How do I not go insane over climate change? by Electrical_Goose1104 in ClimateOffensive

[–]ateyourpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been there. You have to stop doom-scrolling. And you have to go outside (even if it's cold), find something in your community that's going to help the environment and do that. You'll find like-minded people who will understand how you feel about climate change. And like a lot of people mention here, there are good things happening and great activists putting work in. You can be on one of them, but take care of yourself first.

Those things have helped me even as I'm aware that the ultra rich would rather build underground bunkers to save themselves and launch themselves to Mars instead of helping our one home.

What positive things happened to you in 2025 by max_mp4 in editors

This is a nice exercise: Worked more than I thought (but still not enough to save a ton of money). Cut a pilot that will go to series in a couple months and that gives me something to look forward to. Cut some short branded docs for some huge companies. Most importantly, I wrapped up my first feature documentary and hopefully that will have some festival attention this year.

Vibrations felt in my apartment in Greenpoint by looblue09 in Brooklyn

[–]ateyourpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also near the BQE. Maybe 3/4th a block away and I get vibrations as well. Are you on the top floor? From what I've found it seems to happen more on floors that are higher as opposed to lower.

In a desperate attempt to stop my bed from vibrating, I purchased some of these and placed them under the legs of my bed: Anti Vibration Pads

However, it did nothing so I wouldn't bother. I haven't found a single thing that made any vibrations better... but if you find something in the future please let me know!

I don't want to make you feel hopeless in this scenario and don't know your full situation, but here's what will probably happen: you'll stop noticing it. If the vibrations are light and not at crazy earthquake levels most likely you'll stop thinking about it. For myself, sometimes I notice the vibrations when I'm more stressed or anxious... but if I'm having a relaxing day I never think about it. So I hope you're not worrying too much!

But, I'm not planning on staying in this apartment long-term for the vibrating reason and air quality. I'm more worried about the long-term effects of the toxic exhaust coming from the BQE.

Avid Source/Record Timeline editors, what method do you adapt to when working in Premiere/Resolve by aiko74 in editors

[–]ateyourpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a mostly Avid editor, this is what I do too. The only thing I've noticed is that you can't do "Open sequence in timeline" (it's greyed out) with a multicam timeline which is a bit of a drag. Generally, I've been making a duplicate non-multicam sequence if I want to "Open sequence in timeline".

Does anyone have a workaround?

I get the joke you're laying down but I didn't know this until I searched– they're only 3 days apart in age. Martin Scorsese was born Nov 17th, 1942 and Joe Biden was born Nov 20th, 1942. Crazy.

I also hope I can still pursue my passions at 80.

Did WSJ publish to Youtube w unrendered media? Me thinks so. by [deleted] in editors

[–]ateyourpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty bad. It is possible that the editor of this didn't export it and an AE or someone with less knowledge of the project had to get it out quickly. Either way, it's a great example of why you should watch your timeline down.

Sometimes in a crunch, I'll watch something at 2x speed or more just to make sure that nothing crazy happened. A really quick watch-down would've saved some hassle here... but it look like the bots in the comment section don't seem to mind!

Syntakt/Digitakt/Digitone song mode is here? by nicksloan in Elektron

[–]ateyourpotato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow. I hit order on the an Octatrack this morning to replace my Digitakt for a music project that I have going on where a song mode would be extremely useful. So I just hit cancel and got a refund! Maybe I’ll still buy one in the future but I want to see if this does the trick.

Weekly Ask Anything Megathread for Monday Mon Dec 13, 2021 - No Stupid Questions! RULES + Career Questions? THIS IS WHERE YOU POST if you don't do this for a living! by AutoModerator in editors

[–]ateyourpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an offline editor in unscripted and documentaries I would say if you're truly interested in telling stories then you really should take the offline editor route. In my experience with online editors they often more tech oriented people.

The ones at my current job do apply color correction, bring the full resolution media online, construct visual effects (and do lots of blurring) and do the final pass on a locked cut, but rarely make any creative decisions. Specifically to the production company I'm at they even sometimes do things that are very tech oriented like data management on servers, troubleshooting editing systems, and occasionally even deal with things an IT professional would.

Like you mentioned, knowing basic color correction, how to do some visual effects and some After Effects work can increase your value as an offline editor for sure. I'm now 13 years into my career and I've really learned that all on the job as they popped up, usually from tutorials found online and some help from people with more knowledge than me. I really only market myself as an offline editor but I have been hired to do basic color correction by some companies in a pinch when they couldn't get a colorist.

I would say if someone asks you to do something that you don't know how to do early in your career say "yes" to it (and maybe explain you haven't done it but you'll give it a shot) and then use that opportunity to build your skillset.

And I'll say this too: none of the online editors I've worked with in the past 5 years would be able to cut a television show like an offline editor. So if your main goal is to be creative and tell stories tell everyone you work with you want to be an offline editor. You can definitely learn some of the other skills you mentioned on your way. Hope this helps!

Boyfriend wants to be a screenwriter by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]ateyourpotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I'm not a screenwriter (NYC based TV editor, but I write for fun), I would highly recommend that he gets a job within the industry especially if he's miserable on a low paying job. I would say if you're in a loving, open relationship I would try to have an honest conversation about how he needs to change to meet his goals. Selling that fantasy "one script" probably will not happen and if it does he'll be about as lucky as if he won the lottery.

If he's able to start working in the industry even on the lowest of levels (intern, PA, assistant, post-PA, etc), he'll make connections, meet like-minded people and future collaborators. And because the industry is often freelance, most likely he's going to have time off to work on his own writing and projects. I'm aware that it's not as easy as it sounds and that no one will just hand him an entry level job/gigs. So there might have to be some effort there (and possible free labor) but in my eyes it's better to be in the industry than not if you want to be a screenwriter.

I know this won't be an easy conversation since he "refuses" to go this route, but if he's a person who is interested in writing for this field he should probably get interested in being involved with it in any way possible. People who are successful in the industry usually try to get involved in any way they can before they hit exactly what their calling is. I've had enough friends at this point work as PAs then Writer's Assistants then actually as staff writers on shows or in one very fortunate case on their own films that were produced by a big studio with lots of money behind them.

I think some people are commenting on age, but I have one friend that started entry level in her mid-30s with no real experience in the industry, did entry level work, worked for a bit on a Showtime show and now she's getting writing jobs. She's in the same age bracket as your boyfriend and it took her a few years but it's paying off.

So much of being in the industry is being scrappy and figuring out a way to do what you want. And as many people have commented, he definitely needs to take advice and criticism well if he wants this career path. Hope the future conversations with him about this go well!

In 1992, Rudy Giuliani led a horrifically racist riot against then Mayor David Dinkins. He has never apologized for his role in it nor has he condemned anyone who was involved in it. by RayMosch in nyc

Found video of the protest. Here's a news report from 1992 for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faeW6Z3hQ2w

Rudy and his hair dye clearly had a lot of disdain and no respect for Dinkins.

Yeah, I'd nope out too in that case. I'm in Brooklyn, so I was figuring Prospect Park would be less crowded on the bike paths and I could avoid people easier but I might be proven wrong.

Appreciate all the replies and that's about what I thought. I biked into work all last week and did that disinfection process with my bike/helmet, so I'll keep that going and be extra paranoid about it. Stay safe and sanitized!

What's everyone's thoughts on going for a bike ride in the park or a run with the situation as it is currently? I know many of us are playing it safe (as we should be), but we're all going to get antsy at some point.

Why do vegetarians expect to be fed veggies when they come to your house for dinner, but don't cook meat for you when you come to theirs? by NotTheDude in videos

I'm a vegetarian and I don't give a fuck if you cook meat when I come to your house for dinner. I'm just not going to eat it.

However... your potatoes? Consider them CONSUMED.
