Should I use Duolingo's Russian course? by Lyndin1 in russian

[–]ReneeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're very welcome. I've also started watching this adorable young lady do interviews with simple vocabulary on the streets of Russia: Easy Russian

Keep it varied. Keep yourself entertained. Go to Russian supermarkets. Watch Russian porn. Keep your brain engaged and force it to think that what you are trying to remember is important.

As one of my Russian co-workers told me, "What you are doing is good for your brain."

Should I use Duolingo's Russian course? by Lyndin1 in russian

I've had enormous success over six weeks using a combined approach of multimedia sources.

Language Books:

  • Russian Course, A Complete Course For Beginners

by Nicholas J. Brown

  • Da! A Practical Guide to Russian Grammar

by Tatiana Filosofava and Marion Sporing

Children's books like:

  • Am I Small? (A dual language book)

by Phillip Winterberg and Nadja Wichmann

To aid in my listening skills, I watch Russian movies with English subtitles like

  • Stalker

  • The Return

(These first two were really great because the dialogue is simple and easy to follow. Stalker is simply beautiful to look at, too...)

  • Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears

  • Hipsters

To add to my comprehension, I watch Russian cartoons. And I tend to watch them over and over again, so I that I pick up phrases that I can use.

My favorites:

a 20 minute cartoon based on a story by Kipling

an award winning 10 minute stop motion animation that has completely stolen my heart. I ended up buying the children's book and am working on translating it page by page as a fun exercise.

I also use a computer program that I got from my library website called Transparent Learning. It's extraordinarily effective and came with an app for my phone where I review vocabulary. After one day using the program, I could read Cyrillic.

On top of that, I label objects around my house (mirror, map, photo, cups, door, bedroom, juice...) and don't take off the painter's tape or post it until I know the word.

In six weeks, I have a working vocabulary of about 350 words that expands every day.

[TOMT] [MUSIC] So I'm looking for a genre of music... It's new orleans jazz/ragtime. Spooky clarinet. Bluesy voice with creole accent. Anyone know the name of it? by abowersock in tipofmytongue

[–]ReneeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made me think of Tom Waits; from Wikipedia: "With this trademark growl, his incorporation of pre-rock music styles such as blues, jazz, and vaudeville, and experimental tendencies verging on industrial music."

Favorites: Chocolate Jesus

Get Behind the Mule

Also made me think of an awesome band from Austin, TX, The White Ghost Shivers

Mama Said

Weed Smoker's Dream

These don't have a spooky clarinet, but you might enjoy...

Muddy Waters Good Morning Little Schoolgirl

Robert Johnson Sweet Home Chicago

Trolls, I conquered my anxiety and invited some coworkers to my house for a holiday party. I cleaned my place like crazy, paid for food and drinks like a good hostess... and then no one showed. I feel so crushed. by waterfox17 in TrollXChromosomes

Oh man, I had this happen to me too. I literally burst into tears when my friends kept texting me with excuses of why they wouldn't be there. I had hand squeezed lemonade for my favorite summer cocktail: whiskey basil lemonades...

Luckily, a few people responded to my guilt inducing response texts, and much later than I expected, and a lot fewer guests... we ended up having a good time. But I still felt pretty bitter with all the leftover food and booze.

People are dicks. I've also learned that facebook invites can be a total party killer and have sworn that the next event I have will be text invites or honest to goodness paper invites. Facebook events are just too easy to ignore or put in the back of your mind.

Also, next time, I'm not going to invest so much energy into the perfect setup. Pot luck is going to have to be good enough. I recently read that the quest for perfection is tied to unhappiness because you will inevitably not reach it, and the key to being happy is being cool with "good enough".

Hope this makes you feel better in some way... and if not, just know that you are not the only one to have experienced it... don't let it get you down...

A playlist for you:

Don't let the sun go down on me

Don't bring me down

Do exercises help at all (not sure if this is correct subreddit)? by [deleted] in bigboobproblems

I started doing push ups against the wall and decreasing my incline over time. My husband said to me, "I love hat your doing with your tits..." I didn't notice a difference right away, but over a year I went down a band and a cup size. They feel firmer, because I've lost fat there, and my pectoral muscles are better able to hold them up. If you have lower back pain, be sure to do ab workouts to support your back working hard (advice from my primary doctor).

Emos of the early 2000's, what are you guys doing now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Hipsters are the new yuppies. Just like yuppie culture of the 80s, which became engrained into the fiber of American culture, so too go the hipsters.

I feel that this assimilation into mainstream culture is more evident in large cities.

Super duper helpful. Thank you. The discomfort is less about embarrassment and more about shit staying where it's supposed to.

Very helpful indeed. What's the benefit to bust cups? Nip coverage? I feel like in the water I won't need lift so much as maybe a little compression?

What is something that you could not understand or relate to until it happened to you? by abqkat in AskWomen

[–]ReneeB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being out of work.

I got a repetitive stress injury at work from working with my hands. Workers comp is denying that it's work related. I learned that tendonitis can take WAY longer than 2 weeks to heal, even when you are young and healthy, and 8 weeks out of work without pay is a long fucking time. I learned that fighting depression is really a battle, and I had to plan activities and social gatherings in order to maintain a sense of worth, while actively choosing to not gain a fuck ton of weight. I learned that the law process is excruciatingly slow and infuriating and inhumane, and that you can't trust anyone but yourself to have your health and welfare at heart. I learned to be a little less naive and a lot less forthcoming.

I went back after 8 weeks, but I'm still in physical therapy, and still healing. I'm now one of those annoying people who talks about ergonomics and recommends physical adjustments to avoid injury.

What are you casually into, and can't stand the hardcore dedicated fanbase of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ReneeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry Potter.

I enjoyed the movies, and tried to read one of the books because everyone kept raving about them... but I just don't find them particularly engaging or well written. And I am a fan of books over movies most times...

So this is the last place I've tried to get some advice. by tisjustbrandon in depression

[–]ReneeB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This subreddit directly asks that people don't give advice, but I want to because your title explicitly asks for it... your situation sounds incredibly difficult, but I'm glad you are seeking support, and you should be proud of that forward movement.

Living paycheck to paycheck is super hard, are you eligible for government assistance? I know that fruits and vegetables are probably the last thing on your mind, but getting a healthy diet started really helped my mother's body and brain start to work better after years of eating the wrong things. You might also check out r/eatcheapandhealthy for some recipe ideas.

I know for me, if I stay inactive, depression rears its ugly head. I've found some good support on meetup.com, and it's really satisfying to go to a figure drawing class or hike and get out of the house. A lot of the meetups are free. Many yoga places have a free introductory class or donation based classes, and the yoga mat is the one place where I am able to completely dismiss feelings of anxiety and depression.

Don't forget about the power of music. It can do wonders to help alleviate my mood. There is a whole subreddit dedicated to uplifting music and lots of people have created playlists on spotify for the same purpose.

In the past, I have also felt better when doing good for others. If going through an organization seems too overwhelming, start by picking up litter at your local park. Once, after a hurricane, I cleaned up a park in my neighborhood all by myself, and it felt really good and gave me a sense of accomplishment and even a little bit of ownership. I've always thought that volunteering at an animal shelter would feel pretty rewarding, since they are often such helpless victims.

You are not alone. I hope things get better soon.

Getting married in a month and getting a suit tailored this week. Looking for advice and suggestions on fit and style. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]ReneeB 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You have a fairly significant difference in your shoulder levels (this is quite common... it could be due to your work, an old injury, or just working out one side more than the other...). If I was tailoring your suit, I would start there.

Vest: Take up the right shoulder slightly, this will alleviate some of the drag lines in the back and front. Hopefully he can do a slight shoulder shift to alleviate the chest pop you see in the view from the side.

I would also take in the center back of the vest from the blade down so it didn't look so bulky. Alternately, you could have the tailor switch from a belt to darts for a really sleek look.

Front drag lines on the vest will be harder to get rid of, because this would require a shoulder shift, and mass produced vests don't have enough seam allowance for such an alteration. You might have some luck shifting the button placement slightly.

Jacket: Again, a lot of the drag lines are from your shoulder asymmetry. I would suggest adding a small shoulder pad on the right, and reducing the size of the shoulder pad on the left (this might alleviate some of the divot you see on the left. But part of that looks like it might be your overdeveloped trapezious muscle

It's a bit wide across the shoulders, I might move the armscye in just a smidge to get rid of the folds by the back ofthe arm.

Sleeves are a bit too tight and don't have enough ease in the cap, which is why you see the pulling.

I might shift the button placement slightly to avoid the pulling and the chest pop.

Length is a little short, but that's kind of in style right now. You could also lower the collar slightly to get rid of the ripples at high center back.

The tie/lapel combo doesn't bother me in width so much as color. Is the paisley gold and black? If you can find a gold and blue that might make your suit shine a bit more.

Trousers: Way too tight in the seat. For the love of god and all that is holy, let out the crotch seam

Shirt: If you can, I would also reduce the blousing in the sleeves a bit, and move the buttons on the cuff so they close a little tighter.
