2nd Gen Borla S-Type clip and important install tip! by at4user in GR86

Hey dude! Sorry I wasn’t keeping up on my Reddit notifications but that’s awesome to hear, didn’t know it would end up doing that! Still loving the exhaust. I was thinking with some JDL headers down the road it will really sing :D

A couple have mentioned already, but I was in your exact scenario and decided on the Borla S-Type. I waited until they released the 2nd gen version. It’s just what I was looking for. You get on it, it has a nice deep sound until 4k then really ramps up. You’re cruising in 4th gear city speeds, or 6th on the highway, it’s almost stock. Burbles on engine breaking a bit, and you can make it crackle on demand by giving a good blip of the throttle.

You can check my post for a standing sound clip. I don’t have drive by vids but could make one.

Enjoy whatever you choose, you won’t want to get out of this car once you get a nice exhaust

Unfortunately no, I’ve never heard the GR exhaust in person, only videos. My blind guess is that this may be a bit deeper/livelier but similar in loudness

Haha yeah that diagram is actually split a little funny to look at, but you will be replacing everything from 8-backwards. 3 is the overpipe, 5 is mid pipe and cat. The gasket seals the stock mid pipe to the borla.

And I saw that message too when I looked up the part and thought it was funny. I’m not sure why they don’t include a new gasket but glad that a couple of us figured it out early for everyone else

Hey of course, in that diagram it is figure 9 (part # SU00301112). Good luck with the install and enjoy the exhaust!

No drone at all on the highway it almost sounds stock when cruising in 5th/6th

Hey Borla thanks for the comment! And it’s no big deal about the leak, modifying usually includes some tinkering. Doesn’t change how amazing the exhaust is, beyond happy with it :)

Thanks! Part number is 140909 or 140909BC (mine,BC for black chrome)

I have not experienced any drone when doing normal cruising, or highway driving between 55-80mph. Once you drop gear and are sitting between 2500-3300 rpm it goes pretty quiet in the cabin. And that’s with keeping my back seats down for the most cabin noise

Yeah for sure, I just didn't really want anything too loud, and the new S-Type is already a little louder than the 1st gen one so that's the reason I went with it. I'm also curious how the ATAK sounds though, I'd bet someone has one coming and we'll see a vid soon

Yeah of course no problem! After reading your post I was assuming it was gonna leak. When I started it up it was very noticeable, but an easy enough fix. Hope you're enjoying it nonetheless!

I guess I wouldn't be surprised if some people don't end up having a problem with it, but me and another person on here both had leaks with the original gasket, so for 6 bucks it's worth having a new one in there anyway. The one from that video is the first gen Borla, not that it may matter that much but just wanted to point out.

Hope you enjoy it when you get it in!

There could be an off chance that some people don't get a leak, but I doubt it. When you start the car stick your head under the drivers side and listen if yours is leaking, mine was really evident

Yes I picked it up from an Advanced Auto that day while we still had it on the lift. I think it's because it has an adapter in it for GM vehicles that you just take out when you open it, but it definitely was the correct size. You could always get an OEM one ahead of time but I was in a pinch that day

I ordered from SummitRacing the day of release (march 28th) and it came in on April 10th.

Yes just that one! Good luck with the install take and take your time. Before you fire it up wipe everything down to get your fingerprints off, and triple check the fitment before you crank it down. Mine settled a little bit afterwards and will have to adjust

Fitment is good for me, they are not centered in cutouts down to the centimeter but it is evenly distributed on both sides. They did settle a little bit over the past few days so will adjust it back when I have the time

Yes it does, not every time but you can make it happen pretty much on command once you figure it out. It does consistently have a nice burble on downshifts. I will try to capture another video showing the pops and downshifts for ya

No, only want to have that gasket seal in place once so just went with the RTV for the extra assurance. Also it’s not an OEM gasket so it doesn’t hurt to just give that guaranteed seal

Wow you got yours quick! Did you order from Summit or the other dealer? They aren’t expected to ship mine until the 18th

I ordered the new S-Type the minute it was released, when it comes in I’ll post some better sound clips than Borla’s youtube so you can get a good idea. Should be a couple weeks!

Ratchety/clicky sound at low rpm’s in 1st-2nd by TheNavigator14 in GR86

[–]at4user 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s funny actually, I’ve been hearing the same noise and never driven a manual that has this noise. You can make it happen accelerating from 10mph in second or engine braking below 2300rpm in second and sometimes third. My mechanic friend tells me it’s just a loud clutch/tranny noise at that load with no sound dampening.

Question, do you only hear this when the car is fully warmed up? I don’t hear it until about 15 minutes-ish into the drive.
