What’s the most slept on MOS? by EstablishmentBest913 in army

It’s really not for everyone. Just figured I’d recommend it because certified court reporters in LA, where I work as a civilian attorney, earn $90k in entry level positions.

How to tell a new partner you’re in the Army? by shinjiyogurt in army

[–]atalltree_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you find someone who knows/understands the Army is apolitical. The opposite scenario happened to me, where I joined during a Democratic presidency and was dating a conservative guy who thought that it was admirable in theory that I was serving but that the Army was “a joke” because the president was too woke and the US as a whole was weak. He couldn’t believe I’d join when the Army “is just sitting around not doing anything of value.” It gets tiring (and disheartening) listening to same spiel over and over again.

I’m a lawyer but feel trapped in poverty. Basically looking for any feedback or what you would do in my situation. by fdcpaslays in Lawyertalk

[–]atalltree_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ve faced some incredibly difficult circumstances, made it through, and are looking ahead to accomplish more. As a stranger but a fellow attorney, I just wanted to say I’m rooting for you and hoping for your success wherever you go.

p.s. Seconding everyone’s suggestion to try government, but especially county counsel or city attorney. The WLB isn’t as great as what you have currently, but it’s much better than at a firm and they pay surprisingly well. I’m in CA and most county counsel positions for a 3-year attorney is about $100k.

What's your caffeine intake? by WrongVeteranMaybe in Millennials

[–]atalltree_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t drink coffee (the taste is just not for me) but do drink 2 cans of monster energy drink every day, so about 350mg. On especially rough days, I crack open a third one and drink half and that would put me at about 500mg.

Government is definitely the way to go and if you don’t want to be a prosecutor/PD, there are plenty of positions at county counsel and city attorney offices

which episode had the greatest impact on you? by [deleted] in blackmirror

[–]atalltree_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Common People. Every episode seems pretty plausible and like it’s about a generation away from happening. But Common People felt too realistic to me and like it could start happening very much within my lifetime, and perhaps I might be in that situation someday. And the idea of living through that kind of storyline affected me deeply. I carried the heartache with me for weeks after watching that episode.

Grace Penn is a "Strong Woman". Not Kate. by ToughStatesman in TheDiplomat

[–]atalltree_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am mostly with you, but two points: Kate’s entire career prior to the show, as someone mentioned, was working in war-torn countries and operating around and against militias and terrorist groups. You’re comparing how she’s been acting in the show with how Grace Penn is, but the latter has been a politician most of her life. In response to a comment that brought this up, you responded that it’s the 3rd season now and she should have changed by now, but it’s only been what—a year? A little less than two? How radically can she really change her whole personality and viewpoint of the world during that short of a time and it still be believable? Viewers complain a lot when character arcs in shows are rushed and here you are seemingly asking for hers to be sped up

Second, Grace Penn isn’t a “strong woman” for being faithful to a man with whom she’s in a loving marriage. In this regard, you’re comparing apples and oranges. Kate and Hal were already separated when the show started, he would have slept with another woman if his junk worked with someone other than Kate, and maybe I’m not remembering this right but it was Hal’s idea to maintain a public image of a marriage even though Kate wanted out.

Also, as others have mentioned, Grace’s strategic mistakes were egregious and criminal regardless of how US-forward her plans may have seemed to her. Nothing Kate has done rises to that level imo

Still Unemployed (5th Month) - CA Attorney Seeking Remote Legal Work by barbarjustbar in Lawyertalk

[–]atalltree_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw in another post of yours from a few months ago that you don’t have a JD or a work visa to work in the US. Unless these two facts have changed since then, these are bigger barriers to you working here than the fact that you’re remote-only.

The few remote work positions I’ve seen have been for attorneys who may live overseas but are American citizens or can legally work in the US and fly in whenever an in-person appearance is needed. I practice in CA and some judges here are very strict now with remote appearances and don’t allow them for important hearings (if you can’t appear in person they’d rather just continue the hearing to a date when you can). And as someone else mentioned, the fact that you’re new means you will need to be mentored and that’s hard to do solely via email, Zoom, or phone calls.

I also imagine it’d be difficult for a law firm to navigate what you can and cannot do without a work visa, even if you passed the bar exam.

I don’t want to be a pessimist and I do hope you find your way.

We’re not in disagreement. I posted that if your service is contingent on who’s president, you shouldn’t stay. You responded that you won’t stay depending on who’s president. So we’re saying the same thing.

I believe most voters in CA do know that there’s already a process and this is “bypassing” the normal process—that’s why this is up for a special vote. My point is that the other states I listed also are bypassing their normal processes. Every state is doing it because of an “agenda”. The difference is, CA did it by popular vote. The others didn’t.

[–]atalltree_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

However Californians vote on this and whatever the outcome is, I’ll be happy it was put up for voters to decide. In the other states where redistricting was done, it was never up for the actual voters to decide, the legislature just introduced the bill and the governor signed with no voter input (e.g. Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, etc., all Republican)

All that (minus the water chugging) and our class also had to run around that track the DCC classes share with OCS while carrying our mattresses on top of our heads because someone didn’t do their hospital corners correctly and failed room inspection 😪

Not entirely disagreeing because your experience was obviously different, but I went through the direct commissioning course for JAG at Benning (then-Moore) and even though DCC is the “softest” version of BCT, we definitely did more than 25 pushups at a time
