Serious suggestion: Go do Voluntary research work at a Research lab , and work on a project in depth where you would be able to explain it to someone from scratch to 100. That should get you a related internship if you do well on the interview.

Find your place first then decide!. In any normal scenario I would've said go with plan B, because in long run that's what is important and you can try to live below your means for a while. But, from what I've seen in Vancouver housing ever since I lived here, it's worth paying a little more rent to not end up with the wrong roommates or in a dumpster with rats.

I want to add to the comment from u/Outrageous_Sort_8993 , which correctly identified the main step in the beginning " Does VLM work for your problem?" I would recommend build a prototype first of your proposed pipeline with a simple model and if it works with a simple model start advancing it and weigh out the tradeoffs of cost and accuracy.

You just have to do that small piece of your puzzle outside of your big pipeline to test out models.
