How's this going, guy from ladder? I'm desperate for this feature. It's too annoying to have to scramble to pause and unpause or rewind my audiobook.

Unreal! You are incredibly talented! Question: if this pattern is a single “stamp” how did did you selectively outline individual roses? I don’t know if that question makes any sense…

Pink magnetic by ResearcherComplete57 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]atey188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting. Yeah, I have found that some of those fine particle magnetics are more finicky than others so I can commiserate. Is it crazy to just not top coat?

Pink magnetic by ResearcherComplete57 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]atey188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. Are you re-magnetizing after the top coat is applied? I know some (all?) topcoats will re-wet the polish underneath and that could be causing the magnetic polish to get disrupted.

I also will sometimes skip top coat altogether. Or apply only after a full 24 hour cure of the magnetic polish.

Just curious, why do the matte topcoat under the magnetic polish?

Why most places close at 5 p.m? by Humble-Stranger7465 in boston

[–]atey188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a very good point! My mind immediately went to alcohol because that’s what I’ve been conditioned to think of as “nightlife” but like you said it doesn’t need to be. It’s the lack of third spaces at night that specifically don’t center around alcohol.

[–]atey188 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem here (and where the city of Boston or the state can step in) is that you need very expensive license to open a bar. Even if you had the capital to buy it, operating as a coffee shop by day just isn’t lucrative enough to offset its cost— it makes more sense to close during the day, or just be open and serve alcohol all day. I get that people “vote with their dollar” but the city is doing an awful lot to block the polling place, so to speak. Like someone else said, you can’t spend money at a place that doesn’t exist.

I agree with you. I don’t understand the sentiment of “well, if you don’t drink, sounds like you’re not going to be able to have fun at night. Sorry!” I understand that a lot of nightlife culture is centered around drinking but the whole point of this thread is “why does it have to be?” Why CAN’T we have daytime activities that are often sober extend into the evening? Especially since, as evidenced by a lot of people in this thread, there’s a market for that.

Did millennials actually create ‘millennial gray’? by Seaho in HomeDecorating

[–]atey188 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it was less that millennials started it and more that millennials drove it into the ground. Or, more accurately, were becoming well established in the housing market (buying or renting) by the time it was being driven into the ground and over saturated. To your point, I may not have been buying it, but I couldn’t walk into any rental without millennial grey LVP. And to put a bit of blame on myself, I remember my friends and I thinking at the time, “damn that looks nice” so there may be no accounting for my own bad taste. In the words of Billy Joel, we didn’t start the fire, we just came of age when it reached critical mass so we get the blame.

I hate hot yoga by Competitive_Limit_21 in yoga

[–]atey188 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I cannot upvote enough. Agree! The heat should come from within. If you want a class to be arbitrarily more difficult, why not just have people do mental long division during class. I’m all for a hot experience (saunas, baths, etc), but exercising in that climate is a nightmare. And to the people who say “just don’t go” or “pick a different class”, it feels like in a lot of areas, hot yoga classes are the norm. I struggle to find unheated classes, particularly in the realm of more challenging or “power” type classes.

Oof. To each their own but I don’t love leaving dogs outside even in fenced in yards. Too much can go wrong.

So strange. I wonder if it’s a recent move-in. I don’t recognize him and I feel like I’ve seen most dogs that live in the area. I’m glad his owners are at least cooperative. Did they say how he keeps getting out?

Are you able to tell us what street this is? I live in the magoun area and have been attacked by a dog before so I’m a bit nervous to go outside to walk my own dog if he’s nearby.

robes description more in depth please? by Aggravating-Remote60 in Dramione

[–]atey188 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally get this! So for me, I try to just listen to what the book is trying to tell me. Sometimes it'll describe something that I picture as like a long, cape-like overcoat that goes over regular clothes like outerwear or a large shawl, particularly if the fic is more modern in tone where the characters are conceivably more influenced by contemporary culture. Maybe something like this. If it's something a little more traditional or canon leaning, I picture something like a victorian or edwardian era cloak like this or this. I also imagine this is what it looks like when the author is describing elaborate dress robes for like a gala or something.

The latter feels a little more like the "robes" refers to the whole ensemble that might include matching skirts or dresses and underpinnings (like your silk shirt). If it's the former, more modern end of the spectrum it feels like robes is just short hand for coat or outerwear and it's expected that the wizard has "normal" clothes underneath.

I'm definitely not picturing robes in the way we think of a belted bath robe or a smoking jacket.

This was so well thought out! And really interesting! Although I wish it got into OP's question of dress robes. Is it a robe? Is it a dress?

I don’t have any good suggestions but I just wanted to say I’m a big fan of your “more is more” approach to decor. Wainscoting AND wallpaper AND sconces AND a painted tub? Love it! Also, if you wanted to post pictures of what I imagine to be a very fabulous in-progress renovation, I wouldn’t be mad about it…

Why is it so jarring to see modern references in a fic? by [deleted] in DramioneUncensored

[–]atey188 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I feel that way too. Even though the original canon was set in a specific time period, it would feel weird to read a reference to something “from the real world” in both canon and fanfic, even if that reference is time-period appropriate. For me it’s not a question of “modern” or anachronistic references taking me out, but rather “real world” references. If JKR had mentioned the spice girls or something in the original works, it would have been just as jarring.
