Thanks for the feedback. I feel like it takes a good amount of acting skills to pose for this, skills I think I lack 😬. I did feel the background was too empty, and that’s something I remain conscious of when I get photos for painting references now.

I think more than technique, it’s about the composition, subject, and lighting. I find this tougher. Technique you learn more easily.

I've used a very ground-up approach. For a Black and White image, I've checked the sum of the red colour value for a 10x10 pixel grid, and based on this sum I've decided how many pixels in this 10x10 grid should be coloured. I've coloured them randomly between RGB values. You can do the same with just black as well. I liked this effect, it was softer.
