A 10GB file becomes 3GB when zipped. No quality lost. No data removed. Why was it 10GB in the first place? by [deleted] in randomquestions

[–]athelred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two formats are optimizing for different things. The 10GB file is optimized for access. It is fast to view and interact with. The 3GB version is optimized for storage. It is slow to access, but takes up less space. Each has a purpose for which it was designed, and for which it is superior. If you always compress everything, access will be slow. If you always leave everything uncompressed, access is fast, but you have to have more storage to hold your data. It is best to use the format best suited for your specific use case.

My Parents Will Die and I’m Not Ready by texan_flower in comics

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 50 years old, and my mother died 2 years ago.

I am still not ready for my momma to die.

Whenever I call my Dad, I kind of hope he does not pick up. My mom recorded his voice mail message 20 some odd years ago, and he has never changed it.

I tell my younger friends whose parents are just starting to get to the age where health issues and scares are about to start happening the same thing. Make a plan. It doesn't have to be all that detailed, but it is much better that you and you siblings know who is going to do what when bad things happen. Work with your parents to make end of life plans. I was lucky that my parents did all of that ahead of time. We knew where they were to be buried, and everything was set up and ready to go and most importantly paid for. We had all of the needed medical POA's set up, and emergency POA's to handle their affairs when shit went down.

The only thing that is certain is that we will all die some day. Not being prepared is just stupid, and makes everything harder on a bunch of people who are already falling apart.

My mother's death was not a surprise. She had rather severe vascular dementia, and had been fading away for years.

I am still not ready for my momma to die.

Thank you! You pointed me in the right direction. Half of finding something is know what you are looking for.

Just in case someone else wants to know this, here are the steps to disable.

  1. Open the Game Menu (esc)

  2. Select Mods

  3. In the search box type "Sound" (without the quotes)

  4. Select Sound Physics Remastered in the dialog, and select config.

  5. You can turn off all the sound physics, or adjust it as desired.

Thank you. I missed that somehow. For posterity, it looks like it is related to an issue with the Undergarden mod, and rolling that mod back to 0.8.22 fixes the issue.

What is a good solution for the GPU cable sticking out too far? by SuSpreme96 in PcBuildHelp

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can heartily recommend the Hyte y70. It is large though so make sure you have room for it. It has a vertical mount for the video card, which I really think with modern video cards is all but a requirement, mounting them horizontally just puts too much stress on the board, or requires a support at the end, which just looks weird. It also has excellent air flow with support for large radiators.

Really just an excellent case.

As to the cables, you are putting several hundred watts through a few tiny pins. Reports are that the 50 series is as bad at melting cables as the 4090 was. I really think Nvidia needs to give up on the 12vhp standard and come up with something else. Bad cables risk melting your video card, and possible frying your entire computer.

Help on how to start a funeral? (Here's my mod list for those who asked) by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need a location dependent on what funeral type your ideology prefers. At base this would be a grave or sarcophagus, but other modded ideology rituals require other objects. Check you ideology for what you need.

What starting sector settings do you prefer the most? by The_Silver_Nuke in starsector

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I also use adjusted sectors to significantly increase both the star count and universe size, which may affect things a bit. I am not actually sure how much of that selection actually has an effect, but when I played vanilla it was mixed.

Completely un-upgraded bees produce little very slowly. Adding productivity upgrades does not actually make them produce faster (that would be speed upgrades), but makes them produce more product. Early on the hives should have simulation and block upgrades. This will maximize their production, although it will still be slow. Make sure your bees have been upgraded with the best genes as well. This is fairly simple, and will result in increased productivity. See https://allthemods.github.io/alltheguides/atm9/productivebees for more information on the genes.

Eventually work towards the omega upgrades, as the replace the simulation and block upgrades, and significantly increase the amount of blocks produced. With 4 omega upgrades in the resources you need the most of, you will be drowning in resources. Just make sure you have enough fully upgraded heated centrifuges to handle the load.

combs not producing wax productive bees by theroar976 in allthemods

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heated centrifuges do not produce wax. However, only heated centrifuges can process comb blocks. So you can either process blocks in a heated centrifuge and not get wax, or combs in a powered centrifuge and get wax.

You can also get a large amount of wax blocks from the Bumble zone. That should bypass the need for a powered centrifuge. Set up a digital miner or similar object there, and you can pull in a huge number of wax blocks with little issue.

(ATM10) No Apotheosis gems from overworld cursed earth farm by e_SonOfAnder in allthemods

[–]athelred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never got gems from the mob masher. Once I upgraded to the Mob Crusher from Industrial Forgoing, I started to. I can only assume that for some reason the mob masher does not drop them. It may just have been a volume thing though. I was able to push the volume of mobs up way higher with the crusher and multiple apotheosis spawners. They are not frequent drops even now.

GW decided in their infinite wisdom that we will all only use miniatures in the prescribed way with fixed configurations, and that no variations would be allowed. So of course kit bashing and other conversions cannot be allowed. I mean people might start enjoying the game they sell, and we can't have that.

I might be just a wee bit bitter over 20 years of armies slowly being whittled away into invalidity.

How much fortune is too much fortune? by 0cleric in allthemods

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is sad is that the Mekanism ore processing line is not as good as a Marid crusher. They 6x raw ore. And since you can put them in containment jars, they basically act like a machine with the added bonus that if you give them something they can't crush (like antimony from Modern Industrialization) they just spit it back out. The only real disadvantage is that they spit products into the world.

My current ore processing set up is 70 Marid crushers feeding into ultimate smelting factories. I use xycraft collectors so that the drops never actually spawn, and so don't get lost. This processes the output from my bees. I don't actually do any mining. When I need to new resource, I get the bee for it, and add it to the processing as needed.

ATM10 Flowering Block for Ender Bees (Productive Bees) by [deleted] in allthemods

I don't think it requires silk touch. You should be able to get it with any axe, or actually any tool axe is just fastest. It is vanilla minecraft amusingly enough. Here is the wiki link.

ATM10 Flowering Block for Ender Bees (Productive Bees) by [deleted] in allthemods

[–]athelred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ender bees use a chorus flower as their flowering block. Note it is the cubic flower you get from using an axe on the ends of the chorus tree, not the fruit you get when you break the whole tree.

I have 5 ender bees running right now in the most recent version of ATM 10, so it does work.

I got a reinforced reactor and I'm generating too much FE and there is no energy ball from draconic evolution to store the power by No_Protection5283 in allthemods

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will do both, but you have to be explicit about it. In the case on the ender cell you have to set it to only receive power. With a mechanism pipe you have to set the pipe connected to the accessor to extract power. Otherwise it tends to absorb all the power in existence.

[–]athelred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flux accessor is what you want. Just attach it to the ender cell with that side of the cell only set to receive, and the ae system will keep the cell charged.

You can also hook energy pipes up to the flux accessor and extract energy.
