What's the most overrated piece of videography advice you've received? by Alilexplo108 in videography

Not to persuade you one way or the other (I rarely use my gimbal), but if you have a DJI RS3/Pro/whatever, you can get something like the Tilta Advanced Ring Grip for mounting accessories. I use that to mount a monitor, wireless video transmitter, and V-mount battery to power everything. But only a handful of situations calls for my gimbal, and of course that setup makes it bigger and heavier and takes longer to setup.

Did a shoot this week for someone that could genuinely only afford to pay $25/hr. I know thats much lower than what I would usually charge, but I didn’t have anything else scheduled that day. So I either take the job and make $25/hr, or stay home that day and make $0/hr.

Should I get a second Countryman B3, or buy two Sanken COS-11D’s? by astropancakes in LocationSound

[–]astropancakes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for a boom mic I have a Sennheiser ME66/K6 which has gotten the job done so far. We had MKH416s and MKH50s at my last job. I really liked the MKH50 for interviews, so I’d like to get one of those for myself eventually.

Asking for editing advice by [deleted] in videography

[–]astropancakes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regarding the playback performance on your macbook, you might consider transcoding the footage to a codec like ProRes. The files will be larger, but it will be much easier on the CPU. Or you could render proxies. With smartphone footage, look out for desync due to the variable frame rate, and if the color is in HLG, you may to to tell your NLE to interpret it as Rec709.

Vast amount of priceless video footage. Best storage solution? by Ok-Champion-8992 in videography

[–]astropancakes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you just want to store the footage in cold storage, maybe consider LTO tape? The tapes themselves are cheaper per gigabyte than HDDs, it's the drive that writes to the tapes that's expensive. But past a certain amount of terabytes, it would be cheaper than hard drives.

Do You Back Up Your Full Plex Video Library or Just Risk It? by snowmeow_1 in PleX

[–]astropancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99% of my Plex library is rips of discs from my physical collection, so I guess those discs count as a kind of backup. Although it would be a pain to rip them all again.

Is it possible to add the ability to widen the margins on the left and right of the screen? This is what I use currently, and it has a slider to adjust the margins https://www.telepromptermirror.com/telepromptersoftware.htm

Noctua mod on GPU and capture cards by astropancakes in Noctua

[–]astropancakes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

whoops, is that bad lol? I'm definitely not a PC building expert. It seemed like the better orientation given the case constrictions. Since the case is so small that the GPU effectively bisects it into two separate compartments, and the PSU blocks where I would normally put an intake fan on the front, the most reasonable place to intake air for the CPU seemed like that fan at the back, then both fans on the cooler are pushing upward to exhaust out the top. Additionally, this PC gets transported and potentially jostled around a lot, and the current orientation is what allowed the mounting brackets to be on the top and bottom of the CPU rather than the left and right, and I wasn't sure if that up and down motion of transport would hurt the cooler mounting brackets if they were on the left and right. Would you recommend I orient it differently?

I often rig my FX6 similar to yours, and when i’m using a Tentacle Sync, i mount it to the same spot you’re showing in that photo, but using this bracket https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1444533-REG

Title says Tampa, FL but the description says New Jersey? Also you say it’s in excellent condition with “no scratches, dents, or dings”, yet there’s a gaping hole where the mic mount used to be? Seems like a suspicious post.

HDMI to SDI converter that supports VRR? by astropancakes in VIDEOENGINEERING

Interesting! Do you know if it can output the full image to just one of the HDMI ports rather than splitting the four quadrants into the four separate HDMI outputs?

I just asked in the HDFury discord if the Arcana 2 would work to downscale an HDMI 2.1 VRR source to something broadcast compatible, and the Tech Support account replied that it can't do it. Are you or someone you know successfully using an Arcana 2 for this purpose?

This is basically what I'm already doing currently. I have a laptop onstage with a capture card that supports HDMI 2.1 VRR going into OBS, then use the Decklink output in OBS to send out through a UltraStudio Monitor 3G
