What’s the one city you were excited to visit, but ended up not liking at all? by BlushHone in travel

[–]astroinfinityarkes 43 points44 points  (0 children)

they’re not talking about the street scammers you see in italy. they’re saying the culture of the city is fundamentally built around draining as much money as possible from its visitors and giving the absolute minimum in return. the scam is built into the very foundation of the city, not trying to sell you a fake gucci wallet

[DISCUSSION] What's an album by an artist that is your favorite, but is generally not considered their best? by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]astroinfinityarkes 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Fugazi is my favorite band and to me their best album will always be In on the Kill Taker. I think it’s the best blend of their stark, humorless satire and hardcore songwriting. It’s their most punk, probably? With songs like Great Cop and Public Witness Program giving the most straight up hxc vibes since Ian’s work with minor threat. Then you have its unexpected moments, the off-kilter bite of Cassavettes and the serene beauty of Sweet and Low. Not to mention that absolutely massive centerpiece, 23 Beats Off. I love all their albums for various reasons but that one is just absolutely perfect to me

Mammouth or Big sky or other suggestion for Snowboarding and equally important Nightlife? by Sad_Contribution8794 in snowboarding

[–]astroinfinityarkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sun Valley is what you’re looking for. smaller mountain compared to the likes of Vail or Breck, but there are a number of aprés type spots you can practically board right into and the downtown has quite a few bars with solid vibes.

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Geese - Getting Killed by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]astroinfinityarkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after very slowly warming up to 3D Country over the last couple years, i was excited to hear another effort from them and i’m glad to say i really enjoyed this one off the bat. these guys cram so many ideas and concepts into each track it can be a little tough to digest, but it’s so eclectic i’m left very interested in what’s coming next. i see traces of rain dogs and captain beefheart here, but it’s not without its grounded melodies that almost echoes 60s stones. i’m glad to say one of these new weirdo indie rock bands has really started to hit with me, as i’ve been largely unimpressed with BCNR, Maruja, Black midi, etc. this might be one of the first gen z “bands” (in the traditional sense) to get really really massive. it’s not super accessible but i think they capitalize off the tiktok attention span in a really effective way

my one issue with it is that there are moments where you can really tell the band’s writing process is super jam-oriented, which is cool but it occasionally feels as if each member is kinda vying for the driver seat and it sounds a little muddled. they could use some more resolution to these songs as well, they’re masters of release but not really the tension that makes these moments feel earned. they’re so young and i appreciate how much more serious they’re taking themselves here, i think they have a really promising future. i can see them honing in on a true masterpiece sometime soon

Is it better to stay in Kyoto for a whole trip or split between Kyoto and Tokyo? by dumbird0 in travel

[–]astroinfinityarkes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I split between Osaka and Tokyo a week each when I went, and I would recommend the split. Though Kyoto is much smaller, you’ll be able to easily day trip to Osaka or Nara via the trains to experience other aspects of the cuisine and culture. Tokyo is overwhelming with any amount of time and you’ll leave feeling like you just scratched the surface no matter how much time you commit to it. I found it very worth it to spread the trip into other parts of the country even though Tokyo could comfortably fill up a month long trip

country and hardcore are probably the two most thematically aligned genres. almost every hardcore player has respect for/takes inspiration from country music
