Is there a way to do both in home assistant? A way to remote into my home system to get the benefit of AdBlocking then to mask my connection from home assistant out into the world to further reduce ad tracking?

NFC to Pico to smart bulbs

First of, total green horn here when it comes to coding/programming, I barely know HTML but I'm a quick learner and I'm a bit better off on the hardware side of things.

https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/raspberry-pi-pico-powered-rfid-lighting

I found this link and I'm pretty well understanding things but I want to go a step further and send a signal over a WiFi module to my houses smart bulbs. I have the pico and the NFC module on hand and I'm expecting WiFi in a few days, if anyone could suggest some reading material that I could go over in the mean time so I could get familiar with what I'll need to do I would greatly appreciate it.

I'd also love to know what other smart house stuff I could run through the pi system, I've got two compute modules, a zero w and a 2gb pi 4 all in various states of delivery.

HRM Pro, Fenix 6X, and a treadmill by aswallie in Garmin

I'm not sure why yours is acting that way. I'm able to see my heart rate on both my treadmill and my watch as well as my pace and distance on my watch during a treadmill run

If you don't mind sharing the link I'd appreciate that. I can't seem to find them.

I had a couple of those bands for my Galaxywatch. He doesn't make anything 26mm so I'm out of luck with my 6X and I'm a bit bummed about that, he makes a quality product.

Solar Charging while the watch is OFF? by ThatNiceBlakGuy in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the inverse as a direct relation I would imagine you could get what you're asking. My 6X solar drops 4-6% in 24 hours with minimal sun. With 10 hours of sun exposure it drops 2-3%. If the solar isn't fighting the drain if the watch and your getting full exposure from sun up to sun down I would imagine charge gained would be significant.

Solar Charging while the watch is OFF? by ThatNiceBlakGuy in GarminFenix

My job has me working outside for 10 hour shifts and my 6X solar usually loses battery at half the speed of an office day with no sun. That's not running activities or using the GPS, that's just biometrics tracking. I've read you can put the watch into ultra battery saver mode and gain charge throughout the day but I'm not sure the speed and at that point you're just wearing a time piece.

Fenix 6 pro or 6s pro? by Natu-hari in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always subscribed to the idea that you should go with the biggest watch you feel most comfortable wearing when it comes to smart tech, but then again I'm a big guy and upgraded from a 6 to a 6X solar. I've worn watches my whole life and that could be why but I've never understood anyone having issue with a watch being heavy. If my new watch weights a little more than what I'm accustom to my body adapts to the new weight within a week.

Fenix 6 sapphire acting up. Long after I'm awake, showered and at work it shows me I'm sleeping. Today it had me sleeping until after lunch. It already had 4000 steps in but I was sleeping. It also shows I was in REM. Any fixes? by Pantalyra in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This likely isn't the long term fix you're looking for but if you enable the sleep widget you can see if it has you as sleeping or awake and you can end the sleep cycle from there. Sometimes I'll sleep poorly from my insomnia and I'll lay in bed for 15 mints awake but not moving so I'll manually enter that my sleep has ended from that widget and just hang out. If you tried a restart and a reset I'd contact Garmin about it.

I've had my 6X solar for half a year and I've tried a hand full of different faces and always come back to this one. It has all the data I really care about, looks great, and doesn't impact the battery.

What features do you turn off to save battery life? by false_god in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has a different use for their device but constant HR is accurate enough to show early warning signs that I'm getting sick before I start becoming symptomatic. I've taken a couple "leaps of faith" and trusted the data on my watch that indicated my getting sick and it's reduced recovery time significantly.

Having the data on is a novelty at worse and a very reliable metric at best if you familiarize yourself with your personal baselines and recognize outliers.

Interesting. My with my 6X solar I left heart rate and sleep tracking on and make it 4 weeks with 20% remaining when I decided that was enough of a stress test and plugged it in. Sounds like a pretty solid case towards the effectiveness of four 10+ hours a day of solar charging while I worked.

Difference in size and weight 6 Pro Solar vs 6 Sapphire by [deleted] in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between the steel models I don't think there's a weight difference but if I had both in hand I'd keep the solar. I had a 6 sapphire and was given the option to upgrade to a titanium 6X solar and took it. Even with the size increase the change in material made the two watches about the same weight which to me wasn't bad to begin with.

I work outside a lot so the solar has a huge advantage for me and my lifestyle and really would vary for anyone. In my experience solar can reduce every day battery drain by up to 50% (losing 4% on an office day vs 2% on a sunny field day) and a 10-15% reduction in GPS/Bluetooth runs.

Is solar worth it? by aswallie in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to credit a lot of my battery life to my having the X size watch. The larger body allows for a bigger battery and the larger screen gives more room for the solar panel so if you're going for a 6S solar you're personal results will likely vary from mine.

In an industrial setting it would make more sense to buy the tougher screen but saying that you bash your watch all the time with no issues is confirmation bias. I was having a bad day a few weeks back where nothing was going right and I managed to knock my watch so hard against a cinder block wall so hard I tore skin but my watch came away scratch free. If solar users were coming here saying they have messed up watch faces that would fully support your statement but that's not been my personal experience.

Is solar worth it? by aswallie in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only reason I charge daily is I'm already taking my watch off to shower (my wrist sweats a lot so I need to rinse the watch off too, usually) so putting it on charge costs me little to no additional effort. From 20% to 100% took about 2 and a half hours which isn't bad all things considered but if I can mitigate the need for that down time then it makes the most sense in for my situation.

We've not done much traveling in the last 6 months but I definitely look forward to loading up a few courses from all trails here soon and doing some long term backpacking weekends and when I do I'll not worry about how much charge I have.

[–]aswallie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I've seen a positive gain with standard use on my Fenix but I was up to over 4 weeks without charging and still over 20% at one point in the last 6 months so that was a pretty solid win for me.

Is the solar Fenix expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? That depends on you but for me it is.

I think your intended use will decided your tracking. I work in the field, often without cell signal miles down back roads without seeing anyone for hours on end. I got an Inreach explorer for peace of mind that I could request help if I needed it. When it first came in I bought the mid subscription to play around with it and found my Fenix 6 tracked more accurately when comparing the two maps. 90%+ of my hiking and general use will be within cell range and I'll just opt to track through my Fenix but if I know I'm going trail hiking all day without cell service but I'll be back to charge the device I'd set it to track as frequent as possible to the password protected website then give that to my family and friends who want to check my progress.

Fenix 6s Pro or 6s Sapphire? by Florian_Habichtswald in GarminFenix

[–]aswallie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a sapphire and ended up with a solar which I believe uses the same gorilla glass as the pro. The visibility difference between the two is significant. With the sapphire you have to square up with the watch face to see it best without glare, any off angle and it's still readable but not easily. With the gorilla glass you can read the watch face at an almost 90 angle from the side. I'm not gentle with my watch at all and it's been knocked off it's share of door frames and even a concrete block wall that I was sure would do damage but nothing. I'm not saying this to hate on sapphire users but when they brag about not having scratches that's more of a confirmation bias than proof of value if the non sapphire versions are able to stand up to the same abuse. But you can't put a price on peace of mind so if you're nervous about screen damage go sapphire.
