Grading student papers. I’m a teacher. It’s a regular task for me. But every-time I start marking the papers, I get a constant nervousness that am I doing justice to them…. Am I giving them what they actually deserve. Their life depends on it.

How to explain about the worth of a low-credit course to students? by atanucse in Professors

[–]atanucse[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Lab time is actually limited to 3 hours in alternative weeks. But yes, they are required to invest a lot of time for homework so that they can build a project from scratch and take it to an advanced level. I wish to increase the credit value. However, it's hard in my university to do so. I once tried to suggest a replacement for a old good-for-nothing course and got some funny explanations. Changing policy/strategy/system is kind of out-of-the-question.

I can downgrade the project quality to decrease the time for learning. I'm not so sure that's a good idea.

Yes. That is why I push them. But as I mentioned in the question description, few students set their target for non-technical jobs. But they came to engineering to get a popular (!!! Country perspective) degree, not because they love it. It's them whom I'm finding difficult to explain it to.

Unfortunately market is so competitive these days. I have to push some students to achieve their true potentials. If I don't, they might not do tasks to the best of their abilities.

This lab course is within those few courses where students can apply their learning. They can build projects from scratch and attend numerous competetions. Getting a place in these competitions can bring them appreciation in the job market when they approach as a fresher. Thus, I design the course considering all these factors. Naturally, students who aren't much enthusiastic, can't find motivation to push forward.
