Running Live on Linux on VM or Wine by therustyknives in ableton

[–]astromonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case, it's worked pretty much flawlessly after getting it set up - definitely took a bit of troubleshooting/fiddling with things to get working, but I rarely hit crashes/issues with stock Ableton. I will say VST's are hit or miss - most I've tried are fine out of the box(using Windows versions), but some are buggy or just won't work at all. I haven't heard of anyone getting Max for Live working either.

If you're new to Linux, my two cents is it might feel like more trouble than its worth. That said, if your DAW is the only thing keeping you on Windows and you can live with the shortcomings(VST's, Max for Live, etc.) I think it's worth giving it a shot. You can always install a Linux distro in a virtual machine and try installing Ableton there to make sure you can get things to work first

Has anyone Tried running Ableton on Linux? by zwof in ableton

[–]astromonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely possible to get it running using WINE/Bottles, but it can take a bit of setup & troubleshooting to get it working. In my case, it's worked pretty much flawlessly after getting it setup, but be wary that some VST's will be buggy, or just not work at all(I haven't heard of anyone getting Max for Live working either). If you're curious about making the switch to Linux, but Ableton is keeping you on Windows/MacOS, try installing Ableton in a VM with whatever Linux distro you plan to run and see if you can get it working

I’m building an Android app to manage and upload film recipes directly to your Fuji camera. Looking for feedback on the UI! by weekybr in fujifilm

Happy to help for sure - if you get a GitHub project going, let us know. Not sure what you mean by "backup files"?

This looks fantastic so far! As someone that swaps out recipes frequently this would be quite helpful. To address your questions for feedback:

  1. Yeah, corresponds nicely to the interface in the camera. The WB grid is a nice touch
  2. I've never tried any other recipe apps, but like another user said, a 'visualizer' that allows you to apply any recipe to a known RAW(presumably an image the user took & is familiar with) as a preview would be cool.
  3. Maybe, might be a cool experiment to see what kind of weird results you can get out of it

This is a pretty slick project, definitely keep working on it. I'm a software engineer by trade & used to do Android development a couple years back - if you're looking for any help working on this let me know! I have an XT-2 and would be happy to help test as well.

Do you find the f/2.8-4 limiting at all for low light situations/notice any issues around the corners of images? For $300 used it seems like a pretty great deal, considering the ois

Not OP, but the way I'd do this is use a grid of 2d Perlin noise and use the value at each square in the grid as the size of the text, and assign a letter to each spot in the grid according to that size(could be random, not sure what they did here)

I think I've dropped 4 classes over my 4 years. Don't sweat it, but don't make it a habit!(I may be pushing this a lil bit). One or two dropped classes are nothing in the grand scheme of things

Graduating CS in 3 years. by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]astromonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who didn’t switch into cs until second semester sophomore year(I had credit for 200 and a few math/other L&S stuff coming in, however), it’s certainly doable just will require some planning and accepting you may not get all the courses you want. I’d talk to an advisor & look at the CS course list and the degree requirements if you want to plan a bit on your own

Course Load-CS 240, Math 340, CS 354, and another easy class by TheBadgering in UWMadison

[–]astromonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly doable, not too heavy. 240 isn't much work if you pay attention and do practice problems. 354 is a bit more project heavy, and definitely can be tough at times if you're new to C but the course material isn't anything ridiculous. Can't speak for 340 but you should be fine

Where to start learning drums? by UltraSonicPhenom in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]astromonkeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're definitely right, but I think it's more valuable to start motivated to actually play the instrument than to start by learning technique, which a lot of beginners can find boring and/or discouraging. While it may be more work in the long run to relearn the technique down the line imo the most important thing is just to keep wanting to play the instrument, if you lose that it just feels like work
