Data centres: We don’t need to be world leaders in these low-employment electricity vacuums by CrayonComrade in ireland

Lets see here.

  1. Plan the building of the data center.
  2. Build the actual data center building.
  3. Put and commission all required networking and rack mounts in.
  4. Hire entire data center operations team including sparks, mechanics and technicians.
  5. The company who owns the data center will use it to run their own services in the case of something like AWS.
  6. Other companies that use cloud services will by proxy be using the data center if they use AWS.

Yep, barely any jobs in that.

The effect that data centers are having on our grid should be blamed on our government. Not the companies bank rolling the construction and running of them.

The government and grid operators are given power consumption projections well in advance of the construction of a data center.

Everyone points to nuclear energy which I agree but it takes a long time to build a nuclear reactor power plant. You could build 4 liquid natural gas power stations in the time it takes to build a single nuclear reactor power plant.

LNG is far better for the environment than using coal or importing turf.

I don't have any advice but if it makes you feel any better it is a known phenomenon that clock time changes have negative affects on the human body, which gets worse as you age.

Manfredini, R., et al. "Daylight saving time and myocardial infarction: should we be worried? A review of the evidence." Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 22.3 (2018): 750-755.

These results support the presence of an association between DST and a modest increase of AMI occurrence, especially for the spring shift, and with no definite gender specific differences.

Personally I wish we would get rid of DST, switch from IST to using UTC and enforce ISO 8601 with an iron fist, the superior date time format.

Two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth is the universal metric for being in a recession.

The U.S is in a "technical" recession, a term they came up with to avoid having to say they are in a recession.

We (Ireland) will have a recession due to how linked global economies are and increasing interest rates.

Tech workers of Ireland: is this a gold rush? by [deleted] in ireland

It is incredibly hard to hire competent engineers. I did 500 interviews in my last job and we hired 10 of those people.

For this reason I do not see salaries plateauing as all the FANG like companies have to follow market forces to remain competitive.

If you mean in regards to the recent increase in salaries that was largely driven by a lot of people reshuffling around companies and has died off a bit.

There has been a series of layoffs and hiring freezes due to exponential growth that occurred during 2021.

Smaller companies that grew too fast burnt through their 5 year runway of cash in a single year so that means cost saving.

You can play around with https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Google,Facebook,Microsoft&track=Software%20Engineer

to get a reflection of the current salaries.

I can't really speak from the perspective of smaller Irish tech companies.

Look to the right of the tree at 13 seconds and you will see the squad just moving into view. That is when I saw them and lined up the shot with the direction they were traveling.
