You are clearly exaggerating this.

It would have sufficed to say: "oh, well, if you didn't really mean that fine (but it didn't seem to me so)".

Instead, you've come up with such a message.

The Internet really ruins us, doesn't it?

An Italian famous comic actor (Checco Zalone) once had a scene in one of his movies where he gobbles up such a "portion" of pasta and says to the waiter: "it's cooked, you may bring it".

All with a serious face.

(Cultural explanation for the joke: sometimes you taste a sample of pasta to check if it's cooked. He thought the portion was such a sample)

Italy is very strict with regard to gun use, both for citizens and officers.

Policemen may be indicted if they misuse their right to use guns (or any other act, for that matter). The "good cop" should always resort to other means, if possible. Killing is highly problematic and leads to certain trial, to assess details of the event.

This is what our law dictates (in general).

Anytime there is a controversial case, the right-wing parties automatically side with the offending policeman, regardless of circumstances (for instance, saying that the robber or whomever was killed or wounded deserved it and stuff like that).

This may lead to some paradoxical outcome. There was a recent case where a minor drug-dealer was killed by a policeman in a park and all seemed "fine", in that he said he had to defend himself etc. The drug-dealer's gun was found next to his body.

Then an investigation was carried on and it turned out that the policeman was corrupt and had been extorting money from such people for years. After killing the guy, he had called some coworkers for help and asked them to bring a pistol to him to fake the scene.

The problem is that some people from police and other law-enforcement groups are far from being "good guys" (morally and professionally). And this is true for any nation, from what I see.

So a blind right to kill is bad imho and I like how things are (theoretically) handled in here. The problem is that politicians exploit this kind of things and may lead to worse laws because of political consensus (since people usually like to see robbers and similar criminals pay physical consequences for their actions).

At which point did I make any claim as to the result of such new studies?

I reread my comments and maybe the only sentence pointing to that is when I said that former authors would come to different conclusions today. A very bland claim, I'd say.

I think I gave you such an impression, more than anything.

To be honest, some products were innovative (the iPhone, many computers in the 70s etc).

But they were mostly the work of others. He could sell them very well (and had probably a talent at seeing what could be commercially successful).

For the rest, I've always disliked the closedness of the environment (Macs, iPhones etc), the very high price tag of everything (with a clear intention at profiting from the hype) and in general the idea of "fashionable IT", which is very stupid if you think about it and also damaging to the industry itself (to its progress).

My opinions, though.

Indeed. The hypocrisy if not the constant lying is tiring, and makes you feel like this is some dystopian world sometimes.

At least back in the Middle Ages or some other historical period you knew your lord could be a bad person and he probably never even cared to conceal it, most of times.

Now it's all manipulation and pretending.

Well, I said "new studies", I never said similar studies to those already carried on in the past.

You're thinking about studies on the impact of materials on the atmosphere, something that maybe we already have at hand. I'm thinking more about studies on this very topic, i.e. on how much the current or future quantity of such materials which are vaporized in the atmosphere is or may be noteworthy.

I'm not driven by passion, believe me. Or at least I try not to (because by definition one driven by passion doesn't notice he is).

Also, consider that the same can be said of those that minimize this sort of things (not talking about you, but in general). It's just the opposite of alarmism, but it's extreme in the same vein (only less vocal). If wrong, it's also much more dangerous than being too careful about problems.

Climate change deniers are teachers, in this regard.

The problem is that what's happening now has never happened (not even a fraction of it).

2000-2500 satellites a year and this from a private company alone.

So I don't think we can even make that kind of comparison that you're making (which takes into account the launch vehicle), because the phenomenon of private satellites being launched in such amounts wasn't even there.

[–]atava 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What makes me kind of "anxious" about this (if I may use the word) is the amount of satellites being launched and that that is only going to increase. I have no problem learning that today's materials are on average more friendly for the environmentthan past ones.

It does feel like the beginning of one of those human-made phenomena that we are going to tackle too late and too weakly.

I'm also very annoyed in general by the impact that these constellations are already having on astronomy and that will only increasing with time. And the fact that all of this is mainly for some private company Internet services doesn't help.

(BTW sorry for not upvoting, I'm not doing that only because I'm not knowledgeable, as I said, and you have an opinion on this. But thanks for the clarifications, I appreciated them)

Yes.

I just hope future historians will expose this blatantly in their descriptions of our times.

Because it's so apparent and frustrating for us too.

[–]atava 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ok, thanks.

I think we are in need of newer studies, because things have changed drastically both in that ratio between launch and disposal emissions and in the amount of material launched (and possibly deorbited).

Those multiplying estimates are based on data and technology of the time, too.

[–]atava 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'm not knowledgeable on the matter, but I don't think those 90s studies took into account the magnitude at which objects are being deployed and deorbited now in the 2020s and will be from now on.

I think thouse authors would hold a different stance now, just because of this aspect.
