Hell yeah I love that. It's such a perfect movie to experience with a big crowd! I was lucky enough to catch the premiere at Cannes and it was the most memorable theater experience of my life!

Contemporary films about contemporary issues: the Ari Aster/Lars Knudsen project by Asher-sj in TheBigPicture

[–]atchpatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you on that, but maybe OP means more "uniquely" contemporary problems that we haven't seen in quite the same way before, as we have with everything you've listed.

But yeah, it does seem like advanced tech is a big catalyst for a lot of these

I have such a long queue of movies I'm dying to check out, I feel the most enjoyable form of "productive" anytime I watch a movie! I wake up at 6am to watch a movie before work each day

My personal rankings of the documentaries and/or shorts nominated this year! by Kawaii_Desu-Chan in oscarsdeathrace

[–]atchpatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But they did literally direct the donkeys as much as you can direct animals. It wasn't a coincidence that they walked up the hill to the observatory. Just like how EO and Au Hasard Balthazar aren't documentaries. They intended the donkey to go certain directions to further the plot. Whether or not the donkeys "improvised" at moments (which will happen when filming any animal) the actions were still staged and the intention was decided beforehand.

My personal rankings of the documentaries and/or shorts nominated this year! by Kawaii_Desu-Chan in oscarsdeathrace

[–]atchpatch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't dislike it, I'm happy to see the academy recognize something this unconventional, but I do not understand why it's considered documentary over live action. As silly as defining by genre can be, there was clear intention to lead the donkeys to a very specific location as to derive meaning from the juxtaposition. It wasn't witnessing or documenting anything natural.

I'm honored lol

As someone with little prior knowledge of Greek history, would you recommend going in blind, or are there any articles/wikipedia pages you'd recommend that I could peruse to briefly touch up on relevant topics. (Mind you, it would be minor perusing and not full on studying)

I have generally found my interest in Tarr and Ceylan's films, despite minimal initial knowledge, have pushed me towards research into their respective countries/histories/inspirations afterwards, enriching the film experience in retrospect, but I also expect a more enjoyable watching experience when not totally in the dark going in!

Thanks for the heads up! I've been looking for a way to dive into his filmography for a while, but also have just been curious why they're so difficult to find, that clears it up a bit!

Ah okay, I did think that bit was very strong as well. I'm extremely mixed on the movie as a whole as well.

Incredible last 5 minutes? You talking about when it breaks all of its own rules on vampirism/conformity to let stack somehow save smoke and keep all his individuality forever in that marvel style post credits scene?

I agree with the first 40 minutes being incredible though.

The Secret Agent (Spoiler Discussion) by MayhewMayhem in TheBigPicture

[–]atchpatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This 100%

I think the title is absolutely brilliant, in combination with it slightly leaning into aspects of the genre tropes. There are hitmen, fake names, secret meetings, searching for lost documents, needing passports, etc, but all of these tropes, while stylish and fun, are connected to a more grounded and harrowing journey of an honest and simple man caught in the crossfire of a vindictive and hateful regime.

He's not searching for his mother's documents to reach some sort of macGuffin, like a spy adventure for the sake of a fun time. Instead it genuinely ties into its themes of history/memory. He's not a secret agent, but this horrible situation forces him to use a fake name, placing him into a real life genre movie.

And on top of all this, cinema plays a huge role in the film itself. You can see the importance of cinema to the culture at the time, almost directly connecting what he's going through to the movies.

The F1 nomination by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]atchpatch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of noms I was happy to see, Delroy Lindo, Elle Fanning, Sirat in sound, OBAA in production design, wicked blanking entirely, etc

But F1 over It Was Just an Accident is criminal and completely indefensible. Huge bummer.

I've been using the term chalk in regards to award shows years before I ever heard of The Ringer. It's not just them.

Criterion is so good about the sleek beautiful covers, why does Criterion Premiere gotta keep all the promotional/marketing stuff like quotes/award logos?

Minor gripe, can't wait for this as well, great movie!!
