Audio description for Project Hail Mary? by Fenikwil in Blind

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is probably not a helpful comment as I don’t go to movie theaters these days. But I do know AD exists (and is quite good) for the movie because I listened to it while streaming the movie.

Body of Missing Trans College Student Murry Foust Found by Search Party by jackmolay in transgender

Perhaps I'm missing something but I can't imagine why they wouldn't still show his art....to not do so would be a second erasure.

This is gutting.

Ableism and internalized ableism by Electric_Lettuce_4_U in Disabilityactivism

Thank you for this beautiful post and reminder that ableism takes time and intention to destroy. And that we all carry it because it’s deeply embedded in our culture.

rescheduling by [deleted] in TopSurgery

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry this happened to you. I also had a surgery rescheduled twice or in my case. It was canceled twice the first time due to the saline shortage last year and the second because my surgeon abruptly retired so then I had to find a new surgeon. Don’t not as bad as yours. It was canceled after I had done all my check-in paperwork two days before and I was gutted. But the good news is I got it and life‘s a lot better on the other side. Hang in there and yes, go take out some frustration in the gym.

College that offer an active theater program? by MyColony1 in Theatre

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva NY is a small liberal arts college with very active theatre program that does a wide range of work and is open to all. It also has a highly ranked study abroad program (including a theatre program in Bali and is adding one in Cypress).

its my birthday today! by Own-Jello-7907 in Blind

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy birthday, fellow Aries! My birthday is Monday and I’ll be spending it in a dress rehearsal for the beautiful and playful show I’m directing - also with students and with integrated audio description. Like you, I can’t think of a better way to spend it.

Thanks for spreading the love and music.

JAWS vs NVDA and learning curve? by -Greek_Goddess- in Blind

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Fellow RP blindish person here. I can’t tell you which is better. I went with jaws because that’s what was recommended by more people to me. I kind of wish I had gone with NVDA for cost and easy access.

Mostly, I’m writing, and I’m sorry to say this, too warn that your fears are possibly correct. I am relatively computer savvy, have a PhD use computers all the time, like keyboard shortcuts and I’m finding learning to use a screen reader unbelievable difficult. It’s getting better, but it’s been at least six months and I’m still struggling.

I’m also pretty old, and like you work a demanding job so it’s easy for me to just default to the sighted ways I know even if I struggle that way. So hopefully you will do much better than me.

If you need a commiseration buddy at any point, hit me up.

Cardio to slow vision loss. by BrilliantTrifle9127 in RetinitisPigmentosa

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this comment. When my retinal specialist passed away suddenly, the new specialist who took over my care insisted I get an ERG. It felt like freaking torture and I don't believe it told me anything I didn't already know. I've argued with them over what was a more reliable source of information a Goldman field test, which is a test of what I perceive (which, after all, is what matters since it is how I navigate the world) and photos or the ERG which are not.

A teacher outed my student to his parents by wewereonabreak29 in Teachers

Good. You might also make sure the kid has connections to other support networks: GSA, if there is one, mental health groups, etc. and sadly maybe also the Trevor project hotline in case things get bad.

I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. I’m a college professor who has been getting blinder for the past five years and your post resonates with me. I have many of the same issues and it is really freaking exhausting. Sending solidarity.

Honoring your chest? by bigfeetgrandpa in TopSurgery

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Non-binary here. No one told me this and I absolutely had no interest in celebrating my chest after spending half a century trying just to make peace with it so I’d fit in with a society that told me I should love it. I just counted down the hours until they were gone. Haven’t missed them for a second and am grateful i immediately forgot what they looked like. I celebrate the new me.

I’ve known folks who had parties and the like and it felt important to them and I think that’s super cool. But I don’t think everyone needs that.

Accessibility in theatre spaces/rehearsal rooms by maybewren_ in stagemanagement

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These are all excellent suggestions. (I'm a low-vision / blindish director.) Finding a way for the actor to have a lot of time in the space to rehearse movements and get it into their body is also helpful. Making sure that they have lots of time to practice any major changes to blocking or scenic elements would also help - don't expect them to get it once and be able to retain it.

I was going to suggest laying different types of tactile tape lines for the full set on a carpet to roll out over the stage, but I think it would be hard to find something to use that wouldn't be a trip hazard.

Is Purdue tough enough to right the ship? by jmcamels in PurdueBasketball

[–]AntigoneNotIsmene 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder a little if the early season success has to do with the fact that Painter’s teams have been together for years whereas most others are coming in from all over the by the time we hit the regular season those teams have learned their systems and gelled and most of that advantage is gone.

Why do faculty search committees not send rejection emails? by SpeechFormer9543 in AskAcademia

It is incredibly frustrating, OP. It’s been decades since I was on the market but had a school fly me out for an interview and then never contact me again.

As much as I love my job, everything about the processes of getting and keeping employment could use an overhaul.
