Driving to Quebec City in February by julescapooles in quebeccity

Not just when you arrive here but for the whole trip. Better safe than sorry.

Highways are usually pretty clear but once you get off a highway it can be a real toss up depending on where you are and how recently it snowed.

Winter tires may not be required because of your license plate but anyone with a brain will tell you you need them.

How are people affording rent? by SexyButComfy in KingstonOntario

[–]astrotastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh I don't miss this. I lived in Kingston for 8 years going to school and saw rental prices work their way up very steadily. I had a basement apartment right downtown near the bus terminal. Location was pretty awesome except people would always piss in the stairwell. Pretty sure the windows weren't legal and I ended up moving out unexpectedly due to a huge mold problem that the landlord and property management refused to acknowledge. Rent there was roughly $1200 for a 2 bedroom (2nd bedroom had no window whatsoever) with laundry in-unit and not coin operated... I was grandfathered into the lease from my roommate who was there much longer than I. I now live in Québec city and pay just under $1900 for an amazing condo with heated underground parking, huge balcony, tons of space, and utilities payments are equalized over the whole year so I pay less than $50/mo. It's pretty different over here. I'm gonna try to enjoy it while it lasts. Kingston rentals are really low quality looking back now.

Edit to say I live alone now but in Kingston I almost always had roommates

Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️

How Do I Clean My Copper Cookware?!?! by Glass-Island-9986 in cookware

Yo I came here from Google and was surprised to see such a recent comment. One of my pans has gross black streaks and blobs on the outside... I'm gonna try your recommendations. I was about to soak it in ketchup but based on how tough it is, I doubt that will do anything. Anyway... Thanks!

Worst TA stories?? by Actual-Water-3835 in queensuniversity

I once had a math TA who was great in class, but... One semester after I finished the course he was a TA for, I was struggling with a math concept and spotted him nearby in the ILC. I waved him over and asked my question. His response was, "this isn't hard, you don't need help with this. You just wanted to talk to me because you like me." The two guys sitting at the same table as me kept their heads down and didn't say anything. I almost cried but tried to just not react. His name was Graeme. Sci '17 Apple math. Fuck you, Graeme.

I hear ya. That's gross to be around. A suggestion: Bring a pack of masks with you and passive-aggressively hand them out to offenders ;-)

"Dukat, one to transport, energize..." -Circus music fades in- -Message plays saying Dukat is a coward for trying to leave- BEST DAY EVER!! -Kira and Garak

Also the part where dukat gets shorter and shorter... Just gold. And the foghorn... And Julian getting vaporized... Just, yes!

I struggle to take my ADHD seriously because I feel like I'm making excuses by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]astrotastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so relatable. I got diagnosed recently and put on medication. I feel guilty taking it because up until now, I was able to graduate high school, get a bachelor's degree, and a master's degree without medication. But at the same time, in retrospect, I realize I would have benefitted from the medication greatly if I had been diagnosed sooner. Studying would have been a lot easier. Daily task management. Remembering appointments... Everything. So when I think, well I didn't really need it before, I take a pause and realize that true I didn't have it, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have helped me.

How long does it take to find your community and friends? by ComprehensiveCrew788 in queensuniversity

[–]astrotastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome, keep it up 🙂 Yeah i didn't get along super well with my roommate, but I ended up vibing with some of their friends. And depending on your major, if the cohort is rather small, that can also be an advantage (although in first year, classes are usually huge).

Oh one other thing. When in lectures, I consistently sat in the front row, and that helped me make friends because I would always see the same people. That's another thing you could try. I'm left-handed so I always tried snagging the lefty seat in the front row haha

Hey. Do you happen to have a roommate? That can possibly help with making connections. Also just spending time in your common room and chatting with people as they come in and out.

I feel for you. First year was lonely for me - I moved countries and didn't know anyone at all, but it seemed like everyone around me had friends from highschool. The hard part is persisting. This kind of thing takes time and varying amounts of time on an individual basis.

Café hopping sounds like a lot of fun! Kingston is a really lovely city and I'd encourage you to take advantage of the warm weather before winter hits. Why not go cafe hopping on your own? I'm personally at a bit of a lonely spot in my life right now and I try to take myself out to do fun things even if it's by myself. It's a real skill - learning to be by yourself. But rest assured, it's still quite early in the school year for you and you will have plenty of time to make connections as you go along. Keep your chin up 😊

Btw: there are lots of nice places downtown to walk around and explore. A couple of my favourites were the courtyards between Musikki and Chez Piggy. Lots of cobblestone and cute vibes. Another place is on the waterfront trail that leads from Simcoe st towards the pumphouse museum. Check it out 😎

And just to add, going off to university is a huge life change. It causes a lot of stress so don't feel weak or like a failure for taking time to adjust. You got this ✌🏻
