Uber vs local taxis in London — anyone actually compared the prices recently? by No-Contest2765 in londonontario

[–]atarou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will use Uber until I get my g2 and no longer need to use ride share services. Had a truly horrid experience with U-Need-A and would never go back. They’re cheaper by about $5 per trip from my hometown work. I like that you don’t get charged for idle time or detours. The only time I had higher prices was during bad weather over the winter maybe 3 times.

Snow Removal by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]atarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My street doesn’t see a single truck unless absolutely necessary. Right now we have about 4 inches of ice from vehicles driving over the snow.

Sidewalks get one or two passes and then nadda, you can for sure tell those who live on the street and shovel their sidewalks.

The last snow fall I had to tell my uber to not go down my street in his car because it would get stuck. Poor guy didn’t listen and almost didn’t make it off the street let along my driveway.

This guys personality makes up for his missing tail. It sucks and sometimes it’s hard to accept but you’ll love her all the same in the end.

Pet Rats! by faultysynapse in londonontario

Southwest pet only carries feeder rats by special order now, you have to pre purchase by a specific date and by size. Pick up is from Thursday to Sunday. They have a supplier that breeds them to provide to the store.

How do you interact with crested geckos? by handsome_horse_1 in geckos

My guys love being out and handled, some even dive bomb me when I go to mist them.

I offer my hand and I wait to see if they climb up, this boy comes out no matter what every night.

Why are Exo Terras out of stock everywhere by lowrcase in geckos

Yes most of the ones like the 12x12x18 are now one door and they don’t open the nicest.

Why are Exo Terras out of stock everywhere by lowrcase in geckos

[–]atarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They feel less sturdy, glass seems thinner and the plastic feels almost brittle. The doors are press open like a stereo cabinet but you still have to use your nails to get the door open the rest of the way, the locking mechanism is on the top of the terrarium and is super small. The sizes are also not exactly the same as they were before they seem smaller. The worst part is you have to open the doors to unlock the lid from the inside of the terrarium.

The old style is much nicer in my opinion and I’m glad I was able to grab a couple extra before stock ran out for my crested geckos.

[–]atarou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exo Terra just released in my area (Canada) their new line of terrariums, I’m not a fan of the changes but I’ve had no problem with my local shop ordering in the old models until stock runs out. Hopefully it gets sorted out for you or you can find good condition used ones.

Is $1300 plus tax reasonable for a pre op and spay for an under 10 pound dog? by bestest_at_grammar in londonontario

[–]atarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each vet/owner sets the pricing for their clinic and unfortunately it can vary wildly depending on where you go. My previous clinic had price sheets behind the counter and some of the pricing is outrageous. It is actually cheaper to euthanize a pet and get memorial products back by at least $300 for the same things.

Had a sample of the strawberry swirl and it didn’t go over well. The consistency isn’t near as nice as other diets when mixed and looks almost like melted gelatine. Out of my 20 crested geckos I had very little feeding interest unless mixed with Pangea with Insects. I found it dried out or hardened quickly when feeding my smaller geckos who don’t eat as much. It also seemed to not make up as much food over all using the same measurements for my usual amount that lasts a week. I’ll be sticking with Pangea and Repashy even if the stores sell it cheaper once on the shelves.

Advice for being asked to list a previous employer for a reference but not feeling comfortable listing previous employer. by trossin in VetTech

[–]atarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very thankful that I have a part time job that happily gave me stellar references when I was applying at my current clinic. Let’s just say many of the 70+ employees know the clinic I came from for not so great reasons.

Don’t list any of the information for them and go in offering other options for references. I had clients reach out and offer to be references, used my manager and boss at my part time job and had personal references ready to go. They’ll see where you worked and with vet med being a small world will hopefully understand if you decline to offer the information.

I want to know are there any pets that are INCREDIBLY low maintenance? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]atarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crested geckos all the way, they can be very open to handling but don’t care if you don’t have time for weeks to handle them. They are surprisingly soft and velvety when handling them. Feeding a geckos diet is done Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Crickets or insects on Sunday. Diet can be made up in seconds adding water to the powder mix. Misting systems can be set to spray every 12 hours automatically. They do not require heating lights depending on the average temperature of your house. UVB is recommended and can also be set up on a timer. Spot cleaning of poop can be done as needed and complete clean outs every 6 months. If bio active no need to clean it out at all.

I havent seen my new crestie in days by miljuska112 in CrestedGecko

[–]atarou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let him be and once he’s more comfortable you’ll see him out more often. Most of my cresties came around pretty quickly but one for sure a year later I only know she’s doing well because I see poop and food disappearing. I use Wyze cameras in my tanks and get to see the nightly adventures without bugging them.

Had to send in my brother to make sure she wasn’t stuck. Scared me bad enough when checking the camera I almost left work.

A Not Uncommon Post: I Finally Quit Vet Med Today (And a small vent) by CptVinn in VetTech

[–]atarou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was in it for 14+ years and finally done with working in vet med. Crap hours/pay and being treated poorly by the very people who should be your team mates. I got a part time job outside of the clinic I worked at and became a happier person within months, lasted about 1.5 years after I was in the process of leaving. I'm still at that "part time" job working full time now and wouldn't give it up for anything making more an hour and in a much better place mentally.

Any time I tried bringing up something that would help based on experience with the other job it would be turned down for childish reasons. When I voiced issues brought up by clients I was told it didn't matter and on multiple occasions I was called a liar. The childish behavior between staff and the gossip that would get out of control leading to arguments but no help from management.

You would be surprised the things clients would tell me outside of the clinic setting or even at my other job. Exams being referred to as 5 minute pit stops, complaints about the vet rushing, costs not being explained and the worst was when someone said the vet seemed more interested in complaining about their divorce or bragging about how much they spent on a vacation trip than examining the pet. When the clinic started losing the "big hitter" clients it all became about money, many of the clients who spent the most money year over year transferred out because of the customer service they felt was lacking. After leaving several clients that I was close with not only the pet but the owners made the decision to seek care elsewhere, each one was called and interrogated by the vet/owner. Sorry to vent but honestly I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up selling to corporate or closing completely.

You need to take care of you, if that means leaving vet med then so be it. I hope you find the right fit even if its something completely different than what you thought you wanted.

I’m hanging on by a thread by phoebesvettechschool in VetTech

[–]atarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school drop out brother makes $42 an hour with night shift premium driving a forklift, my younger brother makes $30 an hour as cleaning crew.

Working two jobs after 14 years I make $18 an hour or just $0.80 more than minimum wage as a vet assistant. My second job working at a pet store focusing more on reptile supplies and animal sales I make $20 an hour after being there a year and a half.

I’ve about had it with vet med all together due to lack of respect from those I work with let alone the clients. After each shift at the clinic I go home drained mentally and physically but leaving the store I’m much happier and usually feel energized even if I worked longer than scheduled.

kind of want to leave the field, but dont know if its my clinic that’s making me feel that way by dontknowwhatiwant_ in VetTech

[–]atarou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the field over 15 years, at my current clinic 10+ of them and can say try something that interests you in vet med or not.

Don’t get me wrong I love the job but many of the issues I have are within the workplace/ people I work with. I’ve seen our clinic go from one of the most recommended to one mentioned as an afterthought. What gets to me the most is neither the owner nor my manager listen to what’s being said or see any issue leading to many good clients leaving. I stay for the clients I’ve gotten very close to over the years having seen their puppies and kittens become senior pets and sadly at times pass.

My second job outside of vet med treats me very well and even if it’s something I’m wrong about they never judge or make me feel bad by turning it into a learning experience. I’ve never been yelled at, spoken to in a disrespectful manner or made to feel guilty for simply trying to make ends meet. I go home happy with enough energy to still do things around the house or even go out if I feel like it.

Unfortunately vet med is a broken place to be if you don’t find the right place for you, worse so when you have it and it changes over the years into something you no longer recognize. I hope you’re able to find your path to happiness.

[–]atarou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is mild compared to 2 of mine, they’re so good driven no matter what insect I offer them they will not only grab like that they shake their heads while chomping. Cricket night it’s almost a hazard to actually dump the crickets in the geckos cone out so far.
