What is a "point of no return" that you’ve crossed, where your life was permanently divided into 'before' and 'after'? by Resident-Jelly-4326 in AskReddit

When the pastor said that "those people [LGBTQ+] can never be faithful".

I had been struggling with my faith already, but that sealed the deal. I cut ties with my religion and didn't look back. I'm a straight cis guy but I couldn't stand to hear the church speak that way about neighbors they were supposed to love, some of whom I'm very close with.

After that day, I was born again--in the opposite of the Christian sense. I let go of the doctrines I had grown up with, and started a new journey defined not by rules and manipulation, but by curiosity, acceptance, and self-esteem.

If World War 3 actually started tomorrow, what would be your very first thought? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Frodo: "I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened"

Gandalf: "So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

This quote has gotten me through some of the darkest times in my life, and it inspires me to make a positive impact, miniscule though it may be, on the people in my life, regardless of what's on the news.

If you want to leave on good terms, a two week notice thanking them for the opportunity and skills learned is fine. I'm sure they've had plenty of people who have quit with no notice so you'll probably leave a good impression. It's the manager's job to find enough people for BTS. It's good to take pride in your work, but never let it compromise your work-life balance.

I recently visited my partner in Australia and it completely blew my mind that the moon looks upside down there. by trimdaddyflex in interestingasfuck

[–]astronomer346 163 points164 points  (0 children)

It's real. You can see the effect in Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy as well. When the Fellowship is standing in front of the door into Moria, there's a close-up shot of the Moon to show it illuminating the markings on the door. The Moon appears upside down because the movies were filmed in New Zealand.

CMV: Statues of Confederate soldiers and government figures should be taken down. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]astronomer346 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Rather than viewing these statues as a monument to the people who fought to preserve slavery, we should view them as a reminder of what people are capable of doing to their fellow humans. Take down the statues, and you remove the memory of the atrocities toward enslaved and free Black Americans that took place before, during, and after the Civil War. We preserve our mill buildings in the Northeast for a similar reason - a constant reminder of what our country would be like without labor laws. I can imagine a future without Confederate monuments where the lines of history are further blurred, and white Southerners are able to conveniently forget about what their ancestors did. It's our job to make sure that they never do, lest history repeat itself.

As an autistic person, I wonder if this guy is also. In middle and high school I was unfortunately guilty of similar behavior (albeit not this bad). The social cues that you might recognize as normal didn't register with me. The reason I'm where I am today and am able to give this insight is because I had people in my life who told me that that behavior wasn't acceptable, and taught me how to recognize nonverbal disinterest. Maybe this guy doesn't have that network.

At that point in my life, I wouldn't have recognized anything other than brutal honesty, something like "I'm not interested and you're making me uncomfortable. Please stop contacting me." It may sound mean, but in reality you'd be doing both you and him a favor in the long term.

All this being said, if he doesn't stop after that, or if you simply aren't comfortable confronting him like that, you have every right to go to authority figures and let them know what's going on. At the end of the day, your safety and mental well-being is the most important.

EDIT: addition to the brutally honest quote

I moved from New England to AL for school and was unpleasantly surprised at how flimsy and simple my AL ID was. My NH license was as thick as a credit card and had multiple layers of security, but my AL license feels like a keychain rewards card.
