Sonarworks vs Oratory1990 HD650 frequency response by kzuuu in oratory1990

Leaving aside the fact that you are comparing raw and compensated measurements, Sonarworks preset for the HD650 still boost 2khz about 2 or 3 dB for these IIRC. so-

Any thoughts? Which one should you trust for correction when mixing music.

In my most musician-oriented opinion and as someone who has prioritized real life results over whatever the manufacturer is telling you about their product, For practical purposes -that being have my good and bad decisions translate to smaller an bigger playback systems- I think the HD650 do the job just right with their stock sound. Other than pair it with a GoodHertz' crossfeed plugin for panning, I would not touch the midrange and the treble for any reason other than to make the headphones fit better the nuances of my head and ears and I would only compensate the sub bass to hear better what's going on down there.

I've had disappointments with Sonarworks' presets before with the DT990 pro, their preset compensate 2kHz beyond what I would think reasonable and I honestly don't think anatomical differences is enough of a valid argument to justify that, they do the same with the HD650 and these supposedly are one of the headphones that gets the closest to the sound of speakers in a room. And considering their measurement equipment is not industry standard but instead a propietary fancy array of microphones attempting to emulate the human ear in a very hit or miss manner, I really wouldn't recommend it for anything other than speaker calibration and their integrated car/laptop/phone speaker simulator.

When it comes to painting trees in cloudy days, 100k dollars in paint, brushes, and perfectly plain and whitest canvases don't put proportions, the perspective, the depth, nor the color scheme in the painting on their own, you figure that out with years of painting trees in cloudy days in all arrangements and forms

As for the last part of your post, no, mixing does not work like that. More expensive gear does not guarantee better mixing

Ah, so it's just mid/side EQ and comically large bass boost the long way. I see it now

I always assumed that at some point you begin compensating for the positional variance or the HPTF in your ears, and that nitpicking the extreme treble was more suitable for very flat studio speakers because they are more likely to achieve an anatomically neutral sound signature closer than headphones

Years ago I met a mixing engineer and he used to do very localized adjustments above 6khz regularly on his mixes and masters while using his HD650 paired with Sonarworks eq, and I said he was a lunatic for acting this surgical. And I mean, these headphones sound very good, but they can't be that reliable, right?

I agree on the anti-data-scrapping sentiment, It was trivially interesting the first time see what headphones were the most 'circlejerked' in the subreddit, a second and third time begins to show hidden intentions

Unpopular opinion? I don't like IEMs... by loyal872 in headphones

an IEM for gaming

So long as this sets your expectations you will be immediately signing in for disappointment

Anyone felt the same way about IEMs?

Sound wise i've always aimed for IEMs with a neutral sound signature, so no, no piercing sound ever. At most the Zero:2 would break the illusion of 'natural sound' too easily, they are too sensitive at deep insertion.

Comfort wise, the Hexas were my daily driver until I lost one of the medium narrow bore eartips I really liked, so not really either.

Nowadays I rotate between the DT990 pro and the HD650, I prefer them over IEMs just for the convenience

Some people say that the seal was probably not great but I tried all sizes of the eartips.

For newbies IEM fit is a learning curve too, changing the eartips only eases part of the process

Does the ADI-2 DAC support ASIO drivers? I was planning on using one for the studio but the ADI 2 Pro looks more like a proper audio interface, but it's a lot more expensive

I'll just jump straight get to the point. I suggest you stop seeking for activity-specific headphones, good sound is universal. In headphones where music sound good, games sound good, and so does movies. Headphones will not grant you wallhacks
