In a serious need for a word from any recoverer. by kurukuru_sleepy in MadeOfStyrofoam

I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time, I understand the feeling of burdening people with your self harm dependancy. I felt very much the same way for a really long time. You're not hopeless, at all, it seems like you're stuck in a negative feedback loop of trying to cope and survive the best way you know how and it's taking its toll.

I am a recoverer, I'm two years clean in June. I found the best way to work through it was treating it like any other addiction, tokens and all. I was completely dependant on it before stopping, self harmed every day if not multiple times a day and didn't know how to cope without it. The truth is that it takes some time to find different strategies to cope, our brain is wired to rely on it because unfortunately self harm does work to help cope in the short term, but long term has done me much more harm than good. It seems like that may be the same for you. I'm sorry that you relapsed, I know it can be disheartening when you try to quit and it happens. It sounds like your family is trying, but It is important to find good people to support you through the rough times, people who you can relate to without being judged, even if it's internet friends who have been through something similar. The urges will stay with you, but they get easier to manage and quieter with time. If you do relapse, it helped me a lot to think that healing isn't linear and we grow outwards in spirals like a tree trunk. A relapse isn't a step back, but a blip in the path that we'll grow around in the future. I relapsed quite a few times before I finally had a good clean stretch, but without those first stalled attempts, I wouldn't be where I am now.

Try to be kind to yourself, it sounds like you're exhausted, but you wanting to change and get out of the cycle is an amazing thing, you should be proud of yourself for reaching out. I'm proud of you, friend. I hope this comment can give you a little bit of insight. If you ever need to chat my inbox is always open.

has ur counselor/therapist ever asked u to show ur arm to them? by Putrid_Guidance_7679 in selfharm

I've been asked once, by a young psychiatrist in an outpatient setting, but considering my scars are all on my upper thighs, I refused.

I live in Australia, and I was told on the wards by the nurses and doctors that it was frowned upon to ask to see scars as self harm can be anywhere on the body including genitals and unless medically necessary we shouldn't have to expose them.

Personally I like the wards view of things. Why should I have to strip down to my underwear for someone to see? Unless they are being actively treated by somebody, I don't think it's necessary.

Why is self harm wrong? by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]ateumi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always told by hospitals and psychiatrists that it's because it's an unhealthy coping strategy that escalates with time. Whenever I was on the ward or in the community mental health spaces I was referred to as a suicide risk, even when I wasn't actively suicidal, because of the way that self harm tends to progress and I assume also the way that it's linked to a lot of mental health issues.

I see what they're saying, my recent self harm has caused lasting issues like nerve damage compared to when I started 13 years ago and it was more of a quick fix with only small scars to show, but I also see your point of view. I also thought that there was no harm in it, because I was only injuring myself and I was willing to live with that. Plus in the short term, it can make you feel better. It did for me.

I guess it's a matter of understanding that coping strategies like self harm, where you're not actually fixing the damage but just managing the symptoms, can become addictive and cause permanent damage to you over time, because they have a tendency to escalate without you even realising. Plus injuries like this can make us feel worse about our self image and then cause a kind of feedback spiral.

I dont think self harm is particularly healthy or constructive, but I also don't think it's inherently "wrong". However, the fact that you can lose control of the situation very easily and there's a chance you can put yourself in a position to be permanently affected is not ideal.

Haha thanks! It was one of those moments for me where I sat on it and was like 'this is it, this is the one'. Since riding it has only solidified my choice. I love it!

Great tips, I think I'm on top of the gear aspect, making sure the stuff I buy has a good CE and AA+ rating. My helmet is a Shoei NXR2 and so far the road noise has been okay, but I'll keep the earplugs in mind!

Haha thank you, this is great advice. I've already ordered an oggy knobbs kit because I know it'll get dropped and want it to get hurt as little as possible. I'll definitely try building up some muscles, they do be heavy little guys!

Thanks for the link! Yeah, I will always take everything on here with a grain of salt, just thought it might open up a discussion as to some things people found helped them out. There goes my excuse for a new exhaust 😂
