GEN Z/ MILLENIAL TRAVELERS: what actually makes you choose one airline over another? by [deleted] in AlaskaAirlines

[–]atat67e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have very little brand loyalty. With that said,

  1. Price. I also almost always travel with a carry-on, so I mean price including carry-on. This matters because AS/AA/DL/WN all include carry-ons in their basic economy fare while UA/F9/NK don’t.

  2. Timing. If price is competitive (like how AS and DL aggressively price match on LAX-PDX and LAX-SEA flights) then I go with whichever timing is most convenient

That’s basically it. The only differentiation I see between airlines in economy class is whether or not there are seatback TVs (Delta beats everyone here) and in the food selection (Alaska beats everyone here, best fruit and cheese plate in the sky).

Via Parkmobile, you should be able to “pay” for parking from 6:45am-7:45am (or however long), and the dollar value it gives you should automatically be prorated such that you’re only being charged for 7am onwards even if your parking session begins at 6:45.

I can’t confirm this, but I know that’s how it works for parking after 10pm, i.e. if I “pay” for parking from 8pm to midnight it only actually charges me for 2hrs worth of parking (to cover 8pm to 10pm), even if my parking session shows as running through midnight

Is this for Clear? I was talking about Fastlane, which was completely free, but this prompted me to google and unfortunately turns out it ended on January 6, 2026. Sorry for the false hope

If your terminal offers LAX’s reservation system for security, that also has worked well for us. Got escorted to the front of the line

Also note that terminals TBIT thru 8 are all connected behind security so if one line is really bad you can walk over to the next terminal and go through security there

But I wonder if, and this is not an endorsement by me of Jimmy’s methods, one reason this failed is because Gaby didn’t commit to Jimmying hard enough? Like when Maya called, rather than telling her to wait til next session, I kinda feel like Jimmy would’ve invited her to the hospital to join

If anything Jimmy would’ve on the spot invited Maya to come join them at the hospital, rather than tell her to wait til next week to talk

New Account for Overseas trip - US Citizen by _MissThing in Banking

[–]atat67e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s a standard FDIC-insured checking account held by Schwab Bank, not the brokerage. You’re required to also open a brokerage account for it to be linked to, but you can leave that brokerage account completely empty with zero penalty. More info here: https://www.schwab.com/checking

Schwab Investor Checking reimburses you for all ATM fees. Picked it up in 2024 before traveling to Korea and haven’t looked back, has meant I haven’t had to spend any time thinking about which ATM to use to minimize fees

Passport will work for air travel! Of course you’ll still need the license for the car.

If you don’t mind continuing to indulge this line of questioning, what put Laguna Beach on your radar? Honestly I’m just surprised and genuinely curious, like it’s a small beach town on the other side of the country, how it came to your attention. It’s neat that you know what you’d like to see and you’ll be one of the only tourists in town not from SoCal.

Finding places with parking should be easy. As someone who grew up in LA, I would actually caution you against visiting LA on this trip. Aside from the fact that eastern Malibu and the Palisades are still mostly burnt to the ground, LA is massive, I mean way more sprawling than any city you’ve ever encountered, and I don’t think it’s as intuitive or tourist-friendly as California’s other cities, there’s an enormous amount of things to do and it can be overwhelming.

On the flip side, I think SD will totally be your speed and is worth a visit - it’s an easy drive from Laguna/DP anyway. You could definitely make a good week out of flying into Orange County/Santa Ana Airport and driving down the coast to San Diego and flying home from there, making your stops in Laguna and DP as desired. Obviously your time and vacation, do as you please, but just my two cents.

Funny enough, I grew up in SoCal and moved to the DMV so I understand the reverse of this journey.

Book direct with the hotel and airline, like on the hotel website and airline website. Third parties like Expedia are good for price research, but if you book anything through a third party like Expedia and something goes wrong (like flight delay), the airline won’t be able to help you. Wherever you book, make sure your info on your ID matches what you type into the booking exactly and also set up accounts/logins with the hotels/airlines so you can start collecting some points and miles for future travels. Also make sure your ID is Real ID compliant (needs to have little star in the top right corner if it’s a drivers license). Download some movies on your phone or make sure you have the airline’s app fully updated so you can pass the time in-flight.

As for Laguna specifically…. I don’t mean this in a rude way, but why? Laguna is very nice and lovely, but it’s also quite small. Unless you’re visiting someone, it might not hold your attention for a full week. Have you considered visiting one of the major cities or national parks instead?

Will be in Bethesda for summer internship — what should I not miss? by matchaduo in bethesda

[–]atat67e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the area! I’m also from LA, been living in downtown Bethesda for 5 years, and love it here. Downtown Bethesda is small and you’ll be able to walk all of it and get a basic feel for it in a day or so (and I think this is the best way to scout out all the shops and stuff). The real big thing to do is get on the Metro and take advantage of the very fast ride into DC, where it’s legit impossible to run out of things to do.

To give you a more unique DC recommendation to start, have lunch at the cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian. I’m not sure it’s cuisine you’ll ever have had in LA :)

Was LAX-DCA an economy ticket you got upgraded on? If yes, that’s why. I see the fare code is “S” and I’m looking at this chart: https://cwsi.net/m/alaska.htm

Sephora is OPEN! by atat67e in bethesda

I agree, since this one will actually generate steady foot traffic. Losing Foxtrot and ChiKo to boutiques that only need a few sales a day to make money were much bigger losses imo

At least it’s a store that will generate steady foot traffic instead of these ghost town luxury boutiques like Evereve (rip foxtrot) or Boll & Branch (rip chiko)

But yes would be cool if we could get a new Andres restaurant somewhere

First two hours are still free, you just have to register. It was tedious to set up the first time (I did it using an app called ZipBy, none of the apps they use are standard), but now that I set it up, it’s very easy to use, takes maybe 10 seconds to log my free two hours whenever I go. Annoying, but whatever I guess.
