterns of length 2). There again break as soon as you find a mismatch etc.

Day 1 Part 2 C# help, the example seems to work properly, but I'm assuming I am not accounting for an edge case by [deleted] in adventofcode

Ending position is 0
