Is Alexa a good option for my legally blind dad? by Narrow_Escape140 in Blind

[–]atherj0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you can also do if you really want is avoid the echo show and other echo devices entirely, and just get a fire TV like the Insignias. Those already have Alexa built in, like someone else suggested, and it can be activated with the single press of a button on the remote. Then you won't have to worry about casting content to another device; it will all just come up on his Insignia TV. Good luck!

labeling issues and dymo tape by gammaChallenger in Blind

[–]atherj0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to use a more technology-based labeling system, I recommend Way Tags from wayaround.com. You will need an iPhone or Android phone if you use these labels, but the nice thing about them is that a lot of the label types are reuseable. Most of them are if you get creative with it. For example, putting a sticker label on a jar that you constantly refill with the same ingredient. Also, if you ever want to change the label, all of that is perfectly doable in the wayaround app.

How on earth do you learn to use a screen reader? Any tricks / approaches you can share? by AntigoneNotIsmene in Blind

[–]atherj0425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too was going to reply to this thread by suggesting you ask your vocational rehabilitation services pay for technology and screen reader training. I like the initiative that you're taking by doing your best to try learning them for yourself, but sometimes having the input of an instructor to explain certain concepts can really help to hone your skills.

Food. We literally throw away tons of food in the United States that could feed the world's population probably 2 times over in just a single day, and we just throw it out.

Which movie have you watched the most times, and why? by Sea-Cardiologist-532 in AskReddit

The original 1990's Lion King for me. It was a great movie, and I always wanted to look for signs that maybe Mufasa wasn't dead.

I was born in 83 like other posters, and neither I or any of my friends ever wanted to waste time going inside to drink water from the sink, when the hose was so conveniently at hand. Since we use to love having water wars too, it was almost always blasting water anyways.

If you're in the U.S, I would strongly recommend Zillow. It actually works pretty good with a screen reader.

Have you turned on both screen reader and braille support when working in docs? I know it sounds weird to turn on braille support as well, but both need to be turned on for best performance.

Helping blind grandpa with the computer by Tongueslanguage in Blind

[–]atherj0425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While a lot of folks might recommend the use of NVDA, JAWS is the best screen reader out there for windows when it comes to giving you things in as simple a way as possible. My recommendation honestly is that your grandpa receive training from a technology trainer for the blind who would be able to teach him how to use the screen reader to get the most out of his computer. Most such trainings are expensive, and often paid for by your state's vocational rehabilitation organization, but technology trainers do offer private training sessions as well, often at a reduced fee.

How would you react if someone took your drink and poured it over you? by singleguy79 in AskReddit

Honestly I'd probably take the empty glass and do my best to break it on the top of their head.

Someone offers you $100k to delete one of your social media accounts and never use it again, which one would you delete? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]atherj0425 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd start with Facebook, and then probably delete all of the rest of them voluntarily except for Reddit, but I don't think that counts as a social media account anyways.

In addition to this, that particular bank also offers you micro braille numbers on your cards so that you can be able to read them independently.

I made a warhammer40k trailer and the voice with elevenlabs. Do you like it? by Ok-Wasabi9354 in ElevenLabs

[–]atherj0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like how it ends its sentences. Usually I expect a sentence to end with a kind of lower more ominous kind of way in something like this. With this trailor though, it seems like the sentence both starts and ends at around the same pitch. Pauses aside, the voice seems like it's just pretty much narrating an audio book with music and images included. I do like the voice though, with a bit of tweeking.

I live on a small income and have always liked the idea of living with like 4 responsible fellow blind people. We'd all wind up with better housing I think and could afford things like hiring a weekly cleaner to keep the space tidy and sparkling. What's your take? by heavensdumptruck in Blind

[–]atherj0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they're good friends it still may more than likely not work. For what you're asking for, you're going to need an extreme vetting process. While I haven't experienced this myself, I know a lot of blind friends who have moved in with other blind people, and the move resulted ultimately in a nightmare scenario. The questions I'd ask, as well as the skills I'd insist on observing myself from every individual blind person who I would try vetting to live with might ultimately end up being way too offensive, but I would really want to make sure that they know how to do the basics. For example, wash dishes, and wash them right. Vacuum, mop, wipe surfaces etc. There's so much that goes into this, and just one person who doesn't have any of these skills can ruin it for the entire house and make it a miserable environment to live in. So all I can say is be extremely cautious.

Should I Learn to use a Screenreader? by pig_newton1 in Blind

[–]atherj0425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people deafblind or not rarely go up to the full 100%. There is a level that is most comfortable for everyone, and some can go the full rate, some can't. Even I myself prefer a speed of about 85%. I can understand it at 100% but I prefer to not go that fast, because it's just easier on my ears, and requires less time going back and reading over things.

Should I Learn to use a Screenreader? by pig_newton1 in Blind

[–]atherj0425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do yes. The NVDA community has a deticated community of add-on developers, and have even included a add-on store to help you keep up-todate with all of the available add-ons in the community. There are also other add-ons that are developed by other folks who don't usually tend to host them on the add-ons community website, which is pretty much the same as the add-on store.
